Kennedy and Berlin Nicholas Labinski Marquette University Recommended Citation Labinski, Nicholas, "Evolution of a President: John F. Kennedy and Berlin" (2011). Master's Theses (2009 -). Paper 104. http://epublications.marquette.edu/theses_open/104 EVOLUTION OF A PRESIDENT: JOHN F. KENNEDYAND BERLIN by Nicholas Labinski A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School, Marquette University, in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Milwaukee, Wisconsin August 2011 ABSTRACT EVOLUTION OF A PRESIDENT: JOHN F. KENNEDYAND BERLIN Nicholas Labinski Marquette University, 2011 This paper examines John F. Kennedy’s rhetoric concerning the Berlin Crisis (1961-1963). Three major speeches are analyzed: Kennedy’s Radio and Television Report to the American People on the Berlin Crisis , the Address at Rudolph Wilde Platz and the Address at the Free University. The study interrogates the rhetorical strategies implemented by Kennedy in confronting Khrushchev over the explosive situation in Berlin. The paper attempts to answer the following research questions: What is the historical context that helped frame the rhetorical situation Kennedy faced? What rhetorical strategies and tactics did Kennedy employ in these speeches? How might Kennedy's speeches extend our understanding of presidential public address? What is the impact of Kennedy's speeches on U.S. German relations and the development of U.S. and German Policy? What implications might these speeches have for the study and execution of presidential power and international diplomacy? Using a historical-rhetorical methodology that incorporates the historical circumstances surrounding the crisis into the analysis, this examination of Kennedy’s rhetoric reveals his evolution concerning Berlin and his Cold War strategy. -

Imagining the Future into Reality: An Interdisciplinary Exploration of The Jetsons by Jane Elizabeth Myrick A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in English (Honors Scholar) Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in Education (Honors Scholar) Presented April 30, 2019 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Jane Elizabeth Myrick for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in English and Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in Education presented on April 30, 2019. Title: Imagining the Future into Reality: An Interdisciplinary Exploration of The Jetsons. Abstract approved: _____________________________________________________ Eric Hill This investigation examines The Jetsons’ vision of the future and tracks to what extent the content of the show is relevant to the modern era, both technologically and socially. Much of the dazzling technology in the show feels familiar, and most of it is either already available or is in development, so the innovations of the present are largely keeping pace with the show’s vision. Culturally, the show reflects the values of the era in which it was created (in the 1960s), and despite the show’s somewhat dated outlook on culture and society, we can still empathize and see our own modern experiences reflected back at us through an animated futuristic lens. Therefore, The Jetsons serves as a touchstone for our hopes for the future as well as the experiences of the past and the values and goals of the -

FALL 2018 EYE ON PRIVACY How views of public and private life have shifted in America I r . ::J. 1,000 WORDS ‘WE REMEMBER’ ~• John Pregulman, BA’80, has spent the past fve years taking photographs ... of Holocaust survivors. To date, he has photographed 679 survivors in 33 cities in the U.S., as well as in Krakow, Prague and Tokyo. In his Denver ofce, where he is managing partner of real estate company Robmer Partners, ►• the survivors’ photos seem to watch over him. But it is Pregulman and his t,J wife, Amy Israel Pregulman, who look out for these elders. They discovered ,, through the photo project that 30 to 35 percent of the 100,000 Holocaust • survivors in the U.S. live in poverty. “They have a lot of trauma about being recognized and asking for help,” Amy says. The Pregulmans founded a " nonproft, KAVOD—Hebrew for “dignity”—to give emergency, confdential fnancial assistance to survivors who are identifed by Jewish Family Service ofces across the U.S. Through KAVOD and the photography project, they hope that Holocaust survivors will continue to be remembered. “Their biggest fear is that they and their stories will be forgotten,” says John. History/Individual Interdisciplinary Program The Forgotten Man: The Rhetorical Construction of Class and Classlessness in Depression Era Media (206 pp.) Co-Directors of Dissertation: Katherine Jellison and Raymie McKerrow The following study is an analysis of visual and narrative cultural discourses during the interwar years of 1920-1941. These years, specifically those of the 1930s, represent a significant transitional point in American history regarding cultural identity and social class formation. This study seeks to present one profile of how the use of media contributed to a mythic cultural identity of the United States as both classless and middle-class simultaneously. The analysis is interdisciplinary by design and purports to highlight interaction between visual and oral rhetorical strategies used to construct and support the complex myths of class as they formed during this period in American history. This study focuses on Fala’s rhetorical construction and function, both by and for the White House, media, and citizens. The study is divided into six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the significance of presidential pets and epistolary rhetoric. Chapter 2 examines the media coverage of Fala’s attempted ride to the 1941 Inauguration and the letters sent to the White House commenting on Fala’s actions that day. This chapter sets the foundation for the study by exploring the rhetorical nature of prosopopoeia often found in these letters. Chapter 3 explores how Fala was used to mobilize pet owners and animal lovers for the war effort. Chapter 4 describes how animal topoi were marshalled in the 1944 election following rumors that Fala had been left behind on an Aleutian isle. -
The Cost of Engagement: Politics and Participatory Practices in the US Liberty Movement
The Cost of Engagement: Politics and Participatory Practices in the U.S. Liberty Movement Liana Gamber Thompson, Ph.D. A Case Study Report Working Paper Media, Activism and Participatory Politics Project Civic Paths Annenberg School For Communication and Journalism University of Southern California December 10, 2012 Cover Photo: Taylor Metting, 2011 Executive Summary In the past decade, young libertarians in the U.S., or members of the Liberty Movement as it is called, have utilized new media and technology along with more traditional modes of organizing to grow their movement, capitalizing on the participatory nature of the internet in particularly savvy and creative ways. Still, the Liberty Movement is quite unlike more progressive, grassroots movements, with its organizations and participants sometimes relying on established institutions for various forms of support. As this report highlights, the Liberty Movement represents a hybrid model, one that embraces participatory practices and interfaces with formal political organizations and other elite institutions. This case study outlines the: Relationship between institutional supports and participatory modes of engagement in the Liberty Movement Choices those in the Liberty Movement make about their use of online/offline spaces Role of community in supporting learning and organizing through the Liberty Movement, despite members’ active embrace of individualism Paths toward involvement in the Liberty Movement, including especially the roles of mentors and educators Political rationales -

American Superhero Comics: Fractal Narrative and the New Deal a Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the College of Arts
American Superhero Comics: Fractal Narrative and The New Deal A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Lawrence W. Beemer June 2011 © 2011 Lawrence W. Beemer. All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled American Superhero Comics: Fractal Narrative and The New Deal by LAWRENCE W. BEEMER has been approved for the English Department of Ohio University and the College of Arts and Sciences by ______________________________ Robert Miklitsch Professor of English ______________________________ Benjamin M. Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT BEEMER, LAWRENCE W., Ph.D., June 2011, English American Superhero Comics: Fractal Narrative and The New Deal (204 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Robert Miklitsch Coining the term "fractal narrative," this dissertation examines the complex storytelling structure that is particular to contemporary American superhero comics. Whereas other mediums most often require narrative to function as self-contained and linear, individual superhero comics exist within a vast and intricate continuity that is composed of an indeterminate number of intersecting threads. Identical to fractals, the complex geometry of the narrative structure found in superhero comics when taken as a whole is constructed by the perpetual iteration of a single motif that was established at the genre's point of origin in Action Comics #1. The first appearance of Superman institutes all of the features and rhetorical elements that define the genre, but it also encodes it with the specific ideology of The New Deal era. In order to examine this fractal narrative structure, this dissertation traces historical developments over the last seven decades and offers a close reading Marvel Comics' 2006 cross-over event, Civil War. -
