It must also be said however that all too often the Games are seen as a mere instrument, an event which enabled the city to expand its tourist capacity, a media event which placed Barcelona on the map and led to it becoming one of Europe’s, and therefore the world’s, main tourist destinations , as it is now, ten years later.

FOLLOWING THE FOOTPRINTS OF COLONIAL BARCELONA Gustau Nerín It is hardly unusual to find people, even highly educated people, who claim Catalonia can analyse colonialism with sufficient objectivity given that it has never taken part in any colonial campaign and never been colonialist. Even though most historians do not subscribe to this view, it is certainly a common belief among ordinary people. Dissociating ourselves from colonialism is obviously a way of whitewashing our history and collective conscience. But Barcelona, like it or not, is a city that owes a considerable amount of its growth to its colonial experience. First, it is obvious that the whole of Europe was infected with colonial attitudes at the height of the colonial period, towards the end of the 19th century and first half of the 20th. Colonial beliefs were shared among the English, French, Portuguese and Belgians, as well as the Swedes, Swiss, Italians, Germans and Catalans. Colonialist culture was constantly being consumed in Barcelona as in the rest of Europe. People were reading Jules Verne’s and Emilio Salgari's novels, collecting money for the “poor coloured folk” at missions in China and Africa and raising their own children with the racist poems of Kipling. The film industry, that great propagator of colonial myths, inflamed passions in our city with Tarzan, Beau Geste and The Four Feathers. Barcelona’s citizens certainly shared this belief in European superiority and in the white man’s burden, with Parisians, Londoners and so many other Europeans. In fact, even the comic strip El Capitán Trueno, which was created by a communist Catalan, Víctor Mora, proved to be a perfect reflection of these colonial stereotypes.

In this study, we evaluate the effects of creating 18 green spaces in socially vulnerable neighborhoods of Barcelona during the 1990s and early 2000s. Combining OLS and GWR analysis together with a spatial descriptive analysis, we examined the evolution over time of six socio-demographic gentrification indicators in the areas in proximity to green spaces in comparison with the entire district. Our results indicate that parks built in parts of the old town and in formerly industrialized neighborhoods of Barcelona seem to have experienced green gentrification trends. In contrast, most economically depressed areas and working class neighborhoods with less desirable housing stock that are more isolated from the city center gained vulnerable residents as they became greener, indicating a possible redistribution and higher concentration of vulnerable residents through the city as neighborhoods undergo processes of urban (re)development.

Over the last decade the capital of Catalonia has been the star of European urban tourism, as visitor figures have doubled. With the impetus from the 1992 Olympic Games it entered the world club of cities and became a global reference for international urban tourism. With sixteen million overnight stays per year and around seven million tourists a year, Barcelona has been the great ‘discovery’ for holiday tourism in recent years. This is an acknowledgement that now complements the traditional activity of business tourism in the city, which itself continues to grow in size and prestige. The Catalan capital has emerged as a major tourism destination. People from around the world choose it for their holidays and weekend breaks, due to its unique characteristics, as it brings together an intense and varied number of enticements and attractions in a city of human dimensions.

Analyzing Last Mile Delivery Operations in Barcelona’s Urban Freight Transport Network Burcu Kolbay1, Petar Mrazovic2, and Josep Llus Larriba-Pey1 1 DAMA-UPC Data Management, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya C/Jordi Girona, 1 3 UPC Campus Nord 08034 Barcelona, Spain {burcu, larri}@ac.upc.edu http://www.dama.upc.edu/en 2 Dept. of Software and Computer Systems, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden [email protected] http://www.kth.se Abstract. Barcelona has recently started a new strategy to control and understand Last Mile Delivery, AreaDUM. The strategy is to provide freight delivery vehicle drivers with a mobile app that has to be used every time their vehicle is parked in one of the designated AreaDUM surface parking spaces in the streets of the city. This provides a significant amount of data about the activity of the freight delivery vehicles, their patterns, the occupancy of the spaces, etc. In this paper, we provide a preliminary set of analytics preceded by the procedures employed for the cleansing of the dataset. During the analysis we show that some data blur the results and using a simple strategy to detect when a vehicle parks repeatedly in close-by parking slots, we are able to obtain different, yet more reliable results. In our paper, we show that this behavior is common among users with 80% prevalence. We conclude that we need to analyse and understand the user behaviors further with the purpose of providing predictive algorithms to find parking lots and smart routing algorithms to minimize traffic. Keywords: Urban Freight, Clustering, Partitioning Around Medoids, User Behavior, Smart City, AreaDUM 1 Introduction Barcelona is considered to be among the smartest cities in the planet.
