Music 133: Rise and Fall of Tin Pan Alley (Subotnik, Spr. 2003)—p. 1 MUSIC 133: SEMINAR IN AMERICAN MUSIC: THE RISE AND FALL OF TIN PAN ALLEY Spring Semester, 2003 Rose Rosengard Subotnik COURSE DESCRIPTION: Focusing on the decades between the 1880s and the 1950s, this course examines social, musical and commercial forces behind the emergence and decline of Tin Pan Alley as well as changes in the substance, treatment, and significance of its songs during their years of popularity. Topics addressed include national identity and race relations as well as the difficulties of analyzing popular music. GOALS OF COURSE: The goal of this course is to give you a sound musical, historical, and critical sense of the Tin Pan Alley type of song, of the changes in style and role that characterized such songs over several generations, and of the various kinds of responses they have generated. Questions we will consider include 1) musical ones (e.g. What repertories does the term “Tin Pan Alley song” designate? In what ways is it useful to discuss the musical characteristics of such songs [their history? their structure? the various styles and mediums that made use of such songs? the identity of the artists who presented them?]] How might we assign musical value to this general category of song, and how might we evaluate individual songs within this category? Why is the Tin Pan Alley song typically denigrated in contrast to jazz, blues, and rock music? What happened to this type of song in the late 1940s and the 1950s, both before and during the transition to rock and roll?); and 2) cultural ones (e.g. -

Letters from Ruth: Since the 1950s, my grandmother's children have been scattered across the nation from the family farm in Iowa. My family came to Oregon in the early '60s. Since then, my grandmother has kept track of all her children and grandchildren and helped them keep track of each other. In this essay, I examine how my grandmother creates a sense of continuity among the family through her scrapbooks and letters. II. The Walking Circle: In the late '70s,I was a teenager in Bend, Oregon, dreaming of becoming a great writer. I walked around Bend late at night and filled many notebooks with my aspirations. In this essay,I look back into those notebooks from the perspective of a summer job I had ten years later. (With these exceptions: the 1891 set Trois Poèmes de Verlaine could not be included for lack of space; the 1903 Cinq Poèmes de Charles Baudelaire Dans le jardin has been inserted in its place.) 5 Le balcon [7:41] the vocal writing in these songs varies, but in most of them there is the emphasis on the middle 6 harmonie du soir [4:23] and low range characteristic of much French vocal music. Therefore every downward transposition 7 Le jet d’eau [5:55] has the effect of thickening the texture and darkening the color Debussy had in mind. -

The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection A Handlist A wide-ranging collection of c. 4000 individual popular songs, dating from the 1920s to the 1970s and including songs from films and musicals. Originally the personal collection of the singer Rita Williams, with later additions, it includes songs in various European languages and some in Afrikaans. Rita Williams sang with the Billy Cotton Club, among other groups, and made numerous recordings in the 1940s and 1950s. The songs are arranged alphabetically by title. Daily Sparkle CD - A Review of Famous Songs of the Past “Fascinating Facts” May 2018 Track 1 My Very Good Friend The Milkman Johnny Burke was a lyricist, widely regarded as one of the finest writers of popular songs in America between the 1920s and 1950s. In 1934, he and Harold Spina wrote "My Very Good Friend, the Milkman" which was a novelty hit for Fats Waller. Fats Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943), born Thomas Wright Waller, was a jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer. Waller was one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in his homeland and in Europe. He was also a prolific songwriter and many songs he wrote or co-wrote are still popular, such as "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me”. He was once ‘kidnapped’ by friends of Al Capone where he was taken at gunpoint to Al Capone’s birthday party where he was the surprise guest. Once he’d realised the gangsters weren’t going to kill him he played for 3 days earning thousands of dollars in tips! He enjoyed success touring the United Kingdom and Ireland in the 1930s. He appeared in several feature films and short subject films, most notably Stormy Weather in 1943, which was released July 21, just months before his death. Track 2 Hound Dog Hound Dog is a twelve-bar blues song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was recorded by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton in 1952. The song has been recorded more than 250 times with the best-known version being the July 1956 recording by Elvis Presley.
