WoMAU later became accredited by the United Nations Educational, TScientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) as an official partner with consultative status of SHS and Advisory NGO of the ICH Intergovernmental Committee in 2009. The main objective of the members of the WoMAU is to promote peace trough martial arts as an essential part of the intangible heritage of the nations. This is the primary and fundamental purpose of the creation of WoMAU. The martial art is not limited to the technical attack and protection, but as part of the intangible culture of humanity, it teaches a variety of human beings to educate the perfection, mental and physical well-being, to respect the values and diversity, also it teaches to interact with people and to exchange with culture. As years go by, the WoMAU members grew in number, some International Federations and National Sports Associations (NSA’s) came to be members of WoMAU. Also the number of traditional martial arts included into ICH list of UNESCO grew in number such as Taekkyen, Capoeira circle, Tahteeb, stick game, Kureshi in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Kok boru, traditional horse game and etc. I think that WoMAU should reinforce cooperation with UNESCO and ICHCAP to promote the role and value of traditional sports and its inclusion in ICH list of UNESCO. In my mind WoMAU should promote world martial arts in its web site through open education resources (master classes) in order people can get rich information when they visit the web-site. In my mind in order to enhance the policy and raise awareness of people about martial arts in countries WoMAU should organize events in member states. It will be a great opportunity to promote lifestyle among people particularly among future generation. 2019 Summer 05 Through international relationships the martial arts help raise people’s desire of promoting peace for sustainable development. These martial art exchanges among countries are used as a tool of diplomacy to foster mutual understanding. The IMAC is the great opportunity for martial arts family for exchanging culture and traditions of nations which serve for peace building in our common world. I think that disabled people also should be involved in IMAC in order to be equal member of the society. I do hope that martial arts family members will continue to be martial art leaders by being involved in WoMAU activities and advocating healthy lifestyle in the world. 2019 Summer 07 Expert’s Column 전문가 칼럼 Culture ODA & Sports Development Cooperation 문화 ODA와 스포츠 개발협력 t the 70th United Nations General Assembly in September 2015, inter- A national society brought an end to the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) proclaimed in 2000 and declared the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The hot topic in the post-MDGs era is the ambitious goal of ‘inclusive sustainability’ to accomplish the universal goals of the humankind by 2030. Mr. Kim Taekyoon The SDGs represent a complex of massive Professor, the Vice Dean of the Seoul National University Graduate School of International Studies development projects that encompass 17 goals, 169 sub-goals, and 230 global indicators. All members of the United Nations, whether they are developing or advanced countries, are required to submit a Voluntary National Review (VNR) to the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in every four years as a report on their progress in the implementation of the SDGs. As the SDGs involve all sorts of tasks related to the sustainable development of a state, including social development, economic growth, environ-ment, climate change, insti- tutional development and governance, the substantial implementation of the SDGs requires society-wide consensus. 08 WoMAU News To my regret, there have not been active of international development from Imperialism public relations activities related to the SDGs in the 19th century or the Marshall Plan under in Korea, and some even see the SDGs, which which the USA provided massive aids for comprehend both local development and the restoration of the Free World in Europe international cooperation, as a mere equivalent after the World War II, but indeed all these to official development assistance (ODA).

  • Animating Race the Production and Ascription of Asian-Ness in the Animation of Avatar: the Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra
Animating Race The Production and Ascription of Asian-ness in the Animation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra Francis M. Agnoli Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies April 2020 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 2 Abstract How and by what means is race ascribed to an animated body? My thesis addresses this question by reconstructing the production narratives around the Nickelodeon television series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-08) and its sequel The Legend of Korra (2012-14). Through original and preexisting interviews, I determine how the ascription of race occurs at every stage of production. To do so, I triangulate theories related to race as a social construct, using a definition composed by sociologists Matthew Desmond and Mustafa Emirbayer; re-presentations of the body in animation, drawing upon art historian Nicholas Mirzoeff’s concept of the bodyscape; and the cinematic voice as described by film scholars Rick Altman, Mary Ann Doane, Michel Chion, and Gianluca Sergi. Even production processes not directly related to character design, animation, or performance contribute to the ascription of race. Therefore, this thesis also references writings on culture, such as those on cultural appropriation, cultural flow/traffic, and transculturation; fantasy, an impulse to break away from mimesis; and realist animation conventions, which relates to Paul Wells’ concept of hyper-realism.
