Open to both law and non-law graduates, this 16-month, eight subject program is designed for current directors, aspiring directors and leadership teams engaged with boards. Each subject comprises a two-day Intensive held at the beautiful Bond University Gold Coast campus, with the balance of content presented as online modules. Michael Blythe Chief Economist and Managing Director, Economics, Commonwealth Bank of Australia

Michael Blythe is the Chief Economist and Managing Director of Economics at the Commonwealth Bank (CBA). His extensive experience as an economist reflects more than thirty years working in economic policy and financial market- related areas.

Michael’s role encompasses monitoring, analysing and forecasting trends in economy and financial markets. In addition, he prepares a wide range of research material on matters of current interest. In his capacity as the CBA’s Chief Economist, he is a regular conference presenter and media commentator on major economic developments and themes. Michael and his team have consistently ranked in the top three for macroeconomic analysis advice in various industry polls.

Michael works in the Institutional Banking and Markets division of the Commonwealth Bank. This division is responsible for managing the Group’s relationships with major corporate, institutional and government clients and providing a full range of capital raising, transactional and risk management products and services.

After graduating in Economics from the University of in 1982, he spent a total of 13 years in various roles within the Economic Group of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). This included a stint at the International Monetary Fund in 1988. He was the RBA's Senior Economist from 1991-95. Key features of these roles involved the provision of economic analysis and policy advice.

Sara James Journalist and author Twitter: @SaraJamesAus

Sara James is an Emmy award-winning foreign correspondent and accomplished author. She also reports on United States (US) politics for ABC News Breakfast with her featured segment American in Oz. Sara co-anchored ABC News 24’s coverage of the 2016 US election and the 2017 Presidential Inauguration. She provides analysis for The Project, ABC Radio Melbourne, and other news outlets.

Prior to moving to Australia in 2008, Sara was a Correspondent for NBC Dateline based in New York. She travelled the world to report on stories including the Taliban; modern slavery in Sudan; the Bosnian War Crimes Tribunal; and 9/11, in her former hometown of New York. Sara has received numerous awards including the Overseas Press Club of America Citation for Excellence, the US National Press Club award, and an Emmy. Sara also served as guest anchor on NBC broadcasts including the Today Show; NBC Nightly News; and MSNBC.

Sara is the author of An American in Oz (Allen & Unwin), co-author of The Best of Friends (HarperCollins) and editor of An Extraordinary School (ACER Press).

Dr Peter van Onselen is Professor of Politics and Policy at Griffith University. He is also Political Editor at Network Ten and the Contributing Editor at The Australian newspaper.

Peter holds a Bachelor of Arts with first class honours, a Master of Commerce and a Master of Policy Studies as well as a PhD in political science. Peter is the author or editor of six books, including four best sellers, with his books shortlisted for awards including the John Button prize for writings on public policy and the Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards.

His biography on was ranked by as the best biography of 2007. Peter has won Walkley and Logie awards for his broadcast journalism and a News Award for his feature and opinion writing.

Professor Nick James Executive Dean, Faculty of Law, Bond University

Professor Nick James is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Law at Bond University. He is a former commercial lawyer and has been practising as an academic since 1996.

He is passionate about legal education and the role of law schools in modern society. His areas of teaching expertise include law in context; legal theory; animal law; business law; and company law. He has won numerous awards for his teaching including a National Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning, and he is the author of three textbooks: Business Law, Critical Legal Thinking and The New Lawyer (with Rachael Field and Jackson Walkden- Brown).

He has written numerous journal articles, book chapters; conference papers in the areas of legal education; critical legal theory; and disruption of the legal services sector.

Nick is Executive Director of the Bond University Centre for Professional Legal Education; Executive Editor of the Legal Education Review; Chair of the Australasian Law Teachers Association (ALTA); and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law.

Professor Simon Jackman Chief Executive Officer, United States Studies Centre Twitter: @SimonJackman

Simon Jackman commenced as Chief Executive Officer of the United States Studies Centrein April 2016. Between 1996 and 2016, he was a Professor of Political Science and Statistics at Stanford University.

Simon's teaching and research centres on public opinion; election campaigns; political participation; and electoral systems with special emphasis on American and Australian politics. His research has appeared in the leading journals of political science, including the American Political Science Review; the American Journal of Political Science; the Journal of Politics; Public Opinion Quarterly; Political Analysis; the British Journal of Political Science; Electoral Studies and the Australian Journal of Political Science. He is the author of Bayesian Analysis for the Social Sciences (Wiley 2009), a widely used textbook on Bayesian statistical methods with an emphasis on applications in the social sciences.

Simon’s current research projects focus on the opportunities and challenges of web-based survey research; the political and scientific consequences of under- representing unlisted or hard-to-reach populations in social research; predictive models of political behavior; and methods for large scale, automated coding and analysis of political speech.

Simon was born and raised in Brisbane, and graduated with first class Honours in Government from the University of Queensland. He earned his doctorate at the University of Rochester and Princeton University. His first academic appointment was at the University of Chicago, followed by a Visiting Fellowship at Australian National University, prior to taking up his appointment at Stanford. Peter Varghese AO Chancellor, The University of Queensland

Peter took up his position as the 14th Chancellor at The University of Queensland in July 2016.

Prior to this appointment Peter was Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in December 2012 to July 2016. His diplomatic appointments include High Commissioner to India (2009-12); High Commissioner to Malaysia (2000-02); and postings to Tokyo, Washington and Vienna.

From 2004 to 2009, Peter was Director General of the Office of National Assessments, a statutory office which reports directly to the Prime Minister and also coordinates the Australian intelligence community. In 2003, he was the senior international adviser in the office of Prime Minister John Howard. He also headed up the international division of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet from 1998 to 1999.

In 1996-97, Peter headed up the secretariat which drafted Australia’s first White Paper on foreign and trade policy.

Peter was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) in 2010 for distinguished service to public administration, particularly in leading reform in the Australian intelligence community and as an adviser in the areas of foreign policy and international security. He was awarded a Doctor of Letters honoris causa by The University of Queensland in July 2013 in recognition of his distinguished service to diplomacy and Australian public service.

In October 2016, Peter took up the position of non-Executive Director on the Board of AMP.

Peter is a graduate and university medalist in history from The University of Queensland. He is married to Margaret Varghese. They have one adult son and a grandson.

Melinda Cilento Chief Executive, CEDA Twitter: @MelindaCilento

Melinda is a company director and experienced senior executive. She is a non- executive director of Woodside Petroleum and Australian Unity and Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia. Melinda is also a member of NAB's advisory council on corporate responsibility as well as a member of the Parliamentary Budget Office panel of expert advisors.

She was previously a Commissioner with the Productivity Commission and Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Economist with the Business Council of Australia. Melinda has also previously held senior roles with the Federal Department of Treasury, Invesco and the International Monetary Fund.

Melinda’s executive and director experience covers the corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors and she has a strong track record of working collaboratively across sectors.

Melinda’s professional qualifications include a Masters of Economics (Australian National University), and Bachelor of Economics (Hons) and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology), (Flinders University, SA). She has also completed the AICD Company Directors Course.

Melinda began as CEDA Chief Executive Officer in October 2017.
