THE UNIVERSAL COLOR LANGUAGE Kenneth L. Kelly Preface to 1976 Edition The ISCC-NBS Color Names Dictionary (NBS Circular 553) has gone through six previous printings and has sold nearly 14,000 copies. In the years since this Dictionary became available in January 1956, a number of significant advances have been made in this field of colorimetry. The importance of the Centroid numbers became increasingly clear, so they were added to the appropriate color-name blocks in the color-name charts in section 13 of the 1963 (4th) and subsequent printings. Otherwise the Color Names Dictionary remains exactly the same. The demand for colors to illustrate the color-name blocks was voiced even before publication in November 1955. However, due to the high cost of developing precise colors and the lack of funds, the development of the ISCC-NBS Centroid Colors was delayed until 1965. At that time, they were published with financial assistance from the Color Marketing Group. These colors were produced by the Toby Color Card Company of St. Louis, and the Munsell Color Company of Baltimore supervised the final produc- tion, thus assuring that the Centroid Colors would meet the very stringent tolerances specified for them. The Centroid Color Charts became the first Supplement to the Color Names Dictionary. When the Centroid Color Charts were received in early 1965, there were fewer than 100 copies of the Color Names Dictionary in stock at the Government Printing Office. Since it would have required some time to update the Dictionary, it was reprinted with- out change (5th printing, 5/12/65). The necessary revisions including a description of the Centroid Colors were then incorporated into a paper entitled A Universal Color Language (UCL), also published in 1965. That paper is the second Supplement to the Color Names Dictionary. Since the Color Names Dictionary is still the basic document in this field of color and is now out of stock, it is being reprinted (7th printing) and updated by revising The Universal Color Language and publishing it along with the Dictionary. The Color Names Dictionary, The Universal Color Language and the Centroid Color Charts form a com- plete unit and are most useful when purchased together. For the first time all three items can be purchased from the Office of Standard Reference Materials, National Bureau of Standards. In addition, this volume containing the UCL and the Color Names Dictionarj' can be purchased from the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office.     ASK A MASTER GARDENER COLORFUL WINTER STEMS By Trish Grenfell, Placer County Master Gardener Q Each winter my bloodtwig dogwood has produced a spectacular show with its bright red stems, but this year the branches are a dull grey. What happened? Can you suggest another shrub/small tree with bright winter stems to replace it? A If your bloodtwig dogwood Cornus sanguinea is healthy, there is a simple method to restore its glory next winter: prune it! Late winter or early spring (February-March), before the leaves begin to appear on the stems, is the best time to prune. This allows the maximum time to enjoy the colorful stems, while encouraging vigorous new shoots and foliage for the coming season. For dogwoods with intense bark colors, the branches you want to remove are those older than three years old. Those that need pruning are identified by their lack of desired color. Usually this does not include all the stems, but if you have never pruned, it may mean they all must be pruned this spring. Cut as close as possible to the base (crown) of the plant without cutting that base. If you would like to add additional dogwoods to brighten your winter garden, consider adding a redtwig dogwood - Cornus sericea sometimes called C. stolonifera (red stems), yellowtwig dogwood – C. Flaviramea (yellow-green stems), or Tatarian dogwood – C. alba (blood red stems). Follow the same pruning rules for continued winter color as described for the bloodtwig dogwood. Many willows also provide brilliant winter interest with their colorful, curving bare branches.

Samples included mainly European collections, molecular phylogenetics selected GenBank accessions, and specimens of various North American taxa described by Smith (1972) and new taxa deposited at the Herbarium of the University of Michigan (MICH). Three additional taxa from Africa and Central systematics America were also included. Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood analyses of two loci (ITS and Tef-1α) independently taxonomy and together supported the monophyletic nature of the subsectionSpadiceogriseae , and identified nine statistically supported clades within the subsection. North American and European species often fell within the same clade, suggesting a relatively recent origin of the subsection or human induced intercontinental movement. While this study determines for the first time that the presence of a white veil is diagnostic for the entire subsection, very few morphological traits were associated with individual clades, but clades were often distinctively different in terms of habitat association, suggesting that trophic interactions may have driven the evolution of this group of fungi.

Some of these have per- sisted throughout the centuries and are those which refer to the simple colors or ranges such as red or yellow. As the language developed, more and more color names were invented to describe the colors used by art and industry and in late years in the rapidly expanding field of sales promotion. Some of these refer to the pigment or dye used, as Ochre Red or Cochineal, or a geographical location of its source such as Naples Yellow or Byzantium. Later when it became clear that most colors are bought by or for women, many color names indicative of the beauties and wiles of the fan- sex were introduced, as French Nude, Heart’s Desire, Intimate Mood, or Vamp. Fanciful color names came into vogue such as Dream Fluff, Happy Day, Pearly Gates, and Wafted Feather. Do not suppose that these names are without economic importance for a dark reddish gray hat for Milady might be a best seller ; if advertised as Mauve Wine whereas it probably would not if the color were called Paris Mud.

  • Amaranthus Cruentus Red Amaranth
    Amaranthus cruentus L. Red Amaranth (Amaranthus chlorostachys, Amaranthus hybridus subsp. cruentus, Amaranthus paniculatus) • This Central American species is alternately known Achita, African Spinach, Bledo, Blood Amaranth, Bush Greens, Caterpillar Amaranth, Princess Feather; Purple Amaranth, Red Shank, or Sudan Spinach; the moderately coarse textured plants typically mature at 3N to 5N (6N) with a spread of about a quarter to third of the height; leaves vary in color from yellow-green, medium green, dark green, to bronzish green depending upon the cultivar and nutritional status; leaves are simple, nar- rowly to broadly ovate; bases are acute to cuneate with tips acute to acuminate and with wavy mar- gins; the erect flower panicles are 4O to 8O long and fairly dense, varying from creamy white to blood red in color depending upon the cultivar and mature in late spring to summer depending on sowing times and regional conditions. • While this species is grown for agronomic purposes in many regions of the world, ornamental culti- vars are selected for the showy flower and fruit panicles; primary uses are as tall bedding plants to add height to island plantings or mixed boarders, or for cut flowers; the showy panicles can be very striking as cut flowers and are long lasting features as individual panicles go in the garden; after the initial flowering, plants can be deadheaded to encourage return bloom with mixed success. • The most popular of these taxa is 'Autumn Palette' which offers a of long showy panicles in autumn colors ranging from creamy white, buff, peach, deep apricot, to orange-red; 'Marvel Bronze' has wine-red panicles with darker green leaves that are flushed bronze; while touted as disease and pest resistant in many regions, flea beetles may caused severe damage to the foliage; although this is detrimental to its use as a massing or tall bedding plant, the foliar damage usually occurred late enough in the season that the late spring to summer flowers still matured sufficiently for use in fresh cut or dried arrangements.
