A half-century later, the mother of all music festivals still resonates ifty years after the fact, it still resonates with us. Tucked up in the Catskill Mountains, the Woodstock Music & Art Fair — promoted as “An Aquarian Exposition, Three Days of Peace and Music,” but known to one and all as simply Woodstock — took place in 1969 over three-plus days. From Friday, Aug. 15, through the morning of Monday, Aug. 18, dairy farmer Max Yasgur’s 600- acre parcel of land in Bethel, New York — forever immortalized in Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” (ironically, she wasn’t at the event itself) — became the epicenter of the music and cultural universe, a haven for 400,000-plus hippies, bohemians, music lovers and mem- bers of the counterculture. It began when folkie Richie Havens began strumming his gui- tar, kicking off the festival with Paul Gerry/Bethel Woods Collection “From the Prison.” Thirty-two more acts, about 66 hours and several rainstorms later, it ended when guitar god Jimi Hendrix capped off a stellar set with his rendition of “Hey Joe.” Thousands of cars were left stranded for miles and miles en route to the venue as concertgo- ers walked to their destination. Tickets for the festival were $18, but many attendees got in for free when the crowd more than tripled what organizers had anticipated. Dallas Taylor, the drummer for supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (playing just its second-ever show), asked the helicopter pilot James Sarles/Bethel Woods Collection James Sarles/Bethel Woods Collection flying him to the event what body of More than 400,000 people descended on a dairy farm in Bethel, N.Y., for the concert held 50 years ago.

  • 1 MYNAH BIRDS by Nick Warburton Ambitious
MYNAH BIRDS By Nick Warburton Ambitious, charismatic and dripping in raw talent, Ricky James Matthews (b. James Ambrose Johnson, 1 February 1948, Buffalo, NY, US; d. 6 August 2004) didn’t take long to capitalise on his sharp looks, soulful voice and US navy uniform after he landed in Toronto in August 1964. Within weeks of his arrival, the young singer found himself fronting the aptly titled Sailorboys, a raucous R&B outfit that subsequently evolved into the Mynah Birds. Unbeknown to his musical cohorts, however, Matthews was a wanted man by the US authorities. His failure to report for active duty with the USS Enterprise and a fear of arrest had prompted the young singer to flee across the border. Interestingly, it was not Matthews’ first brush with the authorities, for as a teenager he had been arrested on several occasions for stealing cars. Indeed, throughout his career Matthews would have numerous run-ins with the law, culminating in a prison sentence in the mid- 1990s. While Matthews later enjoyed a string of hits for Motown Records in the late 1970s/early 1980s as funk star Rick James, little is known about his early life, particularly his involvement in the Toronto rock scene during the 1960s. And perhaps it would have remained that way had it not been for the fact that the Mynah Birds also briefly included Canadian rock legend, Neil Young (b. 12 November 1945, Toronto, Canada). Even so, it would be a gross oversight to view the group as merely a footnote to Rick James and Neil Young’s careers.

    • Allegories of Globalization: The United States in Recent Latin American Narrative Alex Conrad Holland Columbus, Georgia MHS, Auburn University, 2003 BA, Columbus State University, 1997 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese University of Virginia May 2011 Directed by Donald Shaw i ABSTRACT This study examines the interplay of Latin American and North American culture in four novels by established Spanish American authors. Luisa Valenzuela’s Novela negra con argentinos (1990), El plan infinito by Isabel Allende (1991), Linda 67: Historia de un crimen (1995) by Fernando del Paso and José Donoso’s Donde van a morir los elefantes (1995) are each set in the United States of the late 1980s and 1990s. Though all of these novels are purportedly focused on individual relationships, pedaling around the theories of Fredric Jameson and Dorris Sommer I argue that these private romances are also figures for public, trans-national allegories. The love triangles always involve the choice, on the part of the Latin American protagonist, between a fellow Latin American and a North American partner who embodies the highlighted aspects of the surrounding culture. Given the timing of the production of these novels, with the centered promoters of globalization pushing the formation of a new world order in which the nation-state would play a significantly reduced role, these novels provide a counterpoint from the peripheral perspective and reveal the tensions and anxieties involved in integrating the global and the local without the mediation of the national level.
