Children, what's that sound? Buffalo Springfield reunited By Marco R. della Cava, USA Today, 10/25 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Wow, man. There's tie-dyed Woodstock emcee Wavy Gravy getting wanded by security. Backstage, check out psychedelic album-art maestro Stanley Mouse, sketching up a storm. On stage? How about Buffalo Springfield, ripping through nearly a dozen of the band's hits? Who says you can't go back? Saturday's '60s throwback came courtesy of Neil and Pegi Young's 24th annual benefit concert to support the Bridge School, which educates 1 / 7 Children, what's that sound? Buffalo Springfield reunited children with severe impairments. Although the lineup for the all-acoustic, eight-hour affair was typically eclectic, the undeniable focus was on Young's first public reunion with remaining original members of his old band, formed with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay in the musical cauldron of 1966 and disbanded two years later. Springboard to fame The surviving trio did their late bandmates, Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin, proud. Opening with a slightly slowed version of the Furay-led On the Way Home, Stills and Young dutifully fell into supporting roles on harmony. 2 / 7 Children, what's that sound? Buffalo Springfield reunited Furay, dressed in a black cowboy shirt, stayed in the spotlight with A Child's Claim to Fame, Do I Have to Come Right Out and Say It and Kind Woman. But the men flanking him would soon show their stuff, making it instantly clear why Springfield was fated to be a passing phenomenon.

  • 1 MYNAH BIRDS by Nick Warburton Ambitious
MYNAH BIRDS By Nick Warburton Ambitious, charismatic and dripping in raw talent, Ricky James Matthews (b. James Ambrose Johnson, 1 February 1948, Buffalo, NY, US; d. 6 August 2004) didn’t take long to capitalise on his sharp looks, soulful voice and US navy uniform after he landed in Toronto in August 1964. Within weeks of his arrival, the young singer found himself fronting the aptly titled Sailorboys, a raucous R&B outfit that subsequently evolved into the Mynah Birds. Unbeknown to his musical cohorts, however, Matthews was a wanted man by the US authorities. His failure to report for active duty with the USS Enterprise and a fear of arrest had prompted the young singer to flee across the border. Interestingly, it was not Matthews’ first brush with the authorities, for as a teenager he had been arrested on several occasions for stealing cars. Indeed, throughout his career Matthews would have numerous run-ins with the law, culminating in a prison sentence in the mid- 1990s. While Matthews later enjoyed a string of hits for Motown Records in the late 1970s/early 1980s as funk star Rick James, little is known about his early life, particularly his involvement in the Toronto rock scene during the 1960s. And perhaps it would have remained that way had it not been for the fact that the Mynah Birds also briefly included Canadian rock legend, Neil Young (b. 12 November 1945, Toronto, Canada). Even so, it would be a gross oversight to view the group as merely a footnote to Rick James and Neil Young’s careers.

NEIL YOUNG AN ESOTERIC PROFILE BY FREDERIC SIMON November 2013 1970 2012 1 “As I get older, I get smaller. I see other parts of the world I didn't see before. Other points of view. I see outside myself more." Waving Heavy Peace, Neil Young’s autobiography 1. Biography of Neil Young. Before reading about the extremely rich life of Neil Young, I invite readers to watch websites of other great singers - of the same generation and importance, and view Young's official website: Bob Dylan Bruce Springsteen Mick Jagger Elton John Neil Young's official website It is surprising that, unlike other musicians, there is nothing about his music, his last record, or concert, on his site. It seems more like the site of an environmental activist! For me, it shows the great originality of this artist who cannot be confined to any one category. The young years Neil Percival Young is born the 12 November 1945 in Toronto, Canada. His father was a journalist and writer. As a young boy he had bad health - polio at the age of five, epileptic seizures and spinal deformity. After his parent’s divorce, he moved with his mother to Winnipeg. As a teenager, he learnt to play the guitar and soon began writing songs. In Junior High School, he began to play with local bands and record songs that are stored in The Neil Young Archives. On the road To live out his passion, he leaves Canada for the United States in 1966, with bassist Bruce Palmer, heading for Los Angeles in a black hearse.

In particular, I will fondly remember the late Dr. Jerry Prescott who stimulated my love for western history and Dr. Roger McGrath who continues to ride the waves of our state’s past for any student fortunate enough to learn from him. More recently, I would like to extend my deepest respect and gratitude to Dr. Joyce Broussard whose passion for southern history exposed me to the courageous figures of Natchez Mississippi. With respect to my committee, I would like to thank Dr. Susan Fitzpatrick-Behrens whose class on Latin American History of MacArthur Park set me upon the path to Spatial Empowerment theory. Her patience and support with my documentary project helped me realize another journey I may pursue. In addition, I am very much delighted to have had the insight and wisdom of Dr. Josh Sides, my thesis chair, whose enthusiasm for our region’s history is contagious.
