Chapter 3: The Catholic-Protestant Differences Although Catholics and Protestants have been moving cautiously toward each other, real minor and major differences still separate them, including their understandings and interpretations of grace, faith, authority in governance and teaching as it relates to scripture, the role of Mary, and the sacraments. -

Predy On the evening of Saturday, June 23, 2018, members our Eparchy, family and friends, gathered together to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Episcopal Ordination of Most Rev. Bishop Bryan Bayda, CSsR. The evening began with an Episcopal Divine Liturgy at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of St. George, followed by a reception and banquet in the cathedral auditorium. His Excellency Bishop Bryan Bayda, CSsR, with children and youth. Prior to the Episcopal Divine Liturgy, Bishop Bryan was greeted by the children and youth on the front steps of the Cathedral with the traditional Ukrainian offering of bread and salt. The giving of bread shows hospitality, while the salt expresses friendship. Salt also reminds us of Christ’s words in the Gospel according to St. Matthew, “You are the salt of the earth.” After this traditional greeting, the deacons, priests, Bishop Bawai Soro, of the Chaldean Eparchy of Canada, and Bishop Bryan Bayda processed into the church, accompanied by an Honour Guard from the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada and Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada. Common Christological Declaration between the Catholic Church and the Assyrian Church of the East - An Evaluation1 On the 11th November 1994 the Catholic Church and the Assyrian Church of the East made a very historic agreement in Christology. His Holiness John Paul II and His Holiness Catholicos Mar Dinkha IV took a brave step to put an end to the Christological controversy, which kept these two churches apart for several centuries. These two leaders together with their hierarchy and faithful are determined to restore the full communion between the two churches. This Christological agreement is considered as a basic step towards that goal. Whatever might have been the understanding of these two churches regarding the other in the past, now onwards they declare before the world that there is no disagreement in Christology and they have a common faith in the mystery of Incarnation. Both the churches recognize mutually that they both have kept the apostolic faith and guarded it uncorrupted. This joint declaration confesses the faith in the Incarnate Word our Lord Jesus Christ as the only Son of God, who became man for our salvation in the fullness of time. This was the constant faith of both the churches in the mystery of Incarnation of our Lord. It affirms its faith in the full humanity and full divinity of the Lord. He, the Word of God who became man, is consubstantial with the Father and consubstantial with us in all things except sin. His divinity and his humanity are united in one unique person, without confusion, or change, without division or separation. -

Nestorius and Cyril: 5th Century Christological Division and Recent Progress in Reconciliation Ben Green Department of Theology and Religious Studies Villanova University I. Introduction The 5th century controversy of Bishop Nestorius of Constantinople and Bishop Cyril of Alexandria centered on the Person of Jesus Christ: To what extent is he human? To what extent divine? And to what extent and how are his humanity and divinity united? The controversy takes shape on two fronts: (1) the Christological debate, primarily because of the potential implications for soteriology (whether a certain conception of Christ can be considered an efficacious Savior); and (2) the persons involved, because each is venerated by his later adherents and thus an integral part of the ongoing debate. This fact, that the controversy continues to be worked out though it is more than 1500 years old, owes its significance to the ecumenical movement which emerged in the 20th century. This particular Christological problem has been at the center of much dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Ancient Churches of the East. And, as we will see, an examination of the ecumenical dialogue will provide us with fresh insights by which to reevaluate the initial controversy itself. II. Setting the Scene First, let us review the basic outline of events as they unfolded. Cyril (c. 378-444) succeeded his uncle Theophilus as Bishop of Alexandria in 412, after having begun his ecclesiastical career nine years earlier as Lector of the church of Alexandria. In contrast, Nestorius (d. ca. 451) was a monk in the Antioch area who was called upon to preach publicly in Antioch.1 Known as a powerful speaker, and receiving the recommendation of John of Antioch, in 428 Nestorius was appointed Bishop of Constantinople by Emperor Theodosius II. -

Neuhauser¨ 2 1 Astrophysikalisches Institut und Universit¨ats-Sternwarte, FSU Jena, Schillerg¨aßchen 2-3, 07745 Jena, Germany 2 Schillbachstraße 42, 07743 Jena, Germany Received Nov 2014, accepted 27 Feb 2015 Published online Key words AD 775 – solar activity – aurorae – sunspots – radiocarbon – history of astronomy A large variation in 14C around AD 775 has been considered to be caused by one or more solar super-flares within one year. We critically review all known aurora reports from Europe as well as the Near, Middle, and Far East from AD 731 to 825 and find 39 likely true aurorae plus four more potential aurorae and 24 other reports about halos, meteors, thunderstorms etc., which were previously misinterpreted as aurorae or misdated; we assign probabilities for all events according to five aurora criteria. We find very likely true aurorae in AD 743, 745, 762, 765, 772, 773, 793, 796, 807, and 817. There were two aurorae in the early 770s observed near Amida (now Diyarbakır in Turkey near the Turkish-Syrian border), which were not only red, but also green-yellow – being at a relatively low geomagnetic latidude, they indicate a relatively strong solar storm. However, it cannot be argued that those aurorae (geomagnetical latitude 43 to 50◦, considering five different reconstructions of the geomagnetic pole) could be connected to one or more solar super-flares causing the 14C increase around AD 775: There are several reports about low- to mid-latitude aurorae at 32 to 44◦ geomagnetical latitude in China and Iraq; some of them were likely observed (quasi-)simultaneously in two of three areas (Europe, Byzantium/Arabia, East Asia), one lasted several nights, and some indicate a particulary strong geomagnetic storm (red colour and dynamics), namely in AD 745, 762, 793, 807, and 817 – always without 14C peaks. -
