One-hundred-ninety-five years ago, we started out, saying, "We hold these truths ... ." The Republic of ancient Rome fell to the Caesars before Christ was born. The democratic city-states of ancient Greece became tyrannies. And while the English system has evolved over the centuries, it has never had a constitution. This country's strength lies in its dedication to an ideal. We are old truth-holders. The United States could turn itself into an Old World country. But then it wouldn't be this country. We do not believe that anyone - especially a young person newly-initiated into his society's political structure - should allow himself the uncompromising security of a crusty shell of cynicism. It leads to a loss of concern, or, if you will, to apathy. And that, more than any "machine" or narrow and overloaded tax base, is the most powerful single factor that could waste Mayor Paul Jordon's attempts to improve Jersey City. We must try for something better. After all, the fad that this country has always insisted on more is really what distinugishes it. In response, they reserved two press tickets for me so that I could attend the Gaelic Park performance, which was moved to August 6, a Friday. Then they set up an interview date: Monday, August 9, in New York's C.B.S. Building. The concert pictures on these pages are from the Gaelic Park show.
