KMJ November 2012.Indd Stunning Manx and Scottish Gaelic performances at this year’s Cooish Festival This year’s Cooish Manx and Inter-Gaelic Festival had a wonderfully relaxed feel, with Manx music at every turn. Not only was there a packed session in the Manx Gaeltacht that is the Albert, Purt le Moirrey, but there was busking outside Douglas Post Offi ce and very fi ne support acts for the Cooish gig in the Centenary Centre in Peel. Supporting the wonderful Scottish duo MacMaster/Hay were two new groups. The fi rst stemmed from Paul Rogers’ Club Kiaull at QEII High School and showcased the very fi ne talents of young singers, fi ddle and whistle players Isla Callister-Wafer and Doona Lambden, with Paul Rogers supporting them brilliantly on guitar. They were followed by a new partnership - Ruth Keggin and Matt Creer - taking a mix of Manx Gaelic songs and self-penned material. Ruth also took time to teach Manx songs to visiting lecturer Dr Emily McEwan-Fujita from Nova Scotia, who was keen to take a lot of Manx song in the form of Skeeal, Caarjyn Cooidjagh, Staa, Cliogaree Twoaie and Brian Stowell (just to mention a few!) home with her. The Cooish is a great way for people to share Gaelic culture and to swap ideas. It’s also a great time to chat away in our beloved chengey ny mayrey - the Manx Gaelic language. Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th November will see the Isle of Man host its fi rst trombone extravaganza - THE GREAT BIG FAT MANX TROMBONE FESTIVAL with THE BLACK DYKE TROMBONE QUARTET! The event will open with Saturday pm workshops led by Brett Baker and his Black Dyke Trombone Quartet, followed by an evening of fun with a trombonists open mic / social session at Northern Lights Community Centre, Ramsey. Sunday will see a late morning rehearsal followed by a lunchtime recital featuring The Black Dyke Trombone Quartet, Ramsey Town Band, and of course! The Great Big Fat Manx Trombone Choir! The event will be polished off with a post concert Manx Cream Tea included in the ticket price for everyone! The event is intended to both celebrate and promote the trombone – a fantastic and incredibly versatile instrument that is at home in an orchestra as it is in a jazz band or even folk music! In a world where the trombone is becoming increasingly ‘endangered’, this is also a chance to celebrate the Island’s wealth of trombonists – an off shoot of our brass band tradition. Organisers Jackie Morrey-Grace and Peter Cannell state “All trombone players of Mann and beyond are welcome – young, old, inbetween - from the absolute beginner to the seasoned pro. We really want this to be a great success and our intention is bring everyone together for a weekend of fun, perhaps fl ushing out some old trombonists and maybe even creating some new ones!” Other brass players who can grab a trombone for the weekend are also welcome of course as the workshops will cover many technical challenges! The event has received strong and generous support so far, from the British Trombone Society and the Black Dyke Quartet to the Isle of Man Arts Council. Jackie states, “We have also had wonderful support from the people at Warwick Music Supplies who have kindly donated 2 pbones (plastic beginner trombones) for us to competition off and to Times illustrator, David Lyttleton who created our little logo and mascot ‘Viking Tom Bone’. We are so grateful to everyone involved so far for their kindness and enthusiasm”. Leila Kneale and Robin Boyle from Phynnodderree organised a wonderful reunion session at the Tynwald Inn, St Johns on Friday 19 October. With faces from over the years, the tunes rolled on and on. Leila and Robin extended a warm welcome to everyone and reminded people that they were there every Friday if they wanted to have a tune. Fiddle player and artist Heather Hall also launched her lovely new Manx music themed notelets which are available from the session. With a mixture of etchings and colourful graphics, they celebrate Manx music wonderfully. Photos: Andi Howland for MHF kiaull manninagh jiu 11/12 manx heritage foundation BREE OCTOBER HOP TU NAA WORKSHOP WEEKEND Bree celebrated Hop tu naa with its 7th annual weekend of music, dance and drama workshops at Douglas Youth Arts Centre on Kensington Road. Taking the traditional songs, dance and stories of Hop tu naa as inspiration, the talented youngsters worked with Bree tutors to produce a very creative concert at the end of the weekend. As well as performances from three new folk groups, Moot Reesht, The Weird Frogs and The Spooky Singers, the programme also included a new song called “Clock Strikes Twelve”, a play about Jinny the Witch, compositions in the Manx idiom and a fantastic new dance for four called “The Accident” (Y Drogh Haghyrt). The concert ended with an all-singing, all- dancing and all-playing rendition of Hop tu naa! kiaull manninagh jiu 11/12 manx heritage foundation MANX NATIONAL AIRS THE LOST WORK OF DEEMSTER J.F. GILL AND DOCTOR JOHN CLAGUE by Stephen Miller Many will be familiar with Manx National Songs (1896) and maybe, less so, with Manx National Music (1898), both the outcome of the collecting activities in the 1890s of the Gill Brothers, W.H. Gill and Deemster J.F. Gill, as well as Dr John Clague. Planned from the start, however, was a trilogy of publications, and the one that did not appear was Manx National Airs. Deemster Gill, when President of the Isle of Man Natural History and Antiquarian Society in his retiring address from 1897 outlined the aims of this publication: The large and increasing amount of our material causes us still to pause, but we hope ere long to be in a position to publish the third section of our work (which in antiquarian importance is the fi rst), consisting of all the melodies we have collected, with suitable notes, explanatory of their character, peculiarities, probable origin and so on, indicating too the localities in which they were found, and the names, ages, occupations, &c., of those from whom they were obtained, and whose knowledge of them was traditional. Manx National Music (1898) contained an essay by W.H. Gill titled “Manx Music: A Sketch,” where he mentioned “[t]he propriety of these restorations, or the contrary, can be tested when, in accordance with our original plan, the actual melodies as we found them shall have been published in a separate volume.” This line must have galled his brother and Clague as they were both then well aware that Boosey’s promise to publish Manx National Airs was a verbal one only and not the subject of a contract as was Manx National Songs and Manx National Music, and further, he was not going to follow up on it. In addition, Gill himself did not particularly wish to see it appear and here was paying lip service to the idea. The line quoted contains the problem that he had with the intention to publish “the actual melodies,” namely that people would then see the nature and extent of his so-called “restorations.” W.H. Gill produced the test pieces for the Manx Music classes at The Guild, drawing on the material that both he and Clague had collected.

Manx Gaelic and physics, a personal journey Brian Stowell. Doolish, Mee Boaldyn 2011 At the age of sixteen at the beginning of 1953, I became very much aware of the Manx language, Manx Gaelic, and the desperate situation it was in then. I was born of Manx parents and brought up in Douglas in the Isle of Man, but, like most other Manx people then, I was only dimly aware that we had our own language. All that changed when, on New Year’s Day 1953, I picked up a Manx newspaper that was in the house and read an article about Douglas Fargher. He was expressing a passionate view that the Manx language had to be saved – he couldn’t understand how Manx people were so dismissive of their own language and ignorant about it. This article had a dra- matic effect on me – I can say it changed my life. I knew straight off somehow that I had to learn Manx. In 1953, I was a pupil at Douglas High School for Boys, with just over two years to go before I possibly left school and went to England to go to uni- versity. There was no university in the Isle of Man - there still isn’t, although things are progressing in that direction now. Amazingly, up until 1992, there 111 JCLL 2010/2011 Stowell was no formal, official teaching of Manx in schools in the Isle of Man.

    Studia Celtica Posnaniensia, Vol 2 (1), 2017 doi: 10.1515/scp-2017-0006 SCHOLARSHIP AND LANGUAGE REVIVAL: LANGUAGE IDEOLOGIES IN CORPUS DEVELOPMENT FOR REVIVED MANX CHRISTOPHER LEWIN University of Edinburgh ABSTRACT In this article the role of different ideological viewpoints concerning corpus development within the Manx revival movement in the second half of the twentieth century is explored. In particular, the work of two prominent figures is examined: the Celtic scholar Robert L. Thomson, who published extensively especially on Manx language and literature, and also contributed to the revival, particularly as editor of several pedagogical resources and as a member of the translation committee Coonceil ny Gaelgey, and Douglas Fargher, a tireless activist and compiler of an English-Manx Dictionary (1979). Broadly speaking, Thomson was of a more preservationist bent, cautious in adapting the native resources of the language and wary of straying too far from attested usage of the traditional language, while Fargher was more radical and open especially to borrowing from Irish and Scottish sources. Both were concerned, in somewhat different ways, to remove perceived impurities or corruptions from the language, and were influenced by the assumptions of existing scholarship. A close reading of the work of these scholar-activists sheds light on the tensions within the revival movement regarding its response to the trauma of language death and the questions of legitimacy and authenticity in the revived variety. Particular space is devoted to an analysis of the preface of Fargher’s dictionary, as well as certain features of the body of the work itself, since this volume is probably the most widely consulted guide to the use of the language today.

As Hon. Members will be aware from the information circulated regarding these appointments, the individuals proposed by Council have extensive experience and skills relevant to the work of the Foundation and were selected following an open and transparent public appointment recruitment process. The Manx Heritage Foundation Act requires the Foundation, amongst other things, to promote and assist in the permanent preservation of the cultural heritage of the Island. Miss Skillicorn and Dr Stowell are previous lay members of the Foundation and Council are pleased to propose that they are appointed to the Foundation for another term. Dr Stowell will be well-known to Hon. Members through his pioneering and tireless work to promote the teaching and use of Manx language. This includes writing Manx language courses and presenting programmes on Manx Radio. Miss Skillicorn is a leading figure in local historical circles, being a lecturer to students on the MA course in Manx Studies, participating in research programmes on the Island’s experience in World War I and a published author of titles mixing social history and memoires.

Brown. It uses the literature in the Isle of Man over the period 1880-1980 as a means of identifying attitudes toward two successive waves of cultural survival and revival. Through a reading of Brown's Prologue to the first series of Fo'c's'le Yarns, 'Spes Altera', "another hope", 1896, and Douglas' 'The Tholtan' – which formed part of her last collection of poetry, Island Magic, published in 1956 – the differing nationalist and revivalist roles of the two authors are revealed.

  • Securing the Future of Manx Gaelic
    173 Securing the Future of Manx Gaelic Philip Gawne Introduction Against all odds, Manx Gaelic has clawed itself back from the verge of extinction over the past thirty years. It is more than surprising that a language declared dead by academics and rejected by the Manx community some thirty years ago is rapidly growing in popularity, has steadily increasing numbers of speakers and has recently received substantial Government backing through the introduction of Manx Gaelic medium education in September 2001. This chapter offers an explanation for the remarkable change in fortunes for Manx and chronicles the first attempts at language planning undertaken by the Manx Government in the mid 1980s and 1990s. It is, however, first appropriate to contextualise these developments with a brief overview of the historical development of the Manx language. I It appears that distinctions between Scottish, Irish and Manx Gaelic began to emerge in the l 3th to l 4th century during the tumultuous period following the collapse of the Norse kingdom of Mann and the Isles and prior to the long settled period of English control through the Stanleys. The first written evidence for the existence of Manx Gaelic as a language or dialect separate from the other Gaelic languages appears as late as 1611 with Bishop Phillips' translation of the Book of Common Prayer (Moore 1893).     The Last Native Manx Gaelic Speakers. The Final Phase: ‘Full’ or ‘Terminal’ in speech?1 George Broderick Introduction The term ‘Last Native Manx Gaelic speakers’ refers to those seventy informants2 interviewed, in the form of either sound-record or questionnaire, etc., between 1909 and 1972.3 These interviews were conducted in three phases, the “Final Phase” of which refers to the last fifteen informants (Phase 3): Phase 1: The Vienna Recordings (1909). Interval of 20 years follows between 1 and 2. Phase 2: The Marstrander Recordings (1929-1933). Interval of 14 years follows between 2 and 3. Phase 3: The Final Phase (1947-1972)4 The intervals between the phases were sufficiently long enough to ensure that the informants for each individual phase were almost exclusive to that phase. Nevertheless, there was some overlap between Phases 2 and 3. Common to Phases 2 and 3 were the following four informants: Daniel Caine, John Kneen (The Gaaue), Thomas Leece, and Wilfred Wade. In Phase 2 they may have been ‘noted’ and perhaps visited, but were certainly visited in Phase 3. This article will concentrate on the fifteen endspeakers of Phase 3. The task in hand here is to determine whether any or all of the endspeakers could be regarded as ‘terminal’ or ‘full’ in their speech. ‘Terminal’ here refers to the speakers who had not learned their mother-tongue fully (in this case Manx), including the nuances of idiom, before circumstances obliged them to shift to the dominant language (English) to be able to communicate with monolingual English-speaking Manx men and women.

    Mind Your P’s and Q’s: Revisiting the Insular Celtic hypothesis through working towards an original phonetic reconstruction of Insular Celtic Rachel N. Carpenter Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges 0.0 Abstract: Mac, mac, mac, mab, mab, mab- all mean ‘son’, inis, innis, hinjey, enez, ynys, enys - all mean ‘island.’ Anyone can see the similarities within these two cognate sets 1 from orthographic similarity alone. This is because Irish , Scottish , Manx , Breton , Welsh , and Cornish 2 are related. As the six remaining Celtic languages, they unsurprisingly share similarities in their phonetics, phonology, semantics, morphology, and syntax. However, the exact relationship between these languages and their predecessors has long been disputed in Celtic linguistics. Even today, the battle continues between two firmly-entrenched camps of scholars- those who favor the traditional P-Celtic and Q-Celtic divisions of the Celtic family tree, and those who support the unification of the Brythonic and Goidelic branches of the tree under Insular Celtic, with this latter idea being the Insular Celtic hypothesis. While much reconstructive work has been done, and much evidence has been brought forth, both for and against the existence of Insular Celtic, no one scholar has attempted a phonetic reconstruction of this hypothesized proto-language from its six modern descendents. In the pages that follow, I will introduce you to the Celtic languages; explore the controversy surrounding the structure of the Celtic family tree; and present a partial phonetic reconstruction of Insular Celtic through the application of the comparative method as outlined by Lyle Campbell (2006) to self-collected data from the summers of 2009 and 2010 in my efforts to offer you a novel perspective on an on-going debate in the field of historical Celtic linguistics.
