    ARNOLDIA VE 1 A continuation of the BULLETIN OF POPULAR INFORMATION of the Arnold Arboretum, Harvard University VOLUME 26 JUNE 17, 1966 NUMBERS 6-7 ORNAMENTAL MADWORTS (ALYSSUM) AND THE CORRECT NAME OF THE GOLDENTUFT ALYSSUM of the standard horticultural reference works list the "Madworts" as MANYa group of annuals, biennials, perennials or subshrubs in the family Cru- ciferae, which with the exception of a few species, including the goldentuft mad- wort, are not widely cultivated. The purposes of this article are twofold. First, to inform interested gardeners, horticulturists and plantsmen that this exception, with a number of cultivars, does not belong to the genus Alyssum, but because of certain critical and technical characters, should be placed in the genus Aurinia of the same family. The second goal is to emphasize that many species of the "true" .~lyssum are notable ornamentals and merit greater popularity and cul- tivation. The genus Alyssum (now containing approximately one hundred and ninety species) was described by Linnaeus in 1753 and based on A. montanum, a wide- spread European species which is cultivated to a limited extent only. However, as medicinal and ornamental garden plants the genus was known in cultivation as early as 1650. The name Alyssum is of Greek derivation : a meaning not, and lyssa alluding to madness, rage or hydrophobia. Accordingly, the names Mad- wort and Alyssum both refer to the plant’s reputation as an officinal herb. An infu- sion concocted from the leaves and flowers was reputed to have been administered as a specific antidote against madness or the bite of a rabid dog.

    Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. This challenge is most serious in tribe Caryophylleae since the supposed genera seem to be highly artificial, and the available morphological evidence cannot effectively be used for delimitation and exact determination of taxa. The main goal of the present study was to re-assess the monophyly of the genera currently recognized in this tribe using molecular phylogenetic data. We used the sequences of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the chloroplast gene rps16 for 135 and 94 accessions, respectively, representing all 16 genera currently recognized in the tribe Caryophylleae, with a rich sampling of Gypsophila as one of the most heterogeneous groups in the tribe.

    Natural Environment Team East Dorset Environment Partnership Dorset Biodiversity Appraisal Protocol Advice Note Planting scheme recommendations Introduction This advice note was written with the East Dorset Environment Partnership and is intended primarily to assist ecological consultants and developers when submitting Biodiversity Plans (BPs) and Landscape & Ecological Management Plans (LEMPs) to DC NET for review under the Dorset Biodiversity Appraisal Protocol (DBAP) by describing how to maximise the biodiversity potential of good planting schemes designed to deliver multiple benefits and contribute to achieving biodiversity net gain. Making the most of existing habitats strengthened through strong eco-tones; sound planting composition; connectivity to ecological networks within and beyond site boundaries and appropriate on-going management are all fundamental elements of an outstanding planting scheme. Submitted planting schemes for developments should seek to offer biodiversity benefit and comply with Dorset Council’s Pollinators Action Plan and Green Infrastructure Strategies. Schemes should demonstrate how they will contribute to addressing the Climate & Ecological Emergency Strategy (Draft 2020). Currently, many schemes appear to be generic designs that do not take account of local conditions and are based on widely available and low-cost shrubs; many of which are invasive, potentially invasive or nuisance plants known as ‘garden thugs’. This is of particular concern where new sites for development are on the rural fringe and pose a significant risk of spreading damaging alien plant species into the wider countryside and sensitive semi-natural habitats. Recent published work by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and others has focussed on lists of plants that attract pollinators rather than broader biodiversity considerations.

The flowers are excellent for cutting. Its attractive narrow leaves remain dark green in color throughout the year. The fruit is not ornamentally significant. Landscape Attributes Flashing Light Maiden Pinks is an herbaceous evergreen perennial with a mounded form. It brings an extremely fine and delicate texture to the garden composition and should be used to full effect. This plant will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. It is a good choice for attracting bees and butterflies to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats.   • Ceratostigma
    Ceratostigma Ceratostigma (/ˌsɛrətoʊˈstɪɡmə, sɪˌræ-/), or leadwort, plumbago, is a genus of eight species of flowering plants in the family Plumbaginaceae, native to warm temperate to tropical regions of Africa and Asia. Common names are shared with the genus Plumbago. They are flowering herbaceous plants, subshrubs, or small shrubs growing to 0.3–1 m (0.98– 3.28 ft) tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, simple, 1–9 cm long, usually with a hairy margin. Some of the species are evergreen, others deciduous. The flowers are produced in a compact inflorescence, each flower with a five-lobed corolla; flower colour varies from pale to dark blue to red-purple. The fruit is a small bristly capsule containing a single seed. Selected species Ceratostigma plumbaginoides (Bunge) Ceratostigma willmottianum Stapf Cultivation and uses Plants of this genus are valued in the garden for their late summer flower colour and their autumn leaf colour. The following varieties have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (confirmed 2017): Ceratostigma has been listed as one of the 38 plants that are used to prepare Bach flower remedies, a kind of alternative medicine promoted for its effect on mental and emotional health. Ceratostigma plumbaginoides, commonly called plumbago or leadwort, is a wiry, mat-forming perennial which spreads by rhizomes to form an attractive ground cover. Typically grows 6-10" tall on generally erect stems rising from the rhizomes. Oval to obovate, shiny, medium green leaves (to 2" long) turn bronze-red in autumn. Terminal clusters of 5-petaled, gentian blue flowers (1/2 to 3/4" diameter) appear above the foliage over a long summer to frost bloom period.
