Quaintseeker: Quedlinburg, Germany "Quaintseeker: Quedlinburg, Germany" Quedlinburg is a medieval settlement with origins that can be traced back to the 9th Century. In 936, King Otto I of the Holy Roman Empire established an abbey for secular canonesses at the behest of his mother, Queen Mathilda, in honor of his father, King Henry the Fowler. It is here that the Annals of Quedlinburg originated. Although dissolved in 1803, the abbey remains one of the town's most popular attractions. In the old town of Quedlinburg you will encounter numerous half-timbered houses depicting varying architectural styles, forming a kind of historic architectural chronicle. The old town and its many attractions have been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and also features on the route of the scenic Romanesque Road. The abbey was constructed by their son, King Otto I, and served as an abode for the secular canonesses. By virtue of its status as an imperial abbey, the Quedlinburg Abbey and its abbess received bountiful grants and enjoyed by HasBS freedom from the control of the Bishop of Halberstadt, answering only to the Pope himself. The abbey continued to thrive until 1803 when it was finally dissolved and its holdings were absorbed into secular use. The abbey church of St. Servatius still stands and is a popular tourist attraction. The graves of Saint Mathilda and King Henry the Fowler can be found here. The abbey is also renowned as the site of origin of the Annals of Quedlinburg, chronicling the political history of the Holy Roman Empire. +49 3946 90 5624 (Tourist [email protected] Schloßberg 1, Quedlinburg Information) Stiftskirche St. Servatius "Quedlinburg's Landmark" Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, the Stiftskirche St. Servatius is a popular destination in Quedlinburg. From 1711, St. Blasii was completely rebuilt in the Baroque by Feldstein style; only the medieval tower and choir remained. The nave was shaped like an elongated octagon. The essay deals with an aspect of these poems, which I has not, so far as know, been treated systematically by- anyone who has previously written on the subject. Thus, in the absence of any model, I have had to work on independent lines, especially as regards the grouping and arrangement of different traditions, and the method of discussion followed in the several chapters. The actual arrangement has been adopted for convenience of discus sion, according to the nationality of the persons concerned, except in cases where a particular section forms a complete epic narrative with a personal (as opposed to a national) interest of its own: in these cases the tradition has been discussed under the heading of the poem in which it is contained, or that of the character round whom the narrative centres.

  • Exploring Representations of Early Modern German Women Book Collectors (1650-1780)
CURATING THE COLLECTOR: EXPLORING REPRESENTATIONS OF EARLY MODERN GERMAN WOMEN BOOK COLLECTORS (1650-1780) BY KATHLEEN MARIE SMITH DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in German in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Mara R. Wade, Chair Associate Professor Laurie Johnson Associate Professor Stephanie Hilger Professor Carl Niekerk Professor Tom D. Kilton, Emeritus ABSTRACT This dissertation examines representations of book collecting by German women in the early modern period in order to explore the role of gender in this activity. Portrayals of book collectors in the modern and early modern eras offer examples of how this identity is constructed, particularly in the underlying assumptions and expectations that determine who is defined as a book collector and what criteria are used to shape that decision. In the case of four early modern women--Elisabeth Sophie Marie of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1683-1767); Elisabeth Ernestine Antonie of Sachsen-Meiningen (1681-1766); Caroline of Ansbach (1683- 1737); and Wilhelmine of Bayreuth (1709-1758)--the act of collecting is depicted as essential to their social status and an integral part of their lives. Finally, in an in-depth case study of an early modern German woman who was a book collector, Sophie of Hanover (1630-1714), this study analyzes how she represented her collecting activities and textual interaction as well as how she is represented in other texts. The way in which these early modern German women were represented and represented themselves as collectors reveals a great deal about the position of women within wider networks concerning the exchange of texts and information.

  • Lithuania and Poland in the Last Millennium: Between the Margins and the Heart of Europe
© Richard Butterwick-Pawlikowski 2015 Richard Butterwick-Pawlikowski (College of Europe, Natolin) Lecture delivered on 17 September 2015 to the conference: The Dynamics of Lithuanian-Polish Relations: Cooperation in the EU, held at Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas, Lithuania. LITHUANIA AND POLAND IN THE LAST MILLENNIUM: BETWEEN THE MARGINS AND THE HEART OF EUROPE Twenty-six kilometres north of Vilnius lies the geographical centre of Europe. Twenty-six years ago, its location was calculated by the French Institut Géographique National – at a time when the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic still existed. Perhaps, in that year of 1989, when about two million Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians linked hands to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Nazi- Soviet pact on 23 August, the centre of Europe was also its heart. As the organ which pumps blood through the human body, the heart is admittedly, somewhat off-centre. As a metaphor for the feelings, it has no fixed abode. The poetic concept of the Heart of Europe was claimed for Poland by the nineteenth-century bard Juliusz Słowacki and seconded by the historian Norman Davies.1 And perhaps, on 4 June 1989 the heart of Europe was in Poland, when partially free elections saw Solidarność crush the Polish United Workers’ Party and its allies. The very same day, the Chinese Communist Party crushed pro-democracy demonstrators on Tiananmen Square.
