I will soon be meeting with Severn Trent to discuss the flooding issues in Rainworth. Many of you will be aware of the issues surrounding the sewage system and the disposal of floodwater. I will continue to lobby them until we reach a long term solution. I have also met with the Chairman of Rainworth Village Hall to discuss their funding and management. The Parish Council have been very supportive and anything you can do to support this community resource would be appreciated. For example, if you are considering organising a function please bear it in mind. I have had several letters from constituents concerned to hear that the Government is considering selling off the Forestry Commission and particularly the potential sale of Sherwood Forest. I completely understand why, like me, so many of you feel so protective of our iconic woods which have been placed in legend for generations. Whenever I meet anybody, wherever in the world, when they ask where I‘m from, they instantly recognise Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood and the stories we grew up with. So, let me take this opportunity to set the record straight. The Major Oak is not for sale. That part of our ancient woodland is not owned by the Forestry Commission and therefore cannot be sold. The County Council is still working hard to promote Robin Hood and Sherwood, recognising them to be among the Crown Jewels of England‘s forestry. The legislation which has caused so much alarm is contained within the Public Bodies Bill which has just been introduced into Parliament and seeks to give individuals, businesses, civil society organisations and local authorities a much bigger role in protecting and enhancing the natural environment. On hearing the various concerns of constituents, I challenged Caroline Spelman MP, the Minister responsible for forests, before the Environmental Audit Committee and I have been assured that the Government will not compromise the protection of our most valuable and biodiverse forests. Full measures will remain in place to preserve the public benefits of woods and forests under any new ownership arrangements. Tree felling is controlled through the licensing system managed by the Forestry Commission, public rights of way and access will be unaffected, statutory protection for wildlife will remain in force and there will be grant incentives for new planting that can be applied for. When publishing our proposals we will explore further the options for securing and increasing the wide range of public benefits currently delivered by Government ownership and how they might be achieved at lower cost. The Forestry Commission owns only 18% of the UK‘s forests, chiefly managed woodland. Some of it is producing much of our domestic timber, other areas are almost entirely devoted to public benefit and others are a mix of the two. Any potential buyers of the Forestry Commission‘s share would still be subject to stringent planning regulation so that any development which would jeopardise the future of Sherwood Forest simply would not be granted planning permission. We may also find that other potential buyers may include organisations such as the Woodland Trust who would serve as excellent guardians. Sherwood Pines is owned by the Forestry Commission and is clearly a woodland dedicated to public amenity. Like many of you, I have enjoyed cycling and walking around the area but have still to pluck up the courage to ―Go Ape‖! This is a good example of the kind of positive development that is possible and making our forests both financially viable and open to public use is to be encouraged. I hope that this has gone some way to explaining the steps the Government has taken and that those of you who feared for the future of Sherwood Forest have had your fears allayed. I will always be a staunch protector and advocate for Sherwood Forest and will do everything I can to promote and preserve it for future generations.
