It is not in vain that our Yeshiva is called "Derech Chaim" – the "Path of Life". We make every effort to make it clear to our students that the Torah that they study here is not theoretical – it is geared is to lead and direct them to take those same high ideals and put them into practice in their daily lives - in their hobbies, careers and life-choices. The Rashbi Study Partners Program Twice a week, Kiryat Gat Hesder students go to study Talmud and Parshat Shavua with young students at the nearby "Rashbi" Mamlachti Dati elementary school. Due to its proximity our students can now engage in this activity twice a week and the young children are in turn encouraged to visit the Yeshiva as well. In general, these children come from very economically and religiously challenged backgrounds. Having a "big brother" from the local Hesder Yeshiva is invaluable in building their respect for Torah and connecting them to proper role models. Community Rabbinate Program Amit L’Mishpacha A number of our Rabbis also serve as the beloved The Family Associate Program spiritual leaders of different local congregations. In this context, they are busy giving talks and lectures as well as helping families in their community in various ways. -

Sderot – the Central Hesder Yeshiva and the “Shluchot” Revolution!
Sderot – The Central Hesder Yeshiva and the “Shluchot” Revolution! The Torah Revolution in Sderot The Central Max and Ruth Schwartz Hesder Yeshiva of Sderot was founded over 15 years ago and now has more than 400 students. The rapid growth of the Yeshiva despite the thousands of missiles aimed at Sderot, together with the construction of a magnificent campus has served to strengthen the spirit of all the residents and uplift the status of Torah throughout the region. Over the years Sderot has become just about the largest Hesder Yeshiva in Israel and is blessed with a very high religious and scholastic level. 400 strong in the main study hall Unique Outreach Affiliate Institutions The Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi David Fendel, a literal powerhouse behind so many local projects - both spiritual and material – came on Aliyah from the United States to build both his home and a world of Torah in Sderot. In addition to building our main Hesder institution, Rabbi Fendel led a true revolution in the yeshiva world when he insisted on establishing and receiving official recognition for 2 affiliate institutions (“Shluchot” in Hebrew) serving a more varied clientele than other Hesder Yeshivot. Rav Fendel believed that with the right approach, with a warm and unique staff it would be possible to reach out and attract graduates of regular religious high schools and turn them into proud Torah-true Jews and soldiers imbued with deep faith and self- sacrifice. To achieve this goal Sderot has established two affiliates– Yeshivat Lev La’Daat also in Sderot led by Rabbi Shlomo Binyamin now numbering about 130 students and Yeshivat Derech Chaim in Kiryat Gat headed by Rabbi Amir Maman with over 70 students. -

Jews and Christians: Perspectives on Mission The Lambeth-Jewish Forum Reuven Silverman, Patrick Morrow and Daniel Langton Jews and Christians: Perspectives on Mission The Lambeth-Jewish Forum Both Christianity and Judaism have a vocation to mission. In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, God’s people are spoken of as a light to the nations. Yet mission is one of the most sensitive and divisive areas in Jewish-Christian relations. For Christians, mission lies at the heart of their faith because they understand themselves as participating in the mission of God to the world. As the recent Anglican Communion document, Generous Love, puts it: “The boundless life and perfect love which abide forever in the heart of the Trinity are sent out into the world in a mission of renewal and restoration in which we are called to share. As members of the Church of the Triune God, we are to abide among our neighbours of different faiths as signs of God’s presence with them, and we are sent to engage with our neighbours as agents of God’s mission to them.”1 As part of the lifeblood of Christian discipleship, mission has been understood and worked out in a wide range of ways, including teaching, healing, evangelism, political involvement and social renewal. Within this broad and rich understanding of mission, one key aspect is the relation between mission and evangelism. In particular, given the focus of the Lambeth-Jewish Forum, how does the Christian understanding of mission affects relations between Christianity and Judaism? Christian mission and Judaism has been controversial both between Christians and Jews, and among Christians themselves. -

Simkins Terror at the Holy of Holies Christians and Jewish Builders of the Temple at the Turn of the Twenty- First Century Yaakov Ariel, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Introduction [1] In August of 1969, a young Australian, Dennis Michael Rohan, set fire to the Al-Aqsa mosque on the Temple Mount. Rohan was motivated by a desire to bring about the messianic age and thought that clearing the ground for the building of the Temple would set the apocalyptic clock going (see the explanations in his criminal file in the Jerusalem District Court, 69/173). Psychiatrists later diagnosed Rohan as insane, and many at the time chose to believe that the burning of the mosque was the act of an unstable fanatic. Since the 1970s, however, while only few have tried to damage the Temple Mount mosques, a number of Christian and Jewish groups have strived for the rebuilding of the Temple and some have even begun preparations for the reenactment of the Temple’s ancient rituals. Their cooperation has brought about a new chapter in Jewish-Christian relations, inspiring unprecedented alliances and new visions on the part of Jews and Christians for the Messianic times. Rohan’s setting of fire was the first act that highlighted the explosive potential of the Christian and Jewish messianic hopes. Of special concern for Israeli officials, as well as peace-hopefuls, in Israel and other countries, has been the possibility that people holding such beliefs might destroy the Muslim mosques on the Temple Mount and bring about a 63 The Contexts of Religion and Violence regional doomsday. -
Radicalization of the Settlers' Youth: Hebron As a Hub for Jewish Extremism
© 2014, Global Media Journal -- Canadian Edition Volume 7, Issue 1, pp. 69-85 ISSN: 1918-5901 (English) -- ISSN: 1918-591X (Français) Radicalization of the Settlers’ Youth: Hebron as a Hub for Jewish Extremism Geneviève Boucher Boudreau University of Ottawa, Canada Abstract: The city of Hebron has been a hub for radicalization and terrorism throughout the modern history of Israel. This paper examines the past trends of radicalization and terrorism in Hebron and explains why it is still a present and rising ideology within the Jewish communities and organization such as the Hilltop Youth movement. The research first presents the transmission of social memory through memorials and symbolism of the Hebron hills area and then presents the impact of Meir Kahana’s movement. As observed, Hebron slowly grew and spread its population and philosophy to the then new settlement of Kiryat Arba. An exceptionally strong ideology of an extreme form of Judaism grew out of those two small towns. As analyzed—based on an exhaustive ethnographic fieldwork and bibliographic research—this form of fundamentalism and national-religious point of view gave birth to a new uprising of violence and radicalism amongst the settler youth organizations such as the Hilltop Youth movement. However, it is also important to consider the deeply embedded religious traditions of the area. When doing so, one will come across Christian Zionism, an impediment to peace. Some of the most prominent voices find validation for their narratives and actions through Christian Zionism. Zionism, in all forms, is an ideology that anchors Jews to Eretz Yisrael, the land of Biblical Israel. Some forms of Zionism include a system of balancing accumulations of land, resources, and wealth with the displacement of Palestinians. This belief that the Jews have a divineVOL. right to the X accumulation of land and resources legitimizes Zionism in their conquering of the past-legitimate Palestine. Thus, as Palestinian scholar Edward Said states, Zionism is an imported ideology in which Palestinians “pay and suffer” (Said, 1978). Christian Zionism consists of a variety of beliefs that promote and protect the Israeli state and government, while also dehumanizing the Palestinians and equating anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism. As a result, Christian Zionism is a challenging obstacle, one that is necessary to overcome to establish peace. Therefore, due to Christians being called to live peacefully (Colossians 3:15), the Christian tradition must seek and adhere to an alternative theology to Christian Zionism. Palestinian Christian Liberation Theology is a relevant way to interpret Scriptures based on the Christian tradition of peace found in the Old and New Testaments. -

The inaugural meeting was held in the Binyanei Ha'umah in the presence of the President of the State and Mrs. Shazar, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Knesset, Cabinet Ministers, the Chief Justice, Judges of the Supreme Court, the State Comptroller, visitors from abroad, public dignitaries and a large and representative gathering which filled the entire hall. The meeting was opened by Mr. Jacob Tsur, Chair- man of the Zionist General Council, who paid homage to Israel's Nobel Prize Laureate, the writer S.Y, Agnon, and read the message Mr. Agnon had sent to the gathering. Mr. Tsur also congratulated the poetess and writer, Nellie Zaks. The speaker then went on to discuss the gravity of the time for both the State of Israel and the Zionist Move- ment, and called upon citizens in this country and Zionists throughout the world to stand shoulder to shoulder to over- come the crisis. Professor Andre Chouraqui, Deputy Mayor of the City of Jerusalem, welcomed the delegates on behalf of the City. -

Without underestimating the significance of security and conflict within the structure of the Israeli state, in this thesis the Arab–Jewish relationship is viewed as just one important cleavage within the Israeli state. Instead of focusing on this single cleavage, this thesis explores the complex structure of cleavages at the heart of the Israeli political system. It introduces the concept of a ‘cleavage pyramid’, whereby divisions are of different saliency to different groups. At the top of the pyramid is division between Arabs and Jews, but one rung down from this are the intra-Jewish divisions, be they religious, ethnic or political in nature. In the case of Shas, the religious and ethnic elements are the most salient. The secular–religious divide is a key fault line in Israel and one in which ultra-orthodox parties like Shas are at the forefront. They and their politically secular counterparts form a key division in Israel, and an exploration of Shas is an insightful means of exploring this division further, its history and causes, and how these groups interact politically.
