IQH Second Edition . , . 1922 PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION IT is exceedingly gratifying to me that a second edition of this book should be called for. But still more welcome is the change in the attitude of the educated world towards the old-time alchemists and their theories which has taken place during the past few years. The theory of the origin of Alchemy put forward in I has led to considerable discussion but Chapter ; whilst this theory has met with general acceptance, some of its earlier critics took it as implying far more than is actually the case* As a result of further research my conviction of its truth has become more fully confirmed, and in my recent work entitled " Bygone Beliefs (Rider, 1920), under the title of The Quest of the Philosophers Stone," I have found it possible to adduce further evidence in this connec tion. At the same time, whilst I became increasingly convinced that the main alchemistic hypotheses were drawn from the domain of mystical theology and applied to physics and chemistry by way of analogy, it also became evident to me that the crude physiology of bygone ages and remnants of the old phallic faith formed a further and subsidiary source of alchemistic theory.

MY REVERED TEACHER AND FRIEND I DEDICATE THIS BOOK IN WHICH HE WAS DEEPLY INTERESTED J.K. INTRODUCTORY. HEN in the period of the Renaissance, men's m i n d s W were waking from the long sleep of mediaeval darkness, SOLOMON TRISMOSIN, one of the less known Adepts of Alchemy, went forth in search of that secret knowledge, the possession of which leads to Alchemical Adeptship. His romantic Wanderings in Quest of the Philosopher's Stone, he has himself described, and if he declares to have reached that Eldorado of Hermetic Knowledge wherein is found the prized Philosopher's Stone, although we may feel inclined to doubt his word, we are, nevertheless not in a position to entirely dispute his statement. For since the discovery of radioactive substances chemical theory has vastly changed. The very Elementality of the chemical Elements is questioned, and the alchemical idea, that Metals can be decomposed into three ultimate principles : SALT, MERCURY, and SULPHUR, may not be so absurd after all.

It contains an entire section on ‘astronomy’, which is one of the keys to wisdom and perfection.

Chymists and Chymistry: Studies in the History of Alchemy and Early Modern Chemistry edited by Lawrence M. Principe Sagamore Beach, MA: Chemical Heritage Foundation/Science History Publications, 2007. Pp. xiv + 274. ISBN 978--0--88135--396--9.Cloth $45.00 Reviewed by Jole Shackelford University of Minnesota [email protected] The editor of this volume of 22 contributions to a conference held at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia on 19 July 2006 invokes in his introduction the memory of an earlier conference, con- vened in Groningen 17 years prior. He credits that conference with catalyzing a collaboration and informal networking among historians interested in alchemy that led to an efflorescence of alchemical stud- ies and precipitated a need for a new conference to ascertain where the field has gone and to rally a second generation of enthusiasts. I was among those at the 1989 Groningen conference and remember clearly that it commenced with a kind of anti-benediction presented by Nathan Sivin, who proceeded to tell us that the history of alchemy was a dead or dying field, that the few who continued to work in the subject area came to it from other disciplines, not the history of sci- ence, and that until specialists in chemistry, religion, and other dis- ciplines took off their blinders and worked together, combining their viewpoints, the field would not again generate new knowledge. And behold, this is what has happened! The chapters of this collection reflect both existing lines of research and those newly undertaken, in many cases in the spirit of collegiality that Sivin hoped that the Groningen conference had conjured.

Of the Work 3 4 INTRODUCTION DR. SIGISMOND BACSTROM, M.D., flourished towards the latter part of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries. He was, evidently, of Scandinavian origin, judging by his name, and certainly, for a part of his life, he was a ship’s surgeon. As some doubt is cast upon this fact by A.E. Waite in The Brotherhood of the Rosy Cross, the following extract will confirm it. In a publication entitled Voyages and Travels, in all Parts of the World, by John Pinkerton, Vol. 1, 1803. Published: Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, Paternoster Row, there appears: “An account of a voyage to Spitzbergen in the year 1780, by S. Bacstrom, M.D., communicated by the author to the editor of the Philosophical Magazine, July 1799. “Such has been my passion to visit foreign climes, that I have been no less then fifteen voyages, one of them round the world. “I engaged myself as surgeon on board the Rising Sun, William Souter, Master --- a well appointed stout ship of 400 tons burthen”. None of Bacstrom’s alchemical works was ever published by himself, although H.P.
