It is a marvel that it ever got made as an expensive American picture, with a star-studded cast. But unlike Fred Zinnemann's epic From Here to Eternity, which starred Deborah Kerr and Donna Reed, there are no women as characters — even if we glimpse them as dream figures in the minds of the soldiers. It's a deeply mysterious movie, interested in so many things above and beyond war, and so beautiful that the sudden sight of bodies and damage come as a surprise. Malick wrote the film himself and he shot and edited it according to his own timetable. But the standout performance comes from Nick Nolte as a ranting colonel whose authority has been questioned, and who is the clearest proof of the army that James Jones loved and hated. Topics Action and adventure films The 25 best action and war films of all time. Reuse this content. The Thin Red Line: No 10 best action and war film of all time | Film | The Guardian Pre-production went slowly. Weeks before filming began, Malick told Geisler and Roberdeau not to show up in Australia where the film was being made, ostensibly because George Stevens Jr. He did not tell them, however, that in he had a clause inserted in his contract barring the producers from the set. Malick and Toll shot for days in Australia using Panavision cameras and lenses, 24 days in the Solomon Islands and three days in the United States. They scouted the historic battlefields on Guadalcanal and shot footage, but health concerns over malaria limited filming to daylight hours only. Logistics were also difficult to shoot the entire film there: [11] As director of photography John Toll put it, "It's still a bit difficult to get on and off the island, and we had some scenes that involved or extras. We would have had to bring everybody to Guadalcanal, and financially it just didn't make sense". A base camp was set up and roads carved out of the mountain. Transporting actors and crew members up the hill took two hours. Malick's unconventional filming techniques included shooting part of a scene during a bright, sunny morning only to finish it weeks later at sunset. He made a habit of pointing the camera away during an action sequence and focus on a parrot , a tree branch or other fauna. Billy Bob Thornton recorded narration that was scrapped. Martin Sheen and Viggo Mortensen participated in readthroughs of the script and are thanked in the end credits. According to Jones, "Malick removed scenes with dialogue whenever possible, with the final film varying greatly from the original concept". The editing resulted in many of the well-known cast members being on screen for only a brief period. John Travolta and George Clooney's appearances are little more than cameos , yet Clooney's name appears prominently in the marketing of the movie. The unfinished film was screened for the New York press in December and Adrien Brody attended a screening to find that his originally significant role, "to carry the movie", [17] as he put it, had been reduced to two lines and approximately five minutes of screen time. On April 15, , an interview with Brody revealed that he was still upset over the removal of his work. He expressed his opinions in an interview with the London newspaper The Independent. Malick was upset that the studio screened his unfinished version for critics and Penn ended up helping him in the editing room, shaping the final version. The director refused to subject his film to test screenings before delivering his final cut. The film score was composed by Hans Zimmer , with additional music from John Powell. Zimmer wrote several hours of music, and an abundance of different themes, before Malick started to shoot the film. The director played the music on the set, while filming, to get himself, and the rest of the crew and actors in the right frame of mind. The official soundtrack features tracks that were not used on the film and some tracks from the film are not found on the CD. The film features several pieces of Melanesian choral music sung by the Choir of All Saints in Honiara and the Melanesian Brotherhood in Tabalia , only one of which is featured on the soundtrack. Gene Siskel described it as the "finest contemporary war film I've seen, supplanting Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan from earlier this year, or even Oliver Stone 's Platoon from He wrote, "The movie's schizophrenia keeps it from greatness this film has no firm idea of what it is about , but doesn't make it bad. It is, in fact, sort of fascinating The battle scenes themselves are masterful, in creating a sense of the geography of a particular hill, the way it is defended by Japanese bunkers, the ways in which the American soldiers attempt to take it Actors like Sean Penn, John Cusack, Jim Caviezel and Ben Chaplin find the perfect tone for scenes of a few seconds or a minute, and then are dropped before a rhythm can be established". In his review for Time , Richard Corliss wrote, "Some films deal in plot truth; this one expresses emotional truth, the heart's search for saving wisdom, in some of the most luscious imagery since Malick's last film, the Days of Heaven ". However, the atmosphere created by John Toll's breathtaking cinematography and Hans Zimmer's powerful score is occasionally compromised. The parade of cameos John Travolta, George Clooney, Woody Harrelson and John Cusack briefly appear is somewhat distracting, and the fact that Bell and Witt both have Appalachian accents sometimes makes the characters hard to differentiate. Yet, even though it's confusing at times and perhaps a little long , Line is still a film of rare substance and power. Owen Gleiberman gave the film a "B-" in his review for Entertainment Weekly and wrote, " The Thin Red Line could, I think, turn out to be this season's Beloved , a movie too paralyzingly high-minded to connect with audiences".

Palabras clave: Terrence Malick; Martin Heidegger; Cristianismo; Mundo; Espectador; Conversión [en] The Conversion of Terrence Malick: A Worldview Translated into the Film Medium Abstract. They seem like fun, easy projects, when in reality they are arduous ventures beset by countless pitfalls. The actor (whose creative labour produces the performances) can become obscured by the star (associated with existential qualities). It is difficult to accurately assess the industrial, cultural and aesthetic factors that shape audience perspectives and actors’ careers. There are no straightforward ways to connect star studies with accounts, for example, of African-American cinema. Even ‘star image’ is an ambiguous term. Martin Shingler notes that star studies can (and should) consider a host of issues, including ‘a performer’s star qualities and idiolect, their career trajectory … the significance of collaborators … the emergence of their type and star vehicles’ (2012: 183). Beyond this, these studies will show how ‘stars embody, incarnate or personify social groups or historical moments, [and negotiate] ideological contradictions that emerge within or between social groups’; on the flip side, they also aim to clarify ‘how certain types of audiences or members of a specific social group … have engaged with and made use of stars at particular historical moments’ (ibid.). Juggling disparate visions of stardom, these studies consider how a star functions as ‘an industrial marketing device’, a meaning- producing element within films and a working professional involved in the fields of art and performance (Gledhill 1991a: xiii).

Pomocí dvou vybraných filmů, které vznikly v rozmezí zhruba dvaceti let po sobě, se pokusím přiblížit Malickovy tendence ve zvukové dramaturgii a její částečnou interpre- taci. Seznámím čtenáře s krátkým životopisem a filmografií Terrence Malicka a to přede- vším proto, abych ho uvedl do kontextu doby a přiblížil jeho způsob uvažování. V termino- logicko-analytické části práce se budu zabývat popisem zvukových kategorií a praktickou analýzou Malickových děl a to z hlediska podobnosti, interpretace a zajimavých dramatur- gických momentů ve vybraných scénách. Klíčová slova: Terrence Malick, zvuková dramaturgie, voiceover, Tenká červená linie, Zapadákov ABSTRACT Main target of this work is to analyse films of Terrence Malick from the sound perspective. Using two selected films which were made twenty years in a row i will try to approach Malick´s tendencies in sound dramaturgy and it´s partial interpretation. I will acquaint rea- ders with brief biography and filmography to classify him into the context of time and ap- proaching his way of thinking. In terminological-analytical part i will deal with the description of the sound categories and practical analysis of Malick´s film in terms of simi- larities, interpretations and interesting dramaturgical moments of selected scenes. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE PRESENTS COMPREHENSIVE TERRENCE MALICK RETROSPECTIVE Moments of Grace: The Collected Terrence Malick includes all of his features, some alternate versions, and a preview screening of his new film A Hidden Life November 15–December 8, 2019 Astoria, New York, November 12, 2019—In celebration of Terrence Malick’s new film, the deeply spiritual, achingly ethical, and politically resonant A Hidden Life, Museum of the Moving Image presents the comprehensive retrospective Moments of Grace: The Collected Terrence Malick, from November 15 through December 8. The films in the series span a period of nearly 50 years, opening with Malick’s 1970s breakthroughs Badlands (1973) and Days of Heaven (1978), through his career-revival masterworks The Thin Red Line (1998) and The New World (2005), and continuing with his 21st- century films—from Cannes Palme d’Or winner The Tree of Life (2011); the trio of To the Wonder (2012), Knight of Cups (2015), and Song to Song (2017); and sole documentary project Voyage of Time (2016)—through to this year’s A Hidden Life. Two of these films will be presented in alternate versions—Voyage of Time and The New World—a testament to Malick’s ambitious and exploratory approach to editing. In addition to Malick’s own feature films, the series includes Pocket Money (1972), an ambling buddy comedy with Lee Marvin and Paul Newman, which he wrote (but did not direct), and Thy Kingdom Come (2018), the documentary featurette shot on the set of To the Wonder by photographer Eugene Richards.
