She has fourteen years experience of working as an education developer in a range of disciplines. She is joint coordinator of the Enquiry and Problem-based learning Project (Strategic Innovation Fund, Ireland) led by University College Dublin. Her doctorate thesis focused on what we can learn about problem-based learning from listening to how PBL students talked about PBL in tutorials. She has presented keynote PBL papers at conferences in Ireland, England and Finland. She has published in the areas of academic development, problem-based learning and peer observation of teaching. She is particularly interested in enhancing staff and student creativity through problem-based learning, collaborative academic writing, innovations in curriculum design and the use of visuals and poetry in facilitating learning. Diane Cashman is an Educational Technologist in the UCD Centre for Teaching and Learning and is the coordinator of the NDLR Veterinary & Bio-Environmental Sciences Community of Practice (CoP). Diane graduated from Cork Institute Technology with an Honours Degree in Multimedia. Recently she completed a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning in 2007 and is presently completing a MSc in eLearning in DIT. Diane has several years experience developing and designing eLearning materials in both the private sector and in Higher Education. Her previous role in Kingston University London as an Educational Developer involved designing and implementing innovative Blended Learning modules. Helen Fallon is Deputy Librarian at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. She has designed and developed a wide-range of information literacy initiatives, including an accredited undergraduate information literacy module, as part of the NUI Maynooth BA in Local and Community Studies. As project manager of a Higher Education Authority Strategic Initiatives- funded report on postgraduate skills development, she developed a keen interest in this area and is now part of a team delivering an accredited generic skills module in Communication to postgraduates in Science & Engineering at NUI Maynooth. As part of the Academic and National Library Training Co-operative (ANLTC), she developed a writing for academic publication programme for staff in Irish university libraries. Brendan Hall is a Postgraduate Researcher at the Centre for Active Learning at the University of Gloucestershire. An Earth Science graduate from the University of Glasgow he is currently working on his PhD thesis investigating the teaching and learning of troublesome concepts, with a particular interest in climate change. Orla Hanratty is currently employed in the Teaching and Learning Centre in NUI Maynooth and is responsible for a variety of projects including the Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education. As an academic developer she also designed and developed programmes for new and experienced teaching staff including a variety of supports for postgraduate tutors and demonstrators in department-specific workshops and cross-faculty programmes. Other current interests include reflective practice and civic engagement in Higher Education. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education. EMERGING ISSUES II i Conor Heagney is a senior lecturer at the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology. He is also the programme co-ordinator of the Bachelor of Business in Enterprise. Conor has fifteen years teaching experience at third level in accountancy, finance and taxation. Prior to entering academia, he worked as a tax adviser for sixteen years in Sligo, Dublin, Hong Kong and Los Angeles with Gilroy, Gannon & Co, Ernst & Young and KPMG. Conor was a member of the Board of Business Studies of the National Council for Educational Awards (NCEA – now

    Canadian Journal for Studies in Discourse and Writing/Rédactologie 51 Volume 29, 2019 http://journals.sfu.ca/cjsdw Article Learner-Created Podcasts: Fostering Information Literacies in a Writing Course Stephanie Bell York University Abstract This paper describes an experimental learner-created podcasting assignment in a first-year undergraduate research skills course for professional writers. The podcasting assignment serves as a contextualized experiential writing project that invites students to refine their research skills by participating in the invention of an emerging genre of radio storytelling. The power of the podcast assignment lies in the liminal space it creates for learners. It moves students beyond familiar and regimented essay conventions to an unstable writing environment where digital tools for producing, publishing, and negotiating meaning offer a range of possible audiences, modalities, forms, and modes of meaning making. This space creates the pedagogical conditions for epistemic development, through which students adopt as their own the research practices of adept and experienced writers. The multiple demands of this course on writing, research, and digital environments generates the beginnings of interdisciplinary writing pedagogy involving Kent’s (1993, 1999) postprocess mindset, the ACRL’s (2015) Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education, Baxter Magolda’s (1999) constructive-developmental pedagogy, and Arroyo (2013)’s elaboration of participatory digital writing pedagogy. Vincent LIQUETE ( Bordeaux University – IMS/CNRS UMR 5218 [Human Engineering and Knowledge Engineering (Team CIH)] [email protected] / [email protected] Summary of paper: The issue of transliteracy in general and particularly informational transliteracy is increasingly being debated worldwide and from extremely varying perspectives. These concepts refer to highly varied cultural and professional realities and contexts. In this paper we will discuss three dimensions and issues. First, we will attempt to delineate the scope and range of current thinking by researchers in information and communication sciences in France with regard to informational transliteracy, and present its four main components. Second, we will lay the claim that the informational transliteracy approach goes beyond the “Media and Information Literacies (MIL)” approach, in particular by giving all due importance to issues related to learning with computers, i. e. “computation”. Finally, we will present some new thinking that is currently being implemented in the French education system and will present some research projects involving informational transliteracy (LIMIN-R project, Translit project, etc.).     Adapting reading intervention for online students Baiyun Chen Atsusi Hirumi University of Central Florida Background Information With the advances of computer and network technologies, student enrollment in distance education has increased rapidly since the 1990’s. In 2003, it is estimated that about 40,000 to 50,000 K-12 students are enrolled in online courses nationwide (Golden, Wicks, & Williams, 2004). With the ever-increasing number of K-12 students who attend online program, researchers state in a report on virtual school in United States that “online education program(s) … already are having a significant impact on public education” (Watson, Winograd, & Kalmon, May 2004). Most likely, the K-12 online programs will take an increasingly important role in the school system of the United States. According to Building a Snapshot of Virtual Schools Across the Nation by Collins, “12 states have established online high school programs and 5 others are developing them… 25 states allow for the creation of so- called cyber charter schools, and 32 states have e-learning initiatives under way” (Collins, 2004). In the future, the option of e-learning will be available to every child for purposes of advanced study, credit recovery or remedial learning. The target population of a virtual school encompasses gifted students, students seeking credit recovery, and at-risk and dropout students. The focus of this paper is the problematic students who do not succeed in traditional classroom. The at-risk and dropout student population size is shockingly large. In 2000, some 3.8 million young adults were out of school without a high school credential, accounting for 11% of 16- to 24-year-olds in the United States (Kaufman, Alt, & MPR Associates, 2001).

JOURNALISM By Tom Deats HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA By TomDeats Associate Professor of Journalism University of North Dakota THE EARLY YEARS Almost from the day the University of North Dakota opened in 1884, UNO students showed an interest and enthusiam for journalistic activities that for many years went largely unmatched by either the university administration or the faculty. Within two years of the beginning of classes at the university, the students were publishing their own "newspaper," a magazine-style journal titled University News. There were no classes in journalism at UNO. No academic credit was given for working on the student publication. And no thought was being given to starting a journalism program. But the students wanted a "newspaper" so they published their own. The first issue of University News was largely the work of student A.R.
