The Dialectics of Virtuosity: Dance in the People’s Republic of China, 1949-2009 by Emily Elissa Wilcox A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Joint Doctor of Philosophy with the University of California, San Francisco in Medical Anthropology of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Xin Liu, Chair Professor Vincanne Adams Professor Alexei Yurchak Professor Michael Nylan Professor Shannon Jackson Spring 2011 Abstract The Dialectics of Virtuosity: Dance in the People’s Republic of China, 1949-2009 by Emily Elissa Wilcox Joint Doctor of Philosophy with the University of California, San Francisco in Medical Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Xin Liu, Chair Under state socialism in the People’s Republic of China, dancers’ bodies became important sites for the ongoing negotiation of two paradoxes at the heart of the socialist project, both in China and globally. The first is the valorization of physical labor as a path to positive social reform and personal enlightenment. The second is a dialectical approach to epistemology, in which world-knowing is connected to world-making. In both cases, dancers in China found themselves, their bodies, and their work at the center of conflicting ideals, often in which the state upheld, through its policies and standards, what seemed to be conflicting points of view and directions of action. Since they occupy the unusual position of being cultural workers who labor with their bodies, dancers were successively the heroes and the victims in an ever unresolved national debate over the value of mental versus physical labor.

  • Bronislava Nijinska in Revolutionary Russia
An Amazon of the Avant-Garde: Bronislava Nijinska in Revolutionary Russia LYNN GARAFOLA In August 1915 Alexander Kochetovsky, a graduate of Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet and a veteran of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, arrived in Kiev to take up a position as ballet master and dancer at the Kiev City Theater [Kievskii Gorodskoi Teatr].1 With him was his wife, Bronislava Nijinska, a former Ballets Russes soloist trained at St. Petersburg's Imperial Ballet School and also hired as a dancer, their two-year-old daughter Irina, and Bronislava's mother, Eleanora Bereda, a retired dancer who began her career at Warsaw's Wielki Theater. For Kochetovsky, the Kiev years would be a brief interlude in a career that ended in Houston teaching ballet to the daughters of oil barons. For Nijinska, they marked the start of an international career as one of the twentieth-century's most innovative choreographers. Nijinska spent nearly six years in Kiev. There she gave birth to a second child and was abandoned not once but twice by Kochetovsky. More importantly, it was in Kiev that she became a modernist artist. In the experimental ferment that followed the 1917 Revolution and the short-lived Ukrainian republic, she opened her own studio, which she called the School of Movement. She worked with visual artists at the cutting edge of the era's avant-garde and with theater directors challenging the conventions of the dramatic stage. She created solos and group works and presented her first full evenings of choreography. She taught in studios identified with the artistic left and with Jewish and Ukrainian cultural organizations.

It has been accepted for inclusion in English Dissertations by an authorized administrator of ScholarWorks @ Georgia State University. For more information, please contact [email protected]. THE SEXUAL POLITICS OF MEAT SUBSTITUTES by GREGORY JAMES FLAIL Under the Direction of George Pullman Food choice has intrigued generations of scholars seeking insight into the rituals that characterize the cultural and sub-cultural values of various nations and eras. Among the more recent cultural phenomena to influence theories about the body is food choice. Perhaps there is no argumentative issue more pervasive than that of food choice, because everyone must eat. The morsels that people consume are chosen as often as not for their symbolic value. A review of the literature of dietary discourse and representation reveals a gap where studies of vegetarian and vegan identity, mass media, and mass markets are concerned. This dissertation utilizes theories of representation, cultural studies, and discourse analysis to uncover culturally specific attitudes in the marketing of food with regard to vegetable-based diets, the foods that they consist of, and the people who eat them.

There are physical aspects that make us brown-eyed or blue-eyed, that make us tall or not so tall, or give us curly or straight hair. Our parents might be rich or poor. We could be born in a crowded, bustling city or in a rural area. While we live our own individual lives, what has gone before us, our history, always has some effect on us. In thinking about what influenced my own life, I began by considering the events and people who came before me. I learned about most of the people who had some effect on my life through family stories, census records, old photographs, and, in the case of Lucas D. Dennis, the records of the Works Progress Administration at the University of West Virginia. • 1 • The Works Progress Administration was a gov- ernment program formed to create jobs during the Depression years.

  • A Musical Personality
Kurs: BA 1002 Examensarbete, master, jazz, 30 hp 2021 Konstnärlig masterexamen i musik, 120 hp Institutionen för jazz Handledare: Klas Nevrin Marína Ósk Þórólfsdóttir A Musical Personality A quest towards discovering my identity in music and developing it into a musical personality Skriftlig reflektion inom självständigt, konstnärligt arbete Det självständiga, konstnärliga arbetet finns dokumenterat i KMH:s digitala arkiv. Abstract The purpose of my research was to develop and strengthen my personality in music as a vocalist, so I would be able to freely let it out during any musical encounter. My base for the research was a duet with guitarist Mikael Máni Ásmundsson, but it was during a rehearsal with him that I realised for the first time I even had a musical personality – that I liked. Before, I had often felt uncomfortable and tense when playing music and not sure who I was as an artist. I limited myself to working with West Coast jazz, jazz standards, and lyrical improvisation, and I used various methods such as transcribing, ear-training in multiple forms, and improvisation exercises, to develop my musical personality. The research resulted in a nine-song album that Mikael Máni and I created in 2020 under the artist-name Tendra. That album is my examination project. I learned a great deal from the experience. I gained self-confidence, independence trust and calmness during this journey, and at last I feel comfortable with who I am as an artist – my musical personality has finally moved in. Keywords and guiding lights: storytelling, identity, melodies, lyrics, scatting, improvising, expression, rooted, musical ear, comfortable, personality.
