Russell School of Journalism and Communications University of Regina Does the seemingly innocuous Canadian Press Stylebook wield much influence on general writ- ing style in Canada? And if -- as this writer contends -- it does, how can such influence be measured and, if necessary, contained? The questions are provoked by the recent publication of a new edition of the Stylebook, who1 ly revised and revamped. Overnight , the little blue (1966 and 1968 editions) or green (1974 and 1978) staff manual has expanded to a fat, fancy production with a $ 10.00 price tag. My own first exposure to the CP bible came when I joined the agency as a reporter in the Halifax bureau, in 1960. The 120-page manual that I was told to memorize contained a lot of mundane instruct ions on f i 1 ing wire-copy via teletype, some f i 1lers on the history of the agency and some rules on CP copy style. To a high school drop-out, many of these were useful and en1 ightening , 1ike the difference between "career" and "careen" (which the rest of the world still persists in ignoring). Some, even then, were archaic or arcane. For instance, peremptorily listed as "Under the Ban" were "chorine", "diesel ized ", natator", and "temblor" -- words that I had never encountered and which in the intervening decades I have never, ever felt any inclination to use.

JoHN mNRY LEwnv* HE recent application of the Sherman Act to the restrictions on membership by newspapers in the Associated Press' constituted a cause c~lebre primarily because of the prevailing public interest in the subject matter of the litigation. The case may well retain that status for some time to come for another reason as well, namely, implications contained in the majority opinion of the Supreme Court-suggestions which seem to extend the reach of both substantive sections2 of the statute as hitherto understood by antitrust lawyers. A full appreciation of the facts involved should cause no surprise as to the result of the case.     Oil and Gas News Briefs Compiled by Larry Persily June 7, 2018 Exxon, Rosneft continue with plans for Far East LNG project (Reuters; June 7) - U.S. major ExxonMobil and Russian energy company Rosneft expect their future joint project to produce more than 6.2 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year, Interfax news agency quoted an ExxonMobil manager as saying June 7. ExxonMobil is pushing ahead with efforts to develop its $15 billion Far East LNG project with Rosneft, despite being forced to exit some joint ventures in Russia due to Western sanctions. The LNG plant would be built on Sakhalin Island, north of Japan. The plant's capacity also could be increased from planned initial volumes, Interfax reported, citing James Grable, a manager at the Sakhalin-1 joint venture with Rosneft. Earlier this year, Exxon invited companies including China National Petroleum Corp.’s engineering arm to bid for construction contracts by October, sources with knowledge of the matter said. A final investment decision is due in 2019, they said. Exxon and Rosneft have also held discussions — as an alternative to building their own LNG plant — about feeding gas from their Sakhalin-1 fields into a planned third production unit at the liquefaction plant run by Gazprom and Shell, also on Sakhalin Island. That project, Sakhalin-2, started producing LNG in 2009, with capacity of 9.6 million tonnes per year. The Exxon-Rosneft Sakhalin-1 development has been producing oil since 2005. It’s current output is about 200,000 barrels a day, as the companies work toward an investment decision for the gas reserves.
