Ltd., Korea INTRODUCTION South Korea experienced its biggest earthquake in recent history on September 12, 2016. The Gyeongju earthquake of magnitude (Mw) 5.4 has initiated a significant activity in the area of seismic safety for nuclear power plants. Initial reports indicate that the nature of this earthquake is similar to the recent findings from geophysical investigations in Central and Eastern United States (CEUS), i.e., the earthquake ground motions contain not only the low frequency content but also some high frequency content. As is the case with most of the nuclear plants in CEUS, the safe shutdown earthquake (SSE) for most of the Korean plants have only low frequency content (below 10 Hz). Therefore, the nuclear plants in Korea are beginning to conduct a detailed seismic safety assessment of their structures, systems, and components (SSC). In the context of seismic safety assessment, high frequency motions are not likely to cause damage to structural systems as the displacements associated with such motions are relatively very small. Yet, past experience around the world has shown that electrical instruments such as relays, breakers, and contact switches can exhibit loss of functionality due to high frequency motions.

ABSTRACT This study provides a new theological approach for interpreting the Non- Church Movement (NCM) in Korea. Previous studies have been written from a historical perspective. Therefore, an examination of the spirituality and characteristics of the NCM from a theological standpoint is a new approach. The present study investigates the connection between the NCM and Confucianism. It attempts to highlight the influence of Confucian spirituality on the NCM, in particular the Confucian tradition of learning. It also examines the link between the NCM and Quakerism, in particular the influence of Quaker ecclesiology on the NCM. This too has not been examined in previous studies. The thesis argues that the theological roots of NCM ecclesiology lie in the relatively flat ecclesiology of the Quaker movement in the USA.

    STUDIA ORIENTALNE 2021, nr 2 (20) ISSN 2299-1999 https://doi.org/10.15804/so2021209 Haesung Lee1 Joseon Literati’s Righteous Principles (Yiriron) as a Moral Practice in the Political Realities – Its Meaning and Limitation in a Historical Context Introduction:Dohak – the Joseon Neo-Confucianism Neo-Confucianism flourished as a central ideology and absolute social order during the Joseon dynasty (朝鮮 1392–1910). “Neo-Confucianism” is a gen- eral term commonly applied to the revival of the various strands of Confucian philosophy during the Chinese Sòng dynasty (宋 960–1280 C.E.), re-exam- ined and reconstructed by Zhu Xi (朱熹, 1130–1200 AD.) It provided Koreans with philosophical speculation, moral and social norms, and a most strongly functional lifestyle. However, the terms of Joseon Neo-Confucianism con- note some specific characteristics, compared to classic Confucianism and the Chinese version of “Neo-Confucianism”2. The term of Dohak (道學 Chin. Dàoxué) – Dao (Way) Learning – already existed in classical Confucian context. However, in Korea, it is generally called Dohak (道學), which concerns Neo-Confucianism of the Joseon dynasty in a holistic scale. Thus, a proper understanding of the term Dohak is essential to comprehend the essence and particular characteristics of Korean Neo-Con- fucianism. Among the similar terms which refer to Neo-Confucianism, such as Jujahak (朱子學 Chin. On September 12, 2016, earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.1 and 5.8 consecutively occurred in Gyeongju. 14 months later, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 occurred in Pohang, about 30 km away from Gyeongju, on November 15, 2017. This study investigated the change in the indoor radon concentrations before and after earthquakes to identify if there is any pattern between them and found an interesting pattern. Prior to earthquakes, radon anomalies, which are radon concentration deviating by more than ±2σ from the seasonal average, was usually identified. When 5.0 or greater magnitude earthquakes occurred, the indoor radon concentrations decreased sharply a few days before them, and then continuously increased until the occurrence of the earthquake. With the enactment of the Korea Appraisal Board Act in September 2016, KAB has undergone a transformation from an organization specializing in real estate appraisal to an organization dedicated to real estate market surveys and management as well as making announcements of official land value and related statistics. Maintaining order and stability in the Korean real estate market is an especially important task undertaken by KAB. The KAB Real Estate Market Report published semiannually in the first and second halves of the year provides reliable information on the real estate market including the future outlook, based on comprehensive and in-depth analyses of the current trends, with the aim of ensuring order in the real estate market. The real estate market in Korea in 2016 became more stable compared to the previous year due to the influence of the economic slowdown and the new loan restriction policy concerning tighter loan review regulations. Notable trends in the year included the overheated pre-construction parceling-out market for the Gangnam reconstruction projects and the rise in housing prices in the Seoul Capital Area; however, following the announcement of the real estate policy on November 3, 2016 speculative investments declined, and the market became more stabilized centering on actual demand. Also, in some of the regions outside the Seoul Capital Area, real estate prices began to be on a downturn as a result of an industrial recession and increased housing supply.
