Τι είν’ η πατρίδα μας; Performing ‘time out of joint’ at the National Theatre of Greece (2011-13) ‘We are going to open the chapter “Greece”. Our aim is to talk exclusively about our country.’1 (Anon 2011) With these words, in May 2011, the artistic director of the National Theatre of Greece Yiannis Houvardas launched the theatre’s programme for the autumn 2011 - spring 2013 period. The season under the title What is our motherland? (Τι ειν’ η πατρίδα μας;) featured works by Greek and non-Greek artists that focused on three areas: Greeks’ perceptions of themselves, non-Greeks’ views of the country and its people, and what Greece might signify in that particular historical moment. The What is our Motherland? Season that concluded Houvardas’s six-year tenure, included different kinds of events: performances, talks, rehearsed readings and exhibitions, they all offered a synchronic and diachronic perspective on the Greek nation.2 This article explores three performances of Greek plays that were programmed as part of that season: Lena Kitsopoulou’s Austras or Couch Grass (Άουστρας ή η Αγριαδα [2011]); Iakovos Kampanellis’s The Backyard of Miracles (Αυλή των Θαυμάτων, [1957/58]), and Spyridon Peresiadis’s Golfo (Γκόλφω, [1893/94]). These three texts offer insight into the performance of Greek national identity in markedly different historical moments: the pastoral drama Golfo was originally staged 1 All translations from Greek material are mine. The analysis is based on my experience as audience member of The Backyard of Miracles (February 2012) and Golfo (Epidaurus theatre, August 2013) as well as on the video recordings of the productions held at the library of the National Theatre in Athens; the reading of Austras is solely based on the video recording, the unpublished playscript and other documentation material available at the National Theatre library. -
Armed Forces Intervention in Post-War Turkey: a Methodological Approach of Greek Newspapers Through Political Analyses
PHOKION KOTZAGEORGIS ARMED FORCES INTERVENTION IN POST-WAR TURKEY: A METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH OF GREEK NEWSPAPERS THROUGH POLITICAL ANALYSES The Press as a political-social phenomenon may influence the forma tion of one’s conscience, make or break governments and influence public opinion in a decisive way. As an institution it may play an extremely important role in the writing of a countiy’s contemporary history. It is only recently that this last function of the Press has become the object of scientific research, resulting in the first attempts to write history using newspapers as the basic source. The present article aspires to contribute to the process of ‘deciphering’ the role played by the Press in the formulation or crystallisation of behaviours, political or other, vis-a-vis given facts or phenomena. The article aims at signposting the methodological principles in the presentation by the Greek newspapers of an external affairs event and its use by the political affairs editors of these newspapers. This article was con ceived in the course of study of the political game in Turkey as the prominence of the role of the army in that country became evident to the author. The actual cases of army intervention will not be dealt with here; what is of in terest is the reaction of the newspapers to the three military interventions in the political life of Turkey. In date order these took place on 27 May 1960, 12 March 1971 and 12 September 1980. The sources chosen are newspapers easily accessible to the public, of differing political persuasions; the time terminus of study is one month be fore and one after the date of intervention of the military. -

Its contribution to the historiography of the period stems from the fact that it constitutes the first academic study of the third largest resistance organisation in Greece, the 5/42 regiment of evzones. The study of this national resistance organisation can thus extend our knowledge of the Greek resistance effort, the political relations between the main resistance groups, the conditions that led to the civil war and the domestic relevance of British policies. -

Acts of Identification and the Politics of the “Greek Past”: Religion, Tradition, Self by Vaia Touna A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Religious Studies University of Alberta © Vaia Touna, 2015 ABSTRACT This study is about a series of operational acts of identification, such as interpretations, categorizations, representations, classifications, through which past materials have acquired their meaning and therefore identity. Furthermore, this meaning- making will be demonstrated always to be situational and relational in the sense that the meaning of past material is a historical product created by strategic historic agents through their contemporary acts of identification and, as situated historical products, they are always under scrutiny and constant re-fabrication by yet other historical agents who are on the scene with yet other goals. It will also be evident throughout this study that meanings (identities) do not transcend time and space, and neither do they hide deep in the core of material artifacts awaiting to be discovered. The Introduction lays the theoretical and methodological framework of the study, situating its historiographical and sociological interests in the study of identities and the past, arguing for an approach that looks at the processes and techniques by which material and immaterial artifacts acquire their meaning. In Chapter 1 I look at scholarly interpretations as an operational act of identification; by the use of such anachronisms (which are inevitable when we study the past) as the term religion and the idea of the individual self, a certain widely-shared, and thoroughly modern understanding of Euripides’ play Hippolytus was made possible. -

6 What the neighbor to the west says Greek–Turkish relations It is only in a foreign Land that you can understand that Greeks are your long lost brothers.1 There is nothing quite like a good quarrel with the United States or a crisis with Turkey, The Economist once commented, to persuade the Greeks to support their government;2 something the violent demonstrations during President Clinton’s visit to Athens in November 1999 certainly confirmed. There is a seeming unanimity in Greece over their country’s policies towards Washington and Ankara. However, unlike their uneasy, volatile relations with the United States, which tend to flare up at times of crisis, the Greeks are preoccupied with Turkey to the point of obsession. Their age-old conflict with their neighbor to the east absorbs them more than any other foreign policy issue. Considered a priority, Greek newspapers devote more column space to Turkey and related issues than to any of their European counterparts. Not so the Turkish press, which ranks the Greek–Turkish conflict only sixteenth in order of importance.3 It is a telling difference, representative of other spheres where the two coun- tries differ in terms of their perception and response to events. Take, for example, the 1919–22 war. In Turkey, the war, which replaced the old Ottoman-Islamic loyalties with a new national consciousness, is seen as a war of liberation and patriotic resurgence.4 In Greece, it is regarded as the greatest tragedy of modern times, a disaster, which wiped out 2000 years of Greek presence in Asia Minor.
