Ballistic testing was conducted to estimate the velocity at which 50% of 12-bore lead spherical projectiles (V50) would be expected to perforate this clothing system when mounted on gelatine (a tissue simulant used in wound ballistic studies). An estimated six-shot V50 for the clothing system was calculated as 102 m/s. The distance at which the projectile would have decelerated from the muzzle of the weapon to this velocity in free flight was triple the recognised effective range of weapons of the era suggesting that the clothing system would provide limited protection for the wearer. The estimated V50 was also compared with recorded bounce-and-roll data; this suggested that the clothing system could provide some protection to the wearer from ricochets. Finally, potential wounding behind the clothing system was investigated; the results compared favourably with seventeenth century medical writings. Keywords Leather . Linen . Wool . • Beige Adipose Tissue Activities in Human Obesity
International Journal of Obesity (2015) 39, 1515–1522 © 2015 Macmillan Publishers Limited All rights reserved 0307-0565/15 www.nature.com/ijo ORIGINAL ARTICLE Distinct regulation of hypothalamic and brown/beige adipose tissue activities in human obesity B Rachid1, S van de Sande-Lee1, S Rodovalho1, F Folli2, GC Beltramini3, J Morari1, BJ Amorim4, T Pedro5, AF Ramalho1, B Bombassaro1, AJ Tincani6, E Chaim6, JC Pareja6,7, B Geloneze7, CD Ramos4, F Cendes5, MJA Saad8 and LA Velloso1 BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The identification of brown/beige adipose tissue in adult humans has motivated the search for methods aimed at increasing its thermogenic activity as an approach to treat obesity. In rodents, the brown adipose tissue is under the control of sympathetic signals originating in the hypothalamus. However, the putative connection between the depots of brown/beige adipocytes and the hypothalamus in humans has never been explored. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of the hypothalamus and brown/beige adipose tissue to cold stimulus in obese subjects undergoing body mass reduction following gastric bypass. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We evaluated twelve obese, non-diabetic subjects undergoing Roux-in-Y gastric bypass and 12 lean controls. Obese subjects were evaluated before and approximately 8 months after gastric bypass. Lean subjects were evaluated only at admission. Subjects were evaluated for hypothalamic activity in response to cold by functional magnetic resonance, whereas brown/beige adipose tissue activity was evaluated using a (F 18) fluorodeoxyglucose positron emisson tomography/ computed tomography scan and real-time PCR measurement of signature genes. RESULTS: Body mass reduction resulted in a significant increase in brown/beige adipose tissue activity in response to cold; however, no change in cold-induced hypothalamic activity was observed after body mass reduction.

  • Gamblin Provides Is the Desire to Help Painters Choose the Materials That Best Support Their Own Artistic Intentions
AUGUST 2008 Mineral and Modern Pigments: Painters' Access to Color At the heart of all of the technical information that Gamblin provides is the desire to help painters choose the materials that best support their own artistic intentions. After all, when a painting is complete, all of the intention, thought, and feeling that went into creating the work exist solely in the materials. This issue of Studio Notes looks at Gamblin's organization of their color palette and the division of mineral and modern colors. This visual division of mineral and modern colors is unique in the art material industry, and it gives painters an insight into the makeup of pigments from which these colors are derived, as well as some practical information to help painters create their own personal color palettes. So, without further ado, let's take a look at the Gamblin Artists Grade Color Chart: The Mineral side of the color chart includes those colors made from inorganic pigments from earth and metals. These include earth colors such as Burnt Sienna and Yellow Ochre, as well as those metal-based colors such as Cadmium Yellows and Reds and Cobalt Blue, Green, and Violet. The Modern side of the color chart is comprised of colors made from modern "organic" pigments, which have a molecular structure based on carbon. These include the "tongue- twisting" color names like Quinacridone, Phthalocyanine, and Dioxazine. These two groups of colors have unique mixing characteristics, so this organization helps painters choose an appropriate palette for their artistic intentions. Eras of Pigment History This organization of the Gamblin chart can be broken down a bit further by giving it some historical perspective based on the three main eras of pigment history – Classical, Impressionist, and Modern.
