Development of the Global Film Industry The global film industry has witnessed significant transformations in the past few years. Regions outside the USA have begun to prosper while non-traditional produc- tion companies such as Netflix have assumed a larger market share and online movies adapted from literature have continued to gain in popularity. How have these trends shaped the global film industry? This book answers this question by analyzing an increasingly globalized business through a global lens. Development of the Global Film Industry examines the recent history and current state of the business in all parts of the world. While many existing studies focus on the internal workings of the industry, such as production, distribution and screening, this study takes a “big picture” view, encompassing the transnational integration of the cultural and entertainment industry as a whole, and pays more attention to the coordinated develop- ment of the film industry in the light of influence from literature, television, animation, games and other sectors. This volume is a critical reference for students, scholars and the public to help them understand the major trends facing the global film industry in today’s world. Qiao Li is Associate Professor at Taylor’s University, Selangor, Malaysia, and Visiting Professor at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon- Sorbonne. He has a PhD in Film Studies from the University of Gloucestershire, UK, with expertise in Chinese- language cinema. He is a PhD supervisor, a film festival jury member, and an enthusiast of digital filmmaking with award- winning short films. He is the editor ofMigration and Memory: Arts and Cinemas of the Chinese Diaspora (Maison des Sciences et de l’Homme du Pacifique, 2019). -

ANIMATION FILMS IN CHINA Yongliang Xiao and Daniela Pillgrab In beginning of 2011, Chinese animated movie, The Dreams of Jinsha, produced from Hangzhou, has been accepted for nominee to run for an Oscar award for the Best Animated Feature Film. It is very significant to Chinese animation industry since this is the first time in nation’s history that an animated film has ever accepted by Academy™ to compete with those giant including Dreamworks' Shrek Forever After and Disney-Pixar's Toy Story 3. In May of 2009, the Fifth China International Cartoon Festival enticed 780,000 people from 38 different countries to the same city, a Chinese renowned animation metropolis Hangzhou. Among 1.3 billion Chinese, according to "2007-2008 Analysis and Investment Consulting report of China's cartoon industry", there are at least 50 million cartoon consumers. However, the situation of the Chinese animation industry has not always been like that: although it was a Chinese who invented around 180 A. D. the first zoetrope– the so called “pipe which makes fantasies appear,” and although the first Chinese animated films where released in Shanghai in the 1920s with considerable success, the animation industry had difficulties in the last few years to assert itself on the domestic market: “Yet for all of the disruption of the Cultural Revolution, which plunged this country into severe political turmoil and international isolation from 1966 to 1976, China is not so much coming from way behind in the animation business as it is reviving a long vibrant tradition,“ states Howard W. French in an article, published by The New York Times in 2004. -

This copy has been supplied for the purpose of research for private study, on the understanding that it is copyright material, and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. 2 Abstract Since the last century, in mainland China, an interest in adapting classic stories into animated films, notably Princess Iron Fan (1941) and Lotus Lantern (1999), has developed, in order to promote Chinese history and traditional culture (Gu, 2013 and Fu, 2015). However, few of these adaptations reflect equal gender relations, and female characters have been generally written from a masculine point of view (Qin, 2012). This study thus aims to explore how aspects of the process of creating animation, including character design and the use of camera perspective, can be used to both analyse a traditional painting and propose an alternative model for the representation of female characters. This practice-based project also focuses on an analysis of female representation in the story Nymph of the Luo River, a traditional Chinese love story set in the Wei and Jin dynasties (220-589 BC), that was adapted from a famous scroll painting by the artist Gu Kaizhi (348-409 BC). -
The Intersecting Identities of an Adolescent Mexican American
THE INTERSECTING IDENTITIES OF AN ADOLESCENT MEXICAN AMERICAN GIRL CONSTRUCTED VIA HER LITERATE ACTIVITIES by Xiaodi Zhou (Under the Direction of Peter Smagorinsky) ABSTRACT In this case study conducted as a narrative inquiry lasting for three years, the author describes the lived realities of an early adolescent Mexican American girl living with undocumented parents as represented through her transactions with literacy. The body of this paper is organized into three articles. The first article describes my participant’s experiences growing up in an undocumented Mexican American family. Evidence in this paper primarily consists of observations and interview transcripts, wherein she discussed both her mother’s border crossing experience, and her everyday life in the U.S. as the first U.S.-born member of the family. Utilizing Anzaldúa (1987) and DeChaine’s (2012) notion of cultural bordering and García and Wei’s (2014) concept of translanguaging, I describe the way she captured her living experiences and cultural and linguistic positioning through language. The second article focuses on my participant’s literate experiences, particularly writing, as a means to convey her complex cultural and national affiliation. Her dialogic cultural positioning was manifested through translanguaging and hybrid cultural references (Bakhtin, 1986; Bhabha, 1990; García & Wei, 2014). This article derives much of its support from the actual writing she composed, and describes the relationship between language and cultural identity, both in its formation and its expression. I further contend that bilingual and translanguaging processes act as bridge between her cultural and linguistic memberships, and function as indication of her cultural identification. The last article addresses the effect of intersectionality (Núñez, 2014) in my participant’s identity, and how literacy often acts as that intersection.
