In this issue you will learn about a INSIDE THIS ISSUE sampling of the many interesting and innovative learning opportunities for all our students within CASA. I want to personally invite you to take the time to read about the accomplishments in the Department of Justice Studies that includes the Fifth Annual CSI Camp as well as a program we are very proud of, the Records Clearance Project. CSI Camp 4 The School of Journalism and Mass Communications offered the first ever Data Journalism Workshop with many experts in the journalism field. Another first, is that CASA coordinated hosting a portion of the annual Alzheimer’s Association Walk on SJSU’s campus. Records Clearance Project 5 We had a chance to meet with many of our emeritus and retired faculty at our annual luncheon. Many are vitally contributing to our community in so many ways as are all our alums, take a look at what they are doing. Data Journalism Workshop 6 We are proud of our CASA alums who are teaching in many of our departments and schools as well as volunteering as guest speakers, and hiring our graduates whenever possible. As I begin my second year as dean of CASA, I am very proud of the accomplishments that the staff, faculty, administrators and students Emeritus and Retired Faculty Luncheon 7 have achieved in the past year. CASA has grown to 352 faculty members, 4454 undergraduates as well as 2397 graduate students in 11 departments and schools.

Whalen Symposium Abstract – Award Consideration John Jacobson, Women’s and Gender Studies Word Count: 694, excluding title and bibliography #GirlsLikeUs: The Development of Femme Identities in the (Auto)biographies of Janet MoCk and Miss Major, BlaCk Trans Women Understanding the subjectivities oF black transgender women lies at the intersection oF multiple academic Fields. Revolutionaries such as Judith Butler, bell hooks and Kate Bornstein have all contributed to discourse surrounding transgender women oF color. To understand and humanize the subjectivities oF these women, there must be an interaction of gender theory, queer theory, queer of color critique, and black Feminism. Trans women oF color are routinely in the margins oF academic spaces because their lives are interactions of unique oppressed identities. This presentation puts the (auto)biographical lives and works (a memoir and documentary, respectively) oF two black trans women in context: Janet Mock, a young activist, author, and media maker, and Miss Major, an elderly activist whose liFe has spanned From Attica to Stonewall and beyond (Licona). It centers their stories through the black Feminist concept of “a healthy love for ourselves, our sisters and our community which allows us to continue our struggle and work” (Combahee River Collective). Through these methods oF black Feminist love, we can observe the ways Mock and Major have developed black trans Femme identities and how those identities are revolutionary. Mock and Major both establish self-love through their modes oF unique gender expression, the way they “become” women in the way that Simone de Beauvoir theorized through personal growth and gender expression. Their living oF this theory allows the idea oF womanhood, or Femme-central identity, to be a “process, a becoming, a constructing that cannot be rightfully said to originate or end” (Butler).

Ceux-ci peuvent prendre des formes diverses : discrimination à l’emploi, comportements haineux, violences ou encore stigmatisation dans le secteur de la santé2. En tant que mouvement féministe, progressiste et de gauche nous prônons l’égalité dans le respect des identités de genre de chacun·e. Afin d’apporter une pierre à cet édifice de l’inclusion, nous souhaitons visibiliser dans cette analyse la culture spécifique des ballrooms, espaces d’émancipation et de pouvoir. Par ce biais, nous voulons également mettre en lumière les combats des personnes transgenres. Au travers d’une description de la culture des ballrooms dans le contexte étasunien, nous aborderons la problématique de l’appropriation culturelle de la danse voguing. Nous verrons que ce phénomène d’appropriation à des fins commerciales efface les discriminations plurielles et intersectionnelles subies par les communautés latino-noire transgenres et, en même temps, nie complètement les privilèges des américain·e·s blanc·he·s cisgenres.
