They came together to do what people do at reunions - to renew old friendships, to reminisce, to laugh, to look at old photos of them selves when they were younger, to sing "inside" songs, to get dressed up for a reception and to have a banquet with a speaker. In this case, the speaker was General William Westmoreland, and before the banquet, in the afternoon, the group had gone to Arlington National Cemetery to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They represented 1,600 women who had served (some in the 50's, some in the 60's and some in the 70's) in an American Red Cross program which provided recreation for U.S. servicemen on duty in Europe, Korea and Vietnam. It was named Supplemental Recreational Activities Overseas (SRAO). In Europe it was known as the Red Cross center program. In Korea and Vietnam it was Red Cross clubmobile service. -

PROLOGUE Bad Guys with Badges: A Vast Amount of Trouble Western outlaws were losers, by and large, as criminals are today. As a rule, they weren’t very bright either, which helps ac- count for them even being outlaws. But they were tough, ruthless men, and they rode in a largely trackless, sparsely populated, rug- ged land that gave them plenty of shelter from the law. The other side of the coin was the lawmen. They were just as hardy and usually somewhat smarter than the men—and the occasional woman—they pursued. The trouble was that the lawmen were generally ill paid—U.S. Deputy Marshals were paid by the arrest, for instance, and bore their own expenses. If they had to kill an outlaw who tried to kill them—except on a “dead or alive” warrant—they even ended up paying for the burial of the bad man’s remains. Moreover, their lives were in danger every day. For instance, more than sixty lawmen were killed west of Arkansas riding for Judge Parker’s court in Fort Smith. Long hours on horseback in all kinds of weather, constant danger, and miserable pay made the outlaw life sometimes seem an attractive alternative to law enforcement. Every outlaw, or would-be outlaw, dreamed of the Big Strike, financing a secure life of leisure in Bolivia, Mexico, or some place else far away. It is little wonder, then, that some peace officers turned their coats. His dad taught him to ride [horses?] at an early age, which enabled him to do cowboy work by the time he was seven Yrs old. [He?] remained on the stock farm until he was 21, at which time he left home to work elsewhere for the experience. Later, he returned home and persuaded his father to finance [him?] in an Edwards Co. ranching venture. He leased the XX Bar ranch, then bought 1,500 head of stocker cattle to raise. [Brankruptcy?] ended this venture in 1897, when he entered the Seymour [Texas?] Rodeo. After winning a riding prize, he entered the employ of the [Waggoner?] [Ranch?] in Clay Co. Following his father's demise in 1904, he invested his inheritance in 1,000 head of steers. [He?] leased [grazing?] land in Love Co., Okla, then sold the cattle in 1906. I also correct a few of my own mistakes (e.g., Fig. 3). The most important point though is this: The pièce de résistance from physicists Linsker and Garwin (their reductio ad absurdum—see Figure 21 ff.) remains not only unchallenged, but quite unaddressed by Dictabelt advocates. My fellow JFK conspiracy believers would like to discipline me for denying their case, but the facts do not support them, and their failure to address this reductio issue does them no credit. Until they address this paradox, the acoustical case for conspiracy lies lifeless in the morgue. That these promoters are unlikely (ever) to address this conundrum is provably based on the absence of any attempt to do so during the intervening 8 years. I here also briefly update my conclusions about the head shots, an issue explored in greater detail in my e-book, JFK’s Head Wounds (2015). My (new) monologue on the current controversy about p-values appears just before Appendix 1. Appendices 8–11 are all new; the cognoscenti may wish to begin there. Appendix 11 summarizes the Sonalysts 2013 report, which holds a quiver of arrows fatally targeted at the acoustic case. -

Trained to Kill by Dave Grossman This article was based on a presentation in an international peace conference in Bethel College, Kansas, and was published in the August, 1998 issue of Christianity Today. Since then it has been reprinted in numerous periodicals around the world. Murder Simulators Michael Carneal, the 14-year-old mass murderer in the Paducah, Kentucky school shootings had never fired a pistol in his life. He stole a .22 pistol from a neighbor, fired a few practice shots, and took it to school. FBI data shows that trained law enforcement officers average around 20% hits in real world situations at an average distance of 21 feet. In the 1998 Amadu Dialo shooting, four NYPD officers fired 41 shots at an unarmed African immigrant, at point blank range and hit him 19 times. This is about the level of accuracy you will find from trained marksmen in real world situations. In Los Angeles, in 1999, a neo-Nazi walked into a Jewish daycare center and fired over 70 shots, wounding five helpless children. This is the norm from untrained shooters. Michael Carneal fired eight shots, in a large foyer, at a high school prayer group as it was breaking up. Firing at a milling, screaming, running group, he hit eight different kids with eight shots, five of them head shots and the other three upper torso. I trained the Texas Rangers, the California Highway Patrol, and a battalion of U.S. Army Green Berets. When I told them of Carneal’s accuracy, they were stunned. Nowhere in the annals of military or law enforcement history can I find an equivalent “achievement.” Where does a 14-year-old boy who never fired a gun before get this “skill?” Video games. -

Facts and Procedure {¶2} In 2012, defendant-appellant Earl Jones fathered a child with Cyerra Prather. Jones and Prather dated for the next three years and eventually ended their relationship in October 2015. Approximately two months later, in December 2015, Prather began dating Kevin Neri. From January 2016 to May 2016, Neri lived with Prather and her family. {¶3} There was instant animosity between Jones and Neri. Jones regularly referred to Neri through racial epithets and directed vulgar insults at both Neri and Prather. Because of the relationship between Jones and Neri, Prather’s family took various steps to reduce the chances for confrontation. -

A Rhetorical Analysis of Andrew Moore’s Detroit Disassembled A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Communication of the College of Arts and Sciences by Katharine Nemeth B.A. University of Cincinnati July 2013 Committee Chair: Stephen Depoe, Ph.D. Abstract Ruin photography, widely called “ruin porn” by critics, is an artistic trend that has entered the conscience of artists and consumers alike. Andrew Moore’s Detroit Disassembled is one such exhibit that has received criticism despite its wide appeal to consumers. This essay attempts to explore the complex relationship between photograph and subject in the case of urban architectural artifacts. I will explore the intersection of documentary and art photography at which Moore’s photographs are located, suggesting his work serves as a generic hybrid. Through this project, I will attempt to unpack the visual and rhetorical elements present in Moore’s Detroit Disassembled. This project also seeks to analyze public reaction to Detroit Disassembled and to answer the question— what voices do these photographs privilege, and whose, if any, are ignored? This essay suggests that Detroit Disassembled, and further, Moore’s use of a generic hybrid of art and documentary photography, has opened the door for artistic demonstrations that serve to further the conversation about Detroit’s decline and the city’s future. ii iii Acknowledgments I would like to express the deepest appreciation to my fellow graduate students. -
