The Spanish Navigations in the SPANISH LAKE (Pacific Ocean) and their Precedents From the Discovery of the New World (Indies, later America) Spanish explorers threw themselves with “gusto” into further discoverings and expeditions. They carried in their crew not only the “conquerors” and explorers, but also priests, public administrators who would judge the area’s value for colonization, linguists, scientists, and artists. These complete set of crew members charted the coasts, the currents, the winds, the fauna and flora, to report back to the crown for future actions and references. A very important part of the Spanish explorations, is the extent and role of local peoples in Spain’s discoveries. It was the objective of the crown that friendly connections and integration be made. In fact there were “civil wars” among the crown and some “colonizers” to enforce the Laws of Indies which so specified. Today, some of this information has been lost, but most is kept in public and private Spanish Museums, Libraries, Archives and private collections not only in Spain but in the America’s, Phillipines, the Vatican, Germany, Holland, and other european countries, and of course the United States, which over its 200 year existence as a nation, also managed to collect important information of the early explorations. ROYAL OAK HERITAGE TOUR – Main Street General Information: Royal Oak Pioneers 1858 – Richard & Jane Cheeseman family were the first to settle in the Royal Oak area. James Murray Yale Henry & Eliza Peers owned land in the area 1852, but didn’t move to the area until 1858. 1859 - Alexander Grant Dallas 1873 – Louis Duval 1891 – Robert Patterson Rithet 1900 – Frederick and William & Esther Quick Transportation & Access In 1863 a daily coach service from Victoria was implemented, leaving from the city in the morning by way of the west road to North Saanich and returning in the evening by the east road. Access from Victoria was up Quadra to West Saanich Road and East Saanich Road (Veiwmont now) Victoria & Sidney Railway Inaugural run was in 1894. There was a station called Glanford and a station here at Royal Oak. At the stretch along the Royal Oak Shopping Centre the V&S rail ran along the west side of West Saanich road. Royal Oak Station was at the corner of West Saanich Road and East Saanich Road (now Viewmont Avenue). The V&S would drop off mail and supplies. The engines ran on burning cordwood. Locals called it the Cordwood Ltd. as it also transported cordwood to Victoria from the settlers on the peninsula. A large number of pioneers supplemented their farming with the sale of cordwood. The rail line entered Royal Oak from the south approximately at a location where the intersection of Glanford Ave and W. Saanich Road is today. The rail line then climbed the long slope to a ridge that lead to Beaver and Elk Lakes. -

The Politics of Goal: A Study of the Wellington Miners5 Strike of 1890-911 JEREMY MOUAT The coal miners of Vancouver Island occupy a special place in the history of British Columbia. The communities in which they and their families lived — Ladysmith, Wellington, Nanaimo, and Cumberland — experi enced class tensions to a degree and duration rarely seen in other parts of the province. An Island miner involved in the 1912 strike, for example, might have had a grandparent who went through the 1877 strike or a parent who witnessed the 1890 strike. These outbursts of militancy reflect the uneasiness in the social relations of production on the coal fields. Class tensions found expression in other ways as well, such as the ethnic preju dice of the miners or their left-leaning political representatives. Each strike was fought out in a different context, informed both by past struggles and current conditions. What follows is an attempt to explore the context of one such episode, the Wellington strike of 1890-91. It began quietly enough on a Monday morning, 19 May 1890, when miners employed at the Dunsmuirs' Wellington colliery on Vancouver Island arrived late for work. The action expressed their demand for an eight-hour working day and recognition of their union. The Dunsmuirs refused to grant either of these, and an eighteen-month struggle followed. When the strike was finally called off in November 1891, the Wellington miners had failed to achieve their two goals. My life in Nanaimo (Lewis) Transcribed by Jennifer Bolstler & Dalys Barney, Vancouver Island University – September 24, 2015. [tape quality is very poor] William Lewis: This is William Lewis speaking for the Nanaimo branch of the British Columbia Historical Association, February the 25th, 1962. I will be 99 years of age on July the 17th. My home is 60 Dawes Street. My father, William Lewis, left his native Wales in 1852, crossing the Isthmus of Panama to California. He returned to Wales in 1861 and married Theodosia Williams. Returned to California where I was born in [a mining camp] July the 17th, 1863. We were a family of four children. 0:57 The family left Port, San Francisco for Seattle, at the time a 2,000 population, in 1872. Leaving there for Victoria in October '75 aboard the steamer Maude. When we arrived at Nanaimo shortly after. We were held up overnight on account of the current at Dodd Narrows … [unintelligible] … Captain Holmes was skipper. My parents and my brother Richard are buried in the old cemetery on Wallace Street, now a beautiful park-like resting place. I attended school on Crace Street. Mr. J. P. Planta was teacher. The building is still standing with a [business?] section added on in front. Where the hospital is now was a dense forest, as was most of the area, now the residential section. 2:09 Down by the Civic Arena was a camping place for Indians, northern, from the north, passing through these waters. Bass Most Recent Addendum: May 2010 FOREWORD The Basques have been a successful minority for centuries, keeping their unique culture, physiology and language alive and distinct longer than any other Western European population. In addition, outside of the Basque homeland, their efforts in the development of the New World were instrumental in helping make the U.S., Mexico, Central and South America what they are today. Most history books, however, have generally referred to these early Basque adventurers either as Spanish or French. Rarely was the term “Basque” used to identify these pioneers. Recently, interested scholars have been much more definitive in their descriptions of the origins of these Argonauts. They have identified Basque fishermen, sailors, explorers, soldiers of fortune, settlers, clergymen, frontiersmen and politicians who were involved in the discovery and development of the Americas from before Columbus’ first voyage through colonization and beyond. This also includes generations of men and women of Basque descent born in these new lands. As examples, we now know that the first map to ever show the Americas was drawn by a Basque and that the first Thanksgiving meal shared in what was to become the United States was actually done so by Basques 25 years before the Pilgrims. We also now recognize that many familiar cities and features in the New World were named by early Basques. These facts and others are shared on the following pages in a chronological review of some, but by no means all, of the involvement and accomplishments of Basques in the exploration, development and settlement of the Americas. -

COAST SALISH SENSES OF PLACE: Dwelling, Meaning, Power, Property and Territory in the Coast Salish World by BRIAN DAVID THOM Department of Anthropology, McGill University, Montréal March, 2005 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy © Brian Thom, 2005 Abstract This study addresses the question of the nature of indigenous people's connection to the land, and the implications of this for articulating these connections in legal arenas where questions of Aboriginal title and land claims are at issue. The idea of 'place' is developed, based in a phenomenology of dwelling which takes profound attachments to home places as shaping and being shaped by ontological orientation and social organization. In this theory of the 'senses of place', the author emphasizes the relationships between meaning and power experienced and embodied in place, and the social systems of property and territory that forms indigenous land tenure systems. To explore this theoretical notion of senses of place, the study develops a detailed ethnography of a Coast Salish Aboriginal community on southeast Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Through this ethnography of dwelling, the ways in which places become richly imbued with meanings and how they shape social organization and generate social action are examined. Narratives with Coast Salish community members, set in a broad context of discussing land claims, provide context for understanding senses of place imbued with ancestors, myth, spirit, power, language, history, property, territory and boundaries. The author concludes in arguing that by attending to a theorized understanding of highly local senses of place, nuanced conceptions of indigenous relationships to land which appreciate indigenous relations to land in their own terms can be articulated. -
