A pupil of Leschetizky, Mr. La Forge won his first triumphs as a concert pianist. Later, as accompanist to artists like Sembrich, Schumann-Heink, Matzenauer, and others, he toured Europe and the United States. As a teacher of voice, Mr. La Forge is preeminent. His method of relaxation and breath control is used and endorsed by Mmes. Lucrezia Bori, Margaret Matzenauer, Messrs. Lawrence Tibbett, Richard Crooks, and many others. His method is also endorsed by the late Dr. W. J. Hen derson, dean of American critics. Yet composition, studied under Labor and Navratil, has been for Mr. La Forge a fruitful means of self-expression. His many beautiful songs are widely known and his piano com positions are not less successful. AND THERE WERE SHEPHERDS ABIDING IN THE FIELD .50 High Voice (V1367). Low Voice (V1368) j J. Our aim in transferring 78s to compact DIE WALKÜRE disc is simple: to allow the full musical enjoyment of these recordings without the • distraction of intrusive surface noise between the performer and the listener. This is achieved by a process which re-records rather than re-masters the original sound. • First, to maintain the original sound, several takes are made of each 78. These LE POSTILLON DE LONJUMEAU takes are then digitally edited together and any intrusive clicks or thumps are IL TROVATORE removed at this stage: the removal is judged by human ear alone, and not with the • TREASURY aid of computer programs or electronic filters. Only mint condition 78rpm pressings manufactured from the finest materials of the time are used for transfer, providing a further, natural reduction in surface noise. The result captures for all time the immediacy of the original performances.

LaBudde Department of Special Collections NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION HISTORICAL SKETCH In 1896, the composer Edward MacDowell and Marian, his wife, bought a farm in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where they spent summers working in peaceful surroundings. There, MacDowell said, he produced more and better music. MacDowell, a founder of the American Academy in Rome, knew that artists from different disciplines enriched each other's artistic lives, and he and Marian dreamed of making a community on their property where artists could work in an ideal place in the stimulating company of peers. In 1906, prominent citizens of his time, among them Grover Cleveland, Andrew Carnegie, and J. Pierpont Morgan, created a fund in his honor. The fund enabled Edward and Marian to carry out their plan. Although MacDowell lived to see the first Colonists arrive, he died in 1908. It was under Marian's leadership that most of the 32 studios were built. Until her death in 1956, she traveled across the country giving lecture- recitals to raise funds and gain support for the Colony.
