(4) COLOMBIA: COMMENTARY

With a population roughly equivalent to that of Spain and a fairly robust local production industry, Colombia was until recently very much a secondary market for the international film industry. But the past five years have seen startling growth in the exhibition sector. Screens have increased by 50%, admissions are up by 36% and box office by 49%. Per capita annual attendance, which stood at 0.7 in 2010, grew to almost once a year by 2014 – a 42% increase.

But it is the Hollywood majors (and, to a lesser extent, the local production industry) who have benefited most from the growth, both theatrically and on the country’s fast growing VOD market: three out of every four films opening in Colombia over the period surveyed come from North America, and such evidence as can be gleaned from the VOD operators suggests that the choice is likewise heavily slanted in favour of Hollywood and US independent producers. Much of the fare coming from the latter source consists of aggregated content made up of what used to be called ‘straight-to-video’.

Thus while more diverse tastes may gradually come to be catered for as the VOD market matures, the current early stages suggest that Colombia belongs to that list of emerging territories whose audiences, watching most of their movies at home, come to regard the mainstream-oriented VOD catalogues as the norm, with foreign and arthouse titles having little opportunity to build a following.

Certainly, growth in the online market has not just equalled but outstripped that in the theatrical sector. Data as to who is watching what remains hard to come by (although the sample analysis of the DVD market above suggests that a much broader range of titles – albeit not German ones – is available there than on VOD). But the VOD market looks like being where the money is (or will be).

The third largest country in Latin America by population (after Brazil and Mexico), Colombia comes second by percentage of internet users at 85.9% (Brazil has 86.5%) and has an estimated 12.8 million online video users, around half a million of whom, according to research by Dataxis and others, subscribe to an SVOD provider. Competition is currently rife between the two main platforms, Netflix and local operator Clarovideo (whose parent company, mobile phone company Claro, operates throughout Latin America). Netflix, which had 45,000 subscribers in Colombia by the end of its launch year (2011), was up to 535,000 by the end of last year (2014). Clarovideo has approximately half that. Prices are low – around US$5.5 (EUR 4.50) a month, only slightly more than the average price of a cinema ticket. The only thing hampering expansion is Colombia’s low connection speeds – 2.65 Mbps, compared with 3.48 Mbps in Brazil. Here, however, if the money is there, the technology will probably follow. And, for that matter, vice versa.

(5) GERMAN FILMS IN COLOMBIA

Despite sustained growth over the past five years in both the theatrical and home entertainment sectors, Colombia remains of limited interest to European arthouse films in general and German films in particular. Hollywood films dominate the box office and the release schedules, with occasional local hits making a mark. But only one in every 10 films released is European, with an annual box-office average of 2-3%.

German films find it hard to secure a niche even in this limited market, with only those films that can ‘pass for’ American – English-language action/adventure and children’s films – regularly selling more than 20,000 tickets: the average admissions figure for a German festival or arthouse film in Colombia between 2010 and 2014 was 13,575. DAS WEISSE BAND, an arthouse hit on most markets (though less so in Latin America), sold just under 8,500 tickets in the territory. Most German films that were released (eight out of 17) went out through leading local distributor Cine Colombia, which handles the full spectrum of films, with 15-year-old independent Babilla Ciné, which claims to specialise in auteur cinema, releasing just two German titles.

On the home entertainment front, the battle for new VOD sign-ups is being driven by mainstream titles, with very occasional German films – again, mainly those that can ‘pass for’ American – on offer. Please note, however, that charts in (3) above are based on a sample of the titles on offer – a large sample, to be sure, but (although this is unlikely) a different sample might yield different results.
