Description/content The Earth's Critical Zone (CZ) is the thin, living, and permeable layer that connects the atmosphere with the geosphere and provides the living environment for most terrestrial biota. Humans live in the CZ and benefit from the vital services it provides, including waste remediation and clean water resources. Pollution, land use, and climate change increasingly alter the surface compartments of the CZ, but we have not yet explored this part of the earth enough to fully understand the consequences for the subsurface, the zone beginning below the highest density of plant roots and extending into the aquifers. The principle aim of the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) AquaDiva is to increase our understanding of the links between surface and subsurface, especially how organisms inhabiting the subsurface CZ reflect and influence their physical, ecological, and geochemical environment, and affect water and matter transiting the CZ. To achieve this, we have constructed a novel infrastructure platform, the Hainich Critical Zone Exploratory (CZE), to study how water and gas fluxes link surface vegetation and soils under different land management to aquifer complexes. Our interdisciplinary team applies new tools from the field of biology, chemistry, geoscience, and informatics to document the state and function of the subsurface: who is there, what the inhabitants are doing, and how this matters.

2 The combination of a structured study programme provided by iRTG AquaDiva on the one hand and the responsibility for their own projects on the other hand offers doctoral researchers the opportunity to become experts in understanding the role of the CZ as a fundamental ecosystem influencing the whole earth's surface biodiversity and the evolution of anthropogenic interference in the context of global change, including groundwater quality and supply, stabilisation of carbon, and nutrient and trace gas cycling.

Course Details

Course organisation The integrated Research Training Group (iRTG) AquaDiva is an international graduate school located in Jena and Leipzig. It belongs to the CRC AquaDiva, which was founded in 2013 by the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, the MPI of Biogeochemistry Jena, the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) Jena, and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) Leipzig. Research within the school focuses quantitative relationship between surface and subsurface biodiversity of the Earth's Critical Zone (CZ). Our aim is to advance the scientific qualification of our doctoral researchers. The iRTG AquaDiva has unique aspects that bring together hydrology, geology, and biology within the CZ, taught by international scientists in interdisciplinary courses. The aim of the iRTG AquaDiva is to support our doctoral researchers in gaining the skills they require to successfully pass their doctoral programme and prepare them to progress their career following graduation. We will help our researchers to become independent, achieving their goals through active participation in designing their training. Doctoral researchers are invited to profit from our flexible and personalised curriculum, tailored to their individual needs and advancement. Credit points will be earned in four categories: 1) scientific courses 2) soft skill workshops 3) publications/ outreach activities 4) other scientific activities To receive the iRTG AquaDiva certificate, doctoral researchers will have to select at least one activity of the scientific, soft skill, and publication/outreach module respectively. They also have to collect at least 12 credit points (http://www.aquadiva.uni- jena.de/GRADUATE+SCHOOL/Curriculum.de).

Through the offers of the Graduate Academy Jena (JGA), the Helmholtz Interdisciplinary GRADuate School for Environmental Research (HIGRADE), the Young Biodiversity Research Training Group (yDiv), the International Max Planck research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles (IMPRS- GBC), and the Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC), our doctoral researchers have access to a variety of workshops and classes to strengthen their scientific skills. Additionally, the iRTG AquaDiva office organises an annual writing retreat as well as workshops on topics such as proposal writing. Supervision of the doctoral students will be within the framework of a PhD advisory committee (PAC), in order to allow the best possible use of resources and to enable doctoral researchers to finish their doctoral theses within three years. In particular, the members of the PAC will assist in selecting regular and advanced courses required to broaden their knowledge in science as well as to effectively pursue world-class research in their specific fields of interest.

International elements International guest lecturers Integrated study abroad unit(s) Language training provided Courses are led with foreign partners Projects with partners in and abroad

Integrated study abroad A total of three months of foreign research visits gives PhD researchers the opportunity to unit(s) specialise and achieve further qualifications in a field of interest. This facilitates unique contacts with top experts in the field and increases the visibility of the research projects of our PhD researchers. Apart from these research visits, PhD researchers are encouraged to participate in international conferences, workshops, and summer schools.
