ART & DESIGN VISITS

Street Art Walking Tours Looking closely on the walls, streets, doors of it is easy to see that this Mediterranean city is one big contemporary art gallery…. if you know where to look. These 2 street tours will take students in and out of the city’s streets and alleys of the various districts of this grand city in where they will be informed about the emerging street art/ graffiti movement in Barcelona and get up close to some of the best art in the city. Gothic /El Bourne Street Art Tour: Exploring Barcelona's historically rich neighbourhoods highlighting the signature brand of street art and the most impressive creative pieces. ( 2 hours) Metro: The Raval Adventure: Venture through the mysterious Raval District and the neighbouring L'Eixample district bringing students up close to grand scale murals and the newest & contemporary street art in the city. Picasso Museum Containing one of the largest collections of arguably the greatest painter of all time, the Picasso museum exhibits the genius of the young artist through more than 3,800 works that make up the permanent collection. Furthermore, the , opened in 1963, also reveals his deep relationship with Barcelona: an intimate, solid relationship that was shaped in his adolescence and youth, and continued until his death. The Joan Miro Foundation Barcelona's Joan Miró Foundation was one of the first contemporary art museums in and through the pieces and educational outlets on offer; students are able to learn a wide range of interesting information about Miró and his incredible work. Park Güell The park contains amazing stone structures, stunning tiling and fascinating buildings displaying the works of Antoni Gaudi. At the top of Güell park is a terraced area where you get a wonderful view of the park and the whole Barcelona City. A star attraction of the area exhibiting Gaudi’s work and concepts. For free entrance, schools must book this visit directly.

Metro: The closest station is Lesseps

Sagrada Familia La Sagrada Familia is one of Gaudi's most famous masterpieces in Barcelona. It's a giant Basilica that has been under construction since 1882 and is not expected to be completed until 2026! The building is in the centre of Barcelona, and over the years it has become one of the most universal signs of identity of the city and the country, amazing and inspiring students. Please note the general entrance fee does not include access to the tower, please ask us for more details.

Casa Batlló Casa Batlló is one of Antoni Gaudi’s masterpieces. Hidden behind the exceptional modernista façade is refined architectural details and the insight of an artistic legend. This building is a stunning and original sight and well worth the visit.

Metro: The closest metro station is Passeig de Gràcia (Calle Aragó-Rambla Catalunya exit). Casa Batlló is only 30 seconds walk from the metro stop IF you take the correct metro exit. Look for the exit called: Calle Aragó-Rambla Catalunya when you are leaving the metro) Website: www.casabatllo.es

Casa Mila - La Pedrera Please note that throughout 2014 La Pedrera is undergoing restoration from the outside so the external view will be limited. Exhibitions will still continue inside. La Pedrera is the largest civil building designed by Antoni Gaudi. The apartment block was constructed between 1906 and 1910 and was in fact Gaudi's last work before devoting himself to the construction of the Sagrada Familia. A piece of art that flows onto the street, La Pedrera instantly parades Gaudi’s quirky and innovative designs, stirring student’s ideas and thoughts.

Museu d'Art Contemporani (MACBA) The vast, white Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona is a temple to contemporary art. Artists frequently on show include Antoni Tàpies, Miquel Barceló and a host of ‘very now’ installation artists. Several temporary exhibitions are always going on at once in this busy gallery, the most important of its kind in the city, making it a must see for art students.

Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) A vast collection of Catalan art from Romanesque, Gothic through to Renaissance and Modern Art, Highlights include Diego Velázquez, El Greco, Rubens, Picasso, Gaudi and Dali. Closed on Mondays

Fundació Antoni Tàpies The Fundació was created in 1984 by the artist Antoni Tàpies to promote the study and knowledge of modern and contemporary art. The museum combines the organisation of temporary exhibitions, lectures and film seasons to contribute in a better understanding of contemporary art and culture for students. With fantastic space and exhibitions, the architecture alone remains one of the earliest examples of Modernism to combine exposed brick and iron. Closed on Mondays

'Walking with Gaudi': Gaudi Exhibition Centre -NEW The Gaudí Exhibition Center is a new exhibition space in the city centre housing 'Walking with Gaudí', an extraordinary exhibition concerning the work and personality of Antoni Gaudí. A unique collection of the great architect’s works, objects and documents representing almost a century of international research into Gaudí. The Center has a series of technological installations that stimulate the mind giving visitors an innovative, virtual reality experience using augmented reality. This journey into Gaudi´s exceptional mind, gives an insight into his vision and his interpretation, made reality in his architectural and design work.

The Gaudi Experience This is a unique 4D experience located 5 minutes from Parc Güell. Visitors will take an interactive journey through the creative universe of Antoni Gaudi. Along with the 4D experience, you can also spend time in the interactive exhibition to discover how nature inspired his creations.

Dali Theatre Museum – Figueres This well known museum and final resting place of Salvador Dali contains the widest range of Dali’s work. It contains a wide array of work from his career, astounding students with painting, sculptures, furniture and 3-D collages. Closed on Mondays

Location: The Dalí Museum is located in Figures which is approx. 2 hours driver from Barcelona. A visit to this Museum will be arranged including coach hire. Website: www.salvador-dali.org

Dali Museums

If you wish to study Dali’s work in more detail you can visit the Gala Dali House in Pubol and Dali’s House in Portlligat where you will gain a greater insight into how he lived and worked. Both museums are located in the same region as Figueres and all 3 museums can be covered in a full day coach excursion. Ask us for more details.

CULTURAL BARCELONA

Everybody who visits Catalonia will spend at least one day in Barcelona. Vibrant and cosmopolitan, you have so many opportunities here to soak up Spanish Culture

Las Ramblas Enjoy wandering along this famous street that runs through the heart of the city. Take in the street artists, market stall, shops and cafes.

Las Ramblas Treasure Hunt & Coastal Town Trails A great way for your students to some free time whilst exploring the Las Ramblas area. Our exclusive, free 90 minute Treasure Hunt along Las Ramblas encourages groups to interact with the street, take photos and have fun together. We also have free town trails for a number of resorts along the Catalonia coast.

Plaza Cataluyna Located at the top of Las Ramblas this is the main hub of the city and packed with shops, department stores and cafes.

Nou Camp The world famous football stadium, home to Barcelona FC. With the ‘ Experience’ you will see their trophies on display and learn more about the values, heritage and history of the club. There’s a great new multimedia area with interactive screens and tables and you can even walk through the player’s tunnel. Audio tours only are available here. Montjuic Rising up from the harbour area Montjuic offers superb views of the city. The site of much regeneration for the 1992 Olympics, Montjuic offers a range of visits

including the Olympic Stadium, (Spanish Village), museums, funicular railway and parks and gardens. Metro: Plaza Espana - From here you can walk along the magic fountain route and go past the Museum Nacional de Arte de Catalunya Parallel - From here change to the cable car or walk. Port Vell Located on the harbour this is a recently developed area of Barcelona, with a great range of shops, museums and tapas restaurants. You’ll also find the IMAX Cinema and the Aquarium here.

CULTURAL COASTAL

You will find a more relaxed atmosphere along the coast with great opportunities to dip into the history and heritage of the region

Girona This beautiful medieval town is great to wander around to soak up the culture, with its old buildings, narrow streets, and gothic cathedral.

Tossa An authentic Spanish seaside town, picturesque location, great to wander around the cobbled streets, pick up souvenirs or walk around the old walled town and up to the lighthouse.

Montserrat Located inland from the Costa Dorada Montserrat is a religious site famous as home to the Statue of the Black Madonna. Visit around mid-day and you can experience a performance from the world famous boys choir in the Cathedral and take in spectacular views.

Tarragona A historic roman town where you can view a series of ruins including the amphitheatre and the ‘devils bridge’ aqueduct.

LEISURE

Shopping in Port Vell or Plaza Cataluyna Shops in Spain are open until late and both these areas are well populated with department stores, high street fashion as well the usual souvenir shops.

The Magic Fountain of Montjuic An evening highlight in Barcelona, this is a fantastic display of light, colour and water acrobatics. Displays are usually at weekends only and at various times in the evening dependent on the season. Please contact us for times.

PORT AVENTURA CARIBE AQUAPARK, SALOU Situated within Port Aventura World this water park has a wide range of slides, pools, restaurants and shops. Highlights include King Kajhuna a 31 metre free fall slide (the highest water slide in Europe) and Ciclon Tropical, a multi bump slide of over 100 metres.

WATERWORLD, LLORET DE MAR Located on the Costa Brava, this is one of the best water parks in Spain. You’ll enjoy breathtaking slides, rapids, lagoons and wave pools. Highlights include X Treme Mountain, a 260 ft long ‘water coaster’ and Storm, a new concept of a whirlpool vortex.
