Rosalia Condorelli Scientific Curriculum Rosalia Condorelli Scientific Curriculum Brief Curriculum Rosalia Condorelli is Assistant Professor in Sociology at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of Catania University (Italy). She teaches Sociology and Analysis of Complex Social Systems at the same Department of Social and Political Science. Her prevailing research interest concerns the Complexity and Chaos Theory and the application of its nonlinear modeling to the analysis of social phenomena (Nonlinear Dynamical Systems Theory and Nonlinear Equation Models). Currently, she studies the social integration issues in a increasingly differentiated, individualized and globalized modern society in the light of the most recent theoretical and methodological acquisitions in the field of complex systems. She is member of the Italian Society for Chaos and Complexity, of the Society for Chaos Theory in Psichology & Life Science, and of SPe (Sociology for individual). CURRICULUM VITAE Rosalia Condorelli is Confirmed University Researcher from 1/01/2004 and has the National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor from 05-04-2018. She teaches Sociology and Analysis of Complex Social Systems at the Department of Political and Social Sciences, University of Catania. Education • 1989: Diploma of Classical Maturity obtained at the "Nicola Spedalieri", National High School of Catania, with a score of 60/60; • 1993: Degree in Political Sciences (in General Sociology), Faculty of Political Science, University of Catania, with 110/110 cum laude on the basis of a dissertation concerning the orientation of social actors in reference to controversial issue of organ donation. In examining the wider logic of French imperial expansion around the Mediterranean, this dissertation bridges the Revolutionary, Napoleonic, Restoration (1815-30), July Monarchy (1830-48), Second Republic (1848-52), and Second Empire (1852-70) periods. Van Kley, Ohio State University Conspiracy Theories and Theories of Conspiracy: A Review Essay In the course of several centuries of rumored conspiracies, two of the most obdurate ones were religious in character and pitted Jesuits against Jansenists. The Jesuit side of the Jansenist controversy was first in the field with the publication in 1654 of Jean Filleau’s Relation juridique that accused the first Jansenists including Cornelius Jansen and the abbé de Saint-Cyran of having plotted the destruction of Catholicism at a meeting at Chartreuse of Bourgfontaine in 1621.[1] Assuming the mask of Catholics, the plotters planned to undermine Catholicism from within by means of a theology featuring a Protestant-like predestinating god combined with inaccessibly high moral demands, thereby driving the despairing faithful out of the church and into an amoral Deism. The plot died hard as the Jesuit Pierre- Louis Patouillet took the occasion of the centennial of Filleau’s book in 1754 to publish a demonstration of the “reality” of the plot as evident in its realization, adding to its original aim, that of deforming the structure of the church from a monarchical hierarchy to an aristo-democratic polity.[2] At about the same time, other Jesuits espied another dimension to the plot, that of transforming the French monarchy into a de facto republic that would make kings dependent on their subjects without whose consent no monarch could do anything.[3] It took real Jansenists until around 1730 to answer the charge of being anti-Catholic plotters with the denunciation of a Jesuit plot to destroy Catholicism fully as insidious as the one of which Jesuits had accused them.

Calabresi and Matteo Godi Abstract Focusing on the evolution of constitutional thought in Italy is key to understand not only Italy’s current legal order, but also constitutionalism more generally. In Italy, there has not been a true rupture point between the pre-unitary legal systems and the new constitutional order; a comprehensive study of Italian constitutional law, then, cannot do away with the preceding legal orders as modern textbooks do. And a study of modern constitutionalism cannot ignore Italy’s contribution: centuries of attempts at constitutionalizing, detached from any meaningful revolutionary vacuum. This Article sets out to fill that gap by focusing on the little known, three-centuries-long history of Italian constitutionalism, and it does so by offering many previously unpublished English translations of Italian constitutions. Part II discusses the genesis of modern constitutional thought in Italy. It focuses, in particular, on the Draft Constitution of Tuscany (1787); the Second Constitution of the Cisalpine Republic (1798); and the Constitution of the Kingdom of Italy (1802). Part III analyzes the Albertine Statute, the most famous pre-modern Italian constitution, first enacted in 1848 by the Kingdom of Piedmont and Sardinia and later extended to the entire nation following the unification of Italy in 1861. Part IV briefly focuses on the 1948 Constitution of the Italian Republic – Italy’s current constitutional document. Part V extrapolates from this history in order to make a few normative claims. A brief conclusion follows. ‘If you want to go on a pilgrimage to the birthplace of our Constitution, go to the mountains where the Partisans died, go to the prisons where they were jailed, go to the fields where they were hung.

Burson Georgia Southern University [email protected] Abstract Although works on religious, specifically Catholic, and more specifically Jansenist, contributions to the Enlightenment abound, the contributions of the Jesuits to the Enlightenment have remained relatively unexplored since Robert R. Palmer initially identified affinities between Jesuit thought and the emergence of the French Enlight- enment as long ago as 1939. Accordingly, this introduction and the essays contained within the pages of this special issue revisit and further explore ways in which the individual Jesuits contributed to broader patterns of European intellectual and cul- tural history during the age of Enlightenment. Taken together, the contributions to this special issue investigate different aspects of an important question: to what ex- tent were some Jesuits (at time, despite themselves, and at times, even against the grain of the order’s official positions) unlikely contributors to the Enlightenment? This question of whether one might speak of a specifically Jesuit Enlightenment is com- plicated by the still unsatisfactory scholarly consensus regarding the definition of the Enlightenment. But, growing scholarly attention to the nature of Catholic Enlighten- ment, and to the continuities linking eighteenth-century preoccupations to the con- troversies of the seventeenth century have further underscored the need for greater attention to Jesuit contributions to the Enlightenment itself. In this introduction, rather than considering the Enlightenment as a series of transformative and largely eighteenth-century debates rooted in the middle or late seventeenth century, I suggest that Jesuit engagement with the Enlightenment is best understood if the Enlighten- ment is more firmly anchored somewhat earlier in the culture of late Humanism—a culture that was first weaponized then chastened within the crucible of the European Reformations.
