    P R O F I L E Clement Attlee was born on 3 January 1883 in Putney, the seventh of eight children. His father, Henry Attlee, was a solicitor and senior partner in the firm of Druces and Attlee, whose offices were in the Middle Temple. After being home-schooled, Attlee was educated at the preparatory school Northaw Place and then Haileybury College, both in Hertfordshire. At Haileybury, which had a strong military ethos, Attlee became an enthusiastic member of the Volunteer Rifle Corps. After leaving Haileybury in 1901 Attlee went on to University College, Oxford, where he studied Modern History. He specialised in Italian and Renaissance history and graduated in 1904 with a second-class degree. After leaving Oxford Attlee followed in his father’s footsteps and entered the legal profession, although without any great enthusiasm for it. He had been admitted to the Inner Temple on 30 January 1904, and in the autumn of that year entered the Lincoln’s Inn chambers of Sir Philip Gregory. His father’s connections meant he had already C L E M E N T dined at the Inner Temple; he was called to the Bar in March 1906. In October 1905, Attlee accompanied his brother Laurence to the A T T L E E Haileybury Club, a club in Stepney, East London for working-class boys, run by former Haileybury College pupils. THE FIRST LORD OF THE ADMIRALTY (The Earl of Selkirk) My Lords, the noble Lord is correct in his assumption. The purpose of the new title is to indicate more precisely the nature of the duties these ratings nowadays carry out. The Branch concerned considers the new names an improvement, and it can be compared with the change of the name from stoker to engineering mechanic. It brings them more into line with the terms used in civilian employment. The title of this rating is admittedly rather cumbersome when spoken in full, but it will normally be abbreviated in the letters "L.T.O." LORD CONESFORD My Lords, does that mean that in future a naval officer will never make a signal but will operate a tactical communication? Is the First Lord aware that for centuries our sailors have been masters of terse and vigorous English? Will the Admiralty honour this tradition instead of wallowing in gutless verbosity? THE EARL OF SELKIRK My Lords, I think the noble Lord may rest assured that the Royal Navy will continue to make signals of all characters. I think the noble Lord may also be assured that the Royal Navy will continue to express itself in terse English, whether in terms of endearment or otherwise.

Attlee’s experiences in London’s East End, volunteering at the boys club in Stepney and residing at Toynbee Hall, sparked his interest in social work during his thirties. Yet these experiences were fundamentally important in shaping Attlee into the Labour party leader he became. 1 Attlee: The Early Years lement Richard Attlee was born on the 3rd January 1883, the seventh of eight children, to Henry Attlee, a solicitor and liberal, and Ellen Bravery C Watson. He grew up in Putney, which at the time was similar to a small country town, surrounded by fields and farms in the outer suburbs of London, and which was beginning to experience suburban development in the decade of the 1880s. Attlee had a traditional childhood growing up in Victorian England; he was instilled with a sense of Christian values and developed an attachment to the British monarchy. Up until the age of nine Attlee was taught by his mother, his sisters and governesses and did not attend public school. One of the governesses, who taught Attlee, a Miss Hutchinson, was also responsible for teaching the young Winston Churchill prior to her post at the Attlee household. In 1892, Attlee attended a prep school at Northaw Place, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire.
