Hotel (3 days), airfare (Economy class), ground transportation, and most meals will be covered. Please remember to keep all relevant receipts. Currency Once you arrive at the airport, ask a staff member where the currency exchange is located. Most services will take credit card, but it is recommended that you exchange a small sum for South Korean currency. ₩30,000 should be more than enough for a meal and taxi fare from Daegu International Airport or Dongdaegu Station (if you take the KTX train) to the hotel. If you plan to take the KTX, that will cost an additional ₩30,000-50,000 unless you paid and reserved beforehand. The currency in South Korea is the Won (₩; KRW). Going from Seoul to Daegu There are flights that go from Seoul (Incheon International Airport) to Daegu (Daegu International Airport). Dongdaegu Station. For more adventurous travelers, there is also the Korea Train eXpress (KTX), which takes about 2-3 hours and runs every 20-30 minutes. You may purchase a KTX ticket at the station when you arrive or make a reservation online (up to 1 month in advance; http://www.letskorail.com/ebizbf/EbizBfTicketSearch.do). In either case, please make sure to have plenty of time in between your flight’s arrival and train’s departure. Important Notes: Please purchase the economy ticket and keep your receipt/reservation for reimbursement purposes. Dongdaegu Station is different from Daegu Station. Choose Dongdaegu Station as your destination. You have the option of taking the KTX (2 hrs) or the Mugunghwa (4 hrs). The KTX is recommended. It will be simplest and relatively cheap to take a taxi. In South Korea, a taxi is available for passengers when the top light of the taxi is on. After signaling a taxi, show the driver the address in Korean (see below). Taxis may or may not accept credit card, so you may need to visit a currency exchange in the airport. Tipping is not customary. Please ask for a receipt: 영수증을 주세요. When you check in, the hotel will have your name and request a card for incidentals. The hotel room for 3 nights is covered. With the enactment of the Korea Appraisal Board Act in September 2016, KAB has undergone a transformation from an organization specializing in real estate appraisal to an organization dedicated to real estate market surveys and management as well as making announcements of official land value and related statistics. Maintaining order and stability in the Korean real estate market is an especially important task undertaken by KAB. The KAB Real Estate Market Report published semiannually in the first and second halves of the year provides reliable information on the real estate market including the future outlook, based on comprehensive and in-depth analyses of the current trends, with the aim of ensuring order in the real estate market. The real estate market in Korea in 2016 became more stable compared to the previous year due to the influence of the economic slowdown and the new loan restriction policy concerning tighter loan review regulations. Notable trends in the year included the overheated pre-construction parceling-out market for the Gangnam reconstruction projects and the rise in housing prices in the Seoul Capital Area; however, following the announcement of the real estate policy on November 3, 2016 speculative investments declined, and the market became more stabilized centering on actual demand. Also, in some of the regions outside the Seoul Capital Area, real estate prices began to be on a downturn as a result of an industrial recession and increased housing supply.

The proximity to the HSR station could be considered as a core district to maximize the industrial benefit through the HSR network. From this perspective, this study considers the agglomeration effect of HSR within the HSR station-area and analyzed the agglomerated spatial pattern through hotspot analysis by service industry in the cases of Korea and Japan using GIS. This study analyzed the service industry within 1km distance from 8 HSR stations of Korea and 4 Kyushu Shinkansen stations of Japan. The results suggest that the hotspot patterns are observed in the service industry within 1km distance from the HSR station of Korea and Japan, except for two HSR stations of Gupo station and Kagoshima-Chuo station. Leisure, amusement, association, and other specific service industries could be affected by HSR passengers and knowledge-spillovers through HSR station. Therefore, the observed hotspot districts near the HSR station-area could explain an agglomeration pattern of the service industry through a closeness to the HSR station.

A large amount of travel data has been collected while Kakao Mobility Corp. has been committed to pursuing innovation.     Industrial Organization Effects of High-Speed Rail Service Introduction in Korea Jisun Baek Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 c 2012 Jisun Baek All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Industrial Organization Effects of High-Speed Rail Service Introduction in Korea Jisun Baek The goal of this thesis is to investigate changes in consumers’ choices and their welfare due to the introduction of new products, taking firms’ reactions into con- sideration. I perform empirical analyses using Korean transportation industry data to evaluate the impact of high-speed train introduction on passenger travel. This work adds to the existing literature by considering the changes in product char- acteristics or the set of products offered to consumers after new product introduc- tion, and investigates how those changes affect consumer welfare. The analysis provides a rich insight into the transportation industry and the relationship be- tween the modes of transportation which contributes to enhancing the quality of government’s policies regarding related industries. The first part of my thesis investigates the changes in utilization of different modes of transportation in Korea after the introduction of high-speed train using a fixed effect model and a difference in differences model. My results show the significant impact of the introduction of high-speed train on the entire transporta- tion industry and provide evidence that modes of transportation not only compete but also complement each other. After high-speed trains were introduced in 2004, inter-city bus and airline industries lost their customers in routes where they di- rectly competed with high-speed rails, while the numbers of rail passengers in- creased.
