What rhetorical strategies and tactics did Kennedy employ in these speeches? How might Kennedy's speeches extend our understanding of presidential public address? To date, he has photographed 679 survivors in 33 cities in the U.S., as well as in Krakow, Prague and Tokyo. In his Denver ofce, where he is managing partner of real estate company Robmer Partners, ►• the survivors’ photos seem to watch over him. But it is Pregulman and his t,J wife, Amy Israel Pregulman, who look out for these elders. They discovered ,, through the photo project that 30 to 35 percent of the 100,000 Holocaust • survivors in the U.S. live in poverty. “They have a lot of trauma about being recognized and asking for help,” Amy says. The Pregulmans founded a " nonproft, KAVOD—Hebrew for “dignity”—to give emergency, confdential fnancial assistance to survivors who are identifed by Jewish Family Service ofces across the U.S. Through KAVOD and the photography project, they hope that Holocaust survivors will continue to be remembered. “Their biggest fear is that they and their stories will be forgotten,” says John. This study focuses on Fala’s rhetorical construction and function, both by and for the White House, media, and citizens. The study is divided into six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the significance of presidential pets and epistolary rhetoric. Chapter 2 examines the media coverage of Fala’s attempted ride to the 1941 Inauguration and the letters sent to the White House commenting on Fala’s actions that day. This chapter sets the foundation for the study by exploring the rhetorical nature of prosopopoeia often found in these letters. Chapter 3 explores how Fala was used to mobilize pet owners and animal lovers for the war effort. Chapter 4 describes how animal topoi were marshalled in the 1944 election following rumors that Fala had been left behind on an Aleutian isle.

Still, the Liberty Movement is quite unlike more progressive, grassroots movements, with its organizations and participants sometimes relying on established institutions for various forms of support. Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT BEEMER, LAWRENCE W., Ph.D., June 2011, English American Superhero Comics: Fractal Narrative and The New Deal (204 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Robert Miklitsch Coining the term "fractal narrative," this dissertation examines the complex storytelling structure that is particular to contemporary American superhero comics. Whereas other mediums most often require narrative to function as self-contained and linear, individual superhero comics exist within a vast and intricate continuity that is composed of an indeterminate number of intersecting threads. Identical to fractals, the complex geometry of the narrative structure found in superhero comics when taken as a whole is constructed by the perpetual iteration of a single motif that was established at the genre's point of origin in Action Comics #1. The first appearance of Superman institutes all of the features and rhetorical elements that define the genre, but it also encodes it with the specific ideology of The New Deal era. In order to examine this fractal narrative structure, this dissertation traces historical developments over the last seven decades and offers a close reading Marvel Comics' 2006 cross-over event, Civil War.
