COMMENTARY 1-20 Calchas on the basis of an omen declares that Troy must be taken by trickery. It is easy to assert 1 that Q. has combined the traditional detail2 of Odysseus' device ofthe Horse with Sinon's claim in Virg. A. 2. 185f. that Calchas 'ordered' the Greeks to build it. Even if the detail is Virg. 's own 3, in Q. Calchas' intervention is grounded in reality, is based on a wholly dif ferent set of circumstances, is strategically necessary (an effective method of crushing the stiff opposition put up by the god-fearing Neoptolemos, a motif certainly not of Q. 's own devising: 66-103n. ), and must be viewed against the background of a tradition in which oracles, prophecies and portents abound4 , and in which Calchas came to assume an increasingly dominant role 5 • Q. 's Calchas indeed (for his teaming up with Odysseus cf. the n. on 360-88, § 4 (a) (ii)) is a leading light in decision making both before and after the fall of Troy6 • His Trojan counterpart Helenos, so popular elsewhere, is virtually driven out of the action: he is a fighter viii. 252f., xi. 348f.; a seer, though not explicitly so, only in the chaotic prophecy of Hera at x. 346f. Calchas is on the scene at this point in the saga in Dictys 5. 7: he predicts that Troy will fall into Greek hands on the basis of an omen involving an eagle carrying a victim's entrails. The doubly inept Triph. 172f. is worth a passing glance: the 'aged' Calchas is in the Horse, and in his capacity as a seer he is well aware ( EU Elow~) that the Greeks were at long last going to take Troy.-Triph. -

Hesiod (8th or 7th c. BC, composed in Greek) The Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, are probably slightly earlier than Hesiod’s two surviving poems, the Works and Days and the Theogony. Yet in many ways Hesiod is the more important author for the study of Greek mythology. While Homer treats cer- tain aspects of the saga of the Trojan War, he makes no attempt at treating myth more generally. He often includes short digressions and tantalizes us with hints of a broader tra- dition, but much of this remains obscure. Hesiod, by contrast, sought in his Theogony to give a connected account of the creation of the universe. For the study of myth he is im- portant precisely because his is the oldest surviving attempt to treat systematically the mythical tradition from the first gods down to the great heroes. Also unlike the legendary Homer, Hesiod is for us an historical figure and a real per- sonality. His Works and Days contains a great deal of autobiographical information, in- cluding his birthplace (Ascra in Boiotia), where his father had come from (Cyme in Asia Minor), and the name of his brother (Perses), with whom he had a dispute that was the inspiration for composing the Works and Days. His exact date cannot be determined with precision, but there is general agreement that he lived in the 8th century or perhaps the early 7th century BC. His life, therefore, was approximately contemporaneous with the beginning of alphabetic writing in the Greek world. Although we do not know whether Hesiod himself employed this new invention in composing his poems, we can be certain that it was soon used to record and pass them on. -

How to convey the matters of war and peace, of strategy and humanity found in Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey to Aristotle’s pupil Alexander. Homer’s face and sightless eyes give no clue. Aristotle’s gaze is off into space. His right hand to Homer’s head; his left hand fingers the chain that carries a pendant engraved with the head of Alexander the Great, whose expression we cannot make out. We can imagine the thoughts and words of Homer running like an electric current up to and through the mind of Aristotle, then down and on into the mind and actions of the conqueror of the world. Sometime around the year 345 Aristotle moved to the island of Mytilene where he did biological observation. Then in 343 came the invitation for which he ever after was famed: to come to the court of King Philip II of Macedonia to tutor his son Alexander, who was then thirteen years of age. As one historian put it: A rich romance came to surround that happy coupling of prince and philosopher, and we shall not hope to see through the fog of legend or determine how far Aristotle influenced his ambitious and unlovely charge –– the boy who would become Alexander the Great and rule the world from the Peloponnesus to Persia to the Punjab. So Aristotle was given the opportunity in actuality that Plato only longed for in theory –– to educate a philosopher-king. -

In Greek mythology, the Trojan War was waged against the city of Troy by the Achaeans (Greeks) after Paris of Troy took Helen Trojan War from her husband Menelaus king of Sparta. The war is one of the most important events in Greek mythology and has been narrated through many works of Greek literature, most notably through Homer's Iliad. The Iliad relates a part of the last year of the siege of Troy; its sequel, the Odyssey describes Odysseus's journey home. Other parts of the war are described in a cycle of epic poems, which have survived through fragments. Episodes from the war provided material for Greek tragedy and other works of Greek literature, and for Roman poets including Virgil and Ovid. The war originated from a quarrel between the goddesses Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite, after Eris, the goddess of strife and discord, gave them a golden apple, sometimes known as the Apple of Discord, marked "for the fairest". Zeus sent the goddesses to Paris, who judged that Aphrodite, as the "fairest", should receive the apple. In exchange, Aphrodite made Helen, the most beautiful Achilles tending the wounded Patroclus of all women and wife of Menelaus, fall in love with Paris, who (Attic red-figure kylix, c. 500 BC) took her to Troy. The wedding is described by the Greek playwright, Euripides, in “Iphigenia at Aulis” and by the Latin poet, Catullus in poem 64. Discordia [Greek, Ερισ] The goddess of discord and the personification of strife, Discord was the only immortal not invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. Angered, she threw out a golden apple inscribed with the words, “For the Fairest.” Three goddesses, Hera (Juno), Aphrodite (Venus), and Athena (Minerva), immediately begin to quarrel over the apple. Jupiter handed the decision over to the Trojan, Paris, who awards the apple to Aphrodite. THE INTERPRETATION OF THEBAN MYTHS IN LATE MEDIAEVAL LITERATURE David Anderson For Richard Hamilton Green The modern term "classical myth" covers a range of legendary subjects which mediaeval writers commonly distinguished as tabula or historia; or, with the addition of a third term, as 1) things which could have happened and did happen (historia); 2) things which could have happened but did not (argumentum) ; and 3) things which could not have happened and did not happen, such as the preposterous high jinks of the pagan gods (fabula).* Though the mediaeval Latin word historia and the derivative loan-words in vernacular languages, such as Middle English "storie," do not correspond exactly to the meaning of Modern English "history," they stood always and clearly in contrast to fabula, which denoted a lie, a falsehood. By the fourteenth century, writers were using this pair of terms with the informality accorded an unquestioned convention. In one well-known example, Chaucer's Physician remarks that the tale of Appius and Virginia "is no fable, / but knowen for historial thyng notable" (154-55); and in another, Boccaccio distinguishes the fabulous from the historical characters and events in Vergil's Aeneid, book 4 (Genealogie 14.13). Accounts of the "myths" of the ancient cities of Thebes and Troy often focussed on the question of fabulous and historical elements in the received sources: Guido delle Colonne, for one, sets it as his task to "separate the true from the false among the things which were written of [Trojan] history in Latin 2 books," an assertion which John Lydgate translates and expands in the prologue to his Troy Book. -

Eris Goddess of Discord © Emmanuella Kozas Image used with permission from the artist Eris is the Greek Goddess of Chaos and Discord, and, in the confusion that surrounds Her origins, She certainly live up to the name. She is referred to either a minor spirit, or eldest daughter of Nyx (Night) and Zeus, or daughter of Zeus and Hera and twin to Ares. She is depicted as a beautiful young woman, a skeletal crone or winged daemon. Hesiod describes two Goddesses who go by the name Eris, the Erites. The first is a benign Goddess who promotes healthy competition, and can be a catalyst for bettering oneself. This "Good Eris" provides the incentive for individuals to create the change they want to see in themselves. It is Eris who gives us the proverbial "kick in the butt" we all require, at times, when we become lethargic, complacent or prone to procrastination. The second Eris is the one we are most familiar with. As the daughter of Hera and Zeus, and companion to Ares, She fosters evil, war and cruelty. Her epithets include Infernal Monster, Lady of Sorrows and Nurse of War. The poet Virgil writes that Eris lives in a cavern, surrounded by mountains, at the entrance to Hades. Eris begins as a small and insignificant Spirit who thrives on Chaos, striding through battlefields growing stronger and larger as She feeds on the slaughter.
