Im Nachhinein stellen sich solche Prognosen immer wieder nur als bloßes Wunschdenken heraus. Dieses Wunschdenken ist im Vorfeld der O- lympischen Spiele in Peking voll im Gange. Angesichts der Größe des Landes, der dort an- zutreffenden wirtschaftlichen Heterogenität und der demographischen Verhältnisse sollten die konjunkturellen Erwartungen, die China mit den Olympischen Spielen in Peking verknüpft, nur sehr bescheiden ausfallen. China ist heute eine Volkswirtschaft mit Wachstumsinseln. Diese Wachstumsinseln sind wohl global vernetzt, doch von einer geschlossenen wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung kann in China keine Rede sein. Vielmehr zeichnet sich China durch unglaubliche Disparitäten aus. Große Regionen Chinas sind nach wie vor unterversorgt und in manchen Wachstumsinseln wächst das Brutto-Inlandsprodukt um 16%. Die große Mehrheit der Regionen zeichnet sich jedoch durch Armut und rückläufiges Wachstum aus.
