CHARLES GREY, 2nd

The government led by Prime Minister George Canning had authorised the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807 and the confiscation of the Danish fleet due to fears that Denmark’s neutrality was in danger with the prospect of a French invasion. However, the attack caused much controversy in parliament with accusations that the government greatly exaggerated Denmark’s ability and readiness to threaten British interests and that it had transformed Denmark into a hostile enemy.

This is a superb letter written by future Prime Minister Earl Grey and provides a fascinating insight into the furore which the attack caused, as well as providing an example of the conflicting views of British policy during the Napoleonic Wars. This is by far the most interesting and significantly historical letter we have been able to offer for years, a stunning political document.
