Mark Spencer MP Update

I would like to update you on a few local issues. I will soon be meeting with Severn Trent to discuss the flooding issues in Rainworth. Many of you will be aware of the issues surrounding the sewage system and the disposal of floodwater. I will continue to lobby them until we reach a long term solution. I have also met with the Chairman of Rainworth Village Hall to discuss their funding and management. The Parish Council have been very supportive and anything you can do to support this community resource would be appreciated. For example, if you are considering organising a function please bear it in mind. I have had several letters from constituents concerned to hear that the Government is considering selling off the Forestry Commission and particularly the potential sale of Sherwood Forest. I completely understand why, like me, so many of you feel so protective of our iconic woods which have been placed in legend for generations. Whenever I meet anybody, wherever in the world, when they ask where I‘m from, they instantly recognise Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood and the stories we grew up with. So, let me take this opportunity to set the record straight. The Major Oak is not for sale. That part of our ancient woodland is not owned by the Forestry Commission and therefore cannot be sold. The County Council is still working hard to promote Robin Hood and Sherwood, recognising them to be among the Crown Jewels of ‘s forestry. The legislation which has caused so much alarm is contained within the Public Bodies Bill which has just been introduced into Parliament and seeks to give individuals, businesses, civil society organisations and local authorities a much bigger role in protecting and enhancing the natural environment. On hearing the various concerns of constituents, I challenged Caroline Spelman MP, the Minister responsible for forests, before the Environmental Audit Committee and I have been assured that the Government will not compromise the protection of our most valuable and biodiverse forests. Full measures will remain in place to preserve the public benefits of woods and forests under any new ownership arrangements. Tree felling is controlled through the licensing system managed by the Forestry Commission, public rights of way and access will be unaffected, statutory protection for wildlife will remain in force and there will be grant incentives for new planting that can be applied for. When publishing our proposals we will explore further the options for securing and increasing the wide range of public benefits currently delivered by Government ownership and how they might be achieved at lower cost. The Forestry Commission owns only 18% of the UK‘s forests, chiefly managed woodland. Some of it is producing much of our domestic timber, other areas are almost entirely devoted to public benefit and others are a mix of the two. Any potential buyers of the Forestry Commission‘s share would still be subject to stringent planning regulation so that any development which would jeopardise the future of Sherwood Forest simply would not be granted planning permission. We may also find that other potential buyers may include organisations such as the Woodland Trust who would serve as excellent guardians. Sherwood Pines is owned by the Forestry Commission and is clearly a woodland dedicated to public amenity. Like many of you, I have enjoyed cycling and walking around the area but have still to pluck up the courage to ―Go Ape‖! This is a good example of the kind of positive development that is possible and making our forests both financially viable and open to public use is to be encouraged. I hope that this has gone some way to explaining the steps the Government has taken and that those of you who feared for the future of Sherwood Forest have had your fears allayed. I will always be a staunch protector and advocate for Sherwood Forest and will do everything I can to promote and preserve it for future generations. My surgeries continue to be held on every fourth Friday at Dukeries and every second Saturday at my constituency office. If you would like to arrange an appointment, please call my office at 0115 968 1186. I intend to continue my ‗roaming surgeries‘ and will advertise those in due course.

Edited, Produced and Distributed by MARATHON MEDIA 9 local Police Update C/O PC 505 Annette Johnson Beat Manager for Blidworth & Rainworth

A very Happy New Year to you all. I would like to say a big thank you to you all for all your kind wishes whilst I have been away from work. I would also like to thank my colleagues for assisting in keeping our two villages safe and well during the past three months. Car Key and Distraction Burglaries - A main concern I do wish to highlight is the importance regarding car key and distraction burglaries that have fortunately not hit us directly but are generally on the increase around our County. There have been reports of door to door sales persons going around selling domestic products such as dish cloths etc, which could be linked to distraction type burglaries. Please contact the beat team if you require a "we do not purchase items at the door" sticker. What is a car key burglary? Please see article in the newsletter

Blidworth. I am pleased to update you on the results of two large investigations that were running in the village throughout 2010. Large scale disorder on Appleton Road, Sherwood Avenue - All parties involved have now been dealt with positively and the final four offenders attended Nottingham Crown Court in November 2010 after pleading guilty. This will hopefully send out a message to our community that we will not and should not have to tolerate violence in any capacity. This investigation would not have gone ahead without the dedication and commitment of you, the residents. By standing up for what you believe has made this village a safer place once again. The Section 20 Wounding offence where a female was attacked in April 2010 on Dale Lane. This investigation was finalised just last week in Nottingham Crown Court where the two offenders have been brought to justice. Both offenders had pleaded guilty to the offence. The Judge discussed the many statements and the evidence that was produced. I thank you again for not hesitating in reporting this crime and by providing the evidence; it means that the victim can now move on with her life. Off road motorbikes & mini motors on the field at the rear of the Jolly Friar Public House. A meeting with the owner of the Jolly Friar is being organised to clarify the conditions of usage regarding this field. I will update you as soon as I know what the owner has decided. Purchases of Alcohol and Cigarettes for Young People are Illegal -There are local young people gathering outside the TESCO Express on Dale Lane on Friday & Saturday evenings. They have been reported to be asking customers to purchase alcohol and cigarettes on their behalf. Please continue to report this and we as a team will pay extra attention to the area. £80 Fixed penalty notices will be issued to anyone purchasing alcohol to young persons. The Crescent - Anti Social Behaviour. Letters have been hand delivered by PCSO Walker and Arins after the snowballs had been reported over the Christmas period. There have also been concerns regarding "Knock a door run" activities on Lyndhurst Avenue. If you do experience anyone on your garden or banging on your door, please do not be afraid to contact us on 0300 300 99 99. We have collated the names of local young persons responsible this week and can hopefully put your minds at rest that this will now cease. Cannabis Cultivation n the Industrial Estate in September 2010 – this investigation is still ongoing. Blidworth Youth Club is open on Wednesday evenings between 6pm & 8pm at the Methodist Church. All are welcome.

Rainworth. Cat Incident - Firstly, I welcome any intelligence either directly to myself on 0300 300 9999 or anonymously on the Crime Stoppers number - 0800 555 111 regarding the mutilation of a 2 year old cat on the 21st December 2010. This poor animal was killed by mindless criminals and left behind the service station on Kirklington Road. This has been on the news recently and I hope that you will come forward if you can tell me anything at all about this vile act of cruelty. I will work closely with the RSPCA to bring the offenders to justice for the devastation that has been caused to the family. Race Hate Investigation - The offender was brought to Nottingham Crown Court in November 2010 and a positive result was once again received. I thank all the witnesses for coming forward and helping to keep our Community a safer place to be. Another drugs warrant was executed at North Avenue in December. This investigation is ongoing. Please continue to report any suspicious activity or smells! The Anti Social Behaviour team and PCSO Walker are continuing to support the Sherwood Parade shops, Kings Meadow and nearby residents of both locations regarding the graffiti, littering and inconsiderate parking. Local Burglaries - There have been two burglaries within the past two weeks at The Tipple & Tape off license and the Betting shop on Kirklington Road. There has also been four males enter the Miners Welfare Hall and attempt to steal money from the fruit machine within. Please be vigilant and report anything at all that may appear suspicious to you. Have a pad and pencil near to your windowsill and record number plates and vehicles and descriptions of persons seen. If there is no CCTV available near to you, use the camera on your phones to catch any evidence that may support your suspicions. We will always be willing to receive any information that concerns you. Arrest made for the burglaries in and around Rainworth over October and November 2010. We have had no burglaries reported in Rainworth since this significant arrest.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you soon. Kind regards. Annette

Thank you to Annette for her kind and continued input to the Sherwood magazine and we wish her well with her recuperation. Diane Editor

CONTINUING SUCCESS IN FARNSFIELD

The members of Farnsfield and District Branch of the Royal British Legion are starting their new year with great celebrations having retained the Nottinghamshire County RBL Membership Trophy in recognition of the continuing success in recruiting new members to their vital cause. Branch membership has increased by some 58% over the last three years with membership now standing at 165. Many of the new recruits have not seen service in the Armed Forces but have joined the RBL to support the fantastic work that the Legion does supporting the Armed Forces Community. The presentation ceremony was part of the Nottinghamshire Royal British Legion Annual Conference at Bilsthorpe recently which was attended by representatives of Legion Branches from all over the County. The County President, Air vice Marshal Robin Turner made the presentation to Mr Derek Carr who was the branch delegate at the Conference. Newly elected Branch Chairman Nigel Caldicott attended the ceremony and said “This is a fitting salute to a great team effort by our members who have worked very hard to spread the Legion message in the area. With the increasing demand from the Armed Forces Community the work of the Legion is of very great importance and the more willing volunteers we have the greater the impact the Branch can have. Welfare is at the heart of the Legion which aims to be the No 1 provider of welfare, comradeship, representation and Remembrance for all who have served and their dependants”. In addition to their recruiting efforts Farnsfield Branch members have been working hard to encourage donations during the Poppy Appeal and are aiming to raise £1 for every person living in their area. Poppy Appeal Organiser Bob Burrows is co-ordinating these efforts and has recently reported that donations received so far have exceeded last year’s total with the running total for this year’s appeal now standing at more than £4770. He commented “The generosity of the public is very heart warming indeed. With more and more people coming to the Legion for help we need to be in a position to respond and the support, we continue to receive from local people and businesses is greatly appreciated”. The Branch aims to raise at least £5000 during this year’s appeal. 2011 marks the 90th Anniversary of the formation of the Royal British Legion and to mark this great milestone the branch is planning to hold a number of events the first of which is the Branch Christmas Dinner on January 22nd. The dinner was originally going to be held before Christmas but had to be postponed due to bad weather. With a three course meal wine and entertainment all for £25 members and their families and friends hope to kick off the New Year in great style. Tickets for this event are available from Cynthia and Derek Carr on 01623 792332. Further plans include an event on the 29th April for the young people of the area to coincide with the Royal Wedding and a 90th Anniversary Armed Forces Barbeque in June. Branch meetings are held at Farnsfield Cricket Club, Station Lane at Farnsfield at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of each month and visitors are welcome at these meetings. Entente Cordiale – Farnsfield Twinning Association Having recently returned from my first trip to Andouillé in October, I can see why this Association is now in its 23rd year. What a lovely weekend! The people of Andouillé were very welcoming and hospitable and we were warmly welcomed as the new family and looked after by a family also new to twinning in Andouillé. We had a super day on the Sunday when local car clubs took us out in their various classic cars ranging from a 1928 Citroen open top, through various Renaults, a Jaguar, Peugeots, an original Mini and a huge American car. It was like being in a series of gangster films through the ages! We were chaperoned by a fleet of motorcycles who stopped traffic for us and in true French style everyone hooted and waved as we passed. We had a tour of chateaux in the area and a picnic on a bridge and finally ended up in Mayenne for a look round the surprising museum – very well explained. I think I tried 5 different cars – definitely makes you appreciate heated front and rear windscreens! It was a very ―hands on‖ experience - With many thanks to the members of the various Automobile Clubs who gave up their time and offered us their cars. The evening consisted of galettes and crépes and Breton dancing with a live band (a bit like bagpipes but higher!). Thankfully the dances weren‘t too difficult but it was good to exercise off the crépes. I speak personally of course! We had a day with our families on Monday – ours took us with some other families and visitors to the Cheese Museum in Laval – much better than it sounds – a guided tour by a bilingual guide, very detailed and I thought how passionate our guide was about both the product and the company – a real sense of loyalty. The company incidentally makes President Camembert which you can buy in British Supermarkets amongst many other products we see here. I look forward to the return visit from Andouillé in April 2012 and on that subject if anyone knows of a family in Farnsfield who would be interested in joining the Association to meet a French family there are two families in Andouillé looking for British Families. Please let a Committee member know if you would like further information.

Police Update for Farnsfield, Bilsthorpe and local area

Bilsthorpe area. Anti social Behaviour issues have seen a dramatic reduction especially on Maid Marion Avenue and Crompton playing fields, although the ASB has reduced the local beat team are actively patrolling and providing a high visibility presence in the hot spot areas. Village Hall Roof-Due to active patrols, and an appeal to residents and persons in the vicinity of the village hall being challenged there has been no further damage caused to the roof. Road related incidents on the Forest Link estate have quietened down once advise was given to the drivers of the vehicles who were causing issues. Scrap Collection Vehicles on the increase in the village and rising to a daily basis which was causing concern at the recent SNG meeting back in November. The local beat officer is actively challenging scrap collectors to check that they have the correct waste carriers licence and also taking note of their personal and vehicle details to deter potential offences. A concern regarding drug dealing / consumption within various areas of Bilsthorpe was raised at the November SNG, patrols are being carried out in these named areas but there have been no incidents to date. There have been very little burglary and car crime incidents reported over the Christmas period which is a very positive sign as we go into the New Year. Farnsfield / Lowdham ASB has dramatically reduced in Farnsfield due to high visibility patrols, positive engagement with the local youths and a multi-agency approach to solving low level crime. There have been several reports of anti-social Dog Fouling in the vicinity of Parfitt Drive. The local officer is actively patrolling the area to deter these offences and is liaising with the parish council, NSDC ASB team and the NSDC dog warden to develop a permanent solution. Please be aware of distraction type burglars in all areas. There have been reports of door to door sales persons going around selling domestic products such as dish cloths etc, which could be linked to distraction type burglaries. Please contact the beat team if you require a "we do not purchase items at the door" sticker. There have been several car crime incidents around Lowdham and the Trent villages in the past week. The vehicles have been parked in public car parks before the window being smashed and in turn items being taken from within. We strongly advise that you take care when securing your vehicle by removing all Items of value such as sat navs, mobile phones, loose change and bags. If this cannot be avoided and items have to be left in your vehicles make sure they are locked away and out of sight. Ensure that you lock your vehicle, close all the windows and if possible use your alarm. Car crime prevention leaflets and display leaflets for your vehicle are currently being dispatched to your local convenience stores, libraries and post offices for residents to use. There were 4 burglaries in the Trent Villages area over the Christmas Period and patrols have been actively carried out to deter further offences by the local beat team, Sherwood response officers and the ANPR team. We advise that you review your home security arrangements as we go into the New Year to make it as difficult as possible for would be thieves. When leaving your property unoccupied ensure windows and doors are closed and locked. Timers for your internal lights are also a good deterrent for evenings when your property is unoccupied. External security lights which operate on a sensor will also act as a deterrent. If you have a security alarm ensure it is in working order and set correctly. Ensure when you are at home the safety chain is always on to prevent intruders entering your property. Ensure that items of value such as jewellery, lap top computers, games consoles, money, mobile phones and handbags are secure and out of view. There have been a number of car key burglaries in the Lowdham area in the past week. What is a car key burglary? See page …for details. Rotary Club of Ravenshead We go from strength to strength – well in my eyes we do! In the past few weeks we have visited Longdale Craft Centre, enjoying a carvery meal and talk from Gordon Brown about his work. We have also entertained, and been entertained by, a number of excellent speakers at our regular Wednesday meetings – you don‘t have to be a Rotarian to join in. 500 crocus bulbs have been shared around our local Primary schools representing the campaign to totally eradicate polio. On Remembrance Sunday I laid a wreath at the Blidworth memorial on behalf of our Club. More recently we enjoyed a great quiz evening which raised £800 for our chosen charities and we will shortly be coming round with Santa and the sleigh. Before then myself and Alan Snape, Chairman of our Youth Committee, are attending the DARE graduation at Abbey Gates Primary which we support financially. Alongside all this we continue to supply Aquaboxes to International areas across the world plus re-cycling spectacles and hearing aids to third world countries. If you‘d like to contribute to our work we run a 200 club - £3 monthly and there is no other commitment. You don‘t have to be a Rotarian. Apart from the monthly prize money every donation to Rotary is spent on Local, National and International projects and charities. The administration costs are borne by membership subscriptions.

18 Robin Hood’s Sherwood

Okay he is only a legend, but probably the biggest and most celebrated legend in history! The best thing is he is ours! Living in Sherwood Forest Area we are able to appreciate the beauty and history on our own doorstep. In this series, we will offer information on Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest, whether legendary locations or snippets of information on the legend itself. Most locations are open to the public to enjoy. So dust off your Lincoln Green Outfits and make the most of our special places to visit.

Sherwood Forest (Sherewood) was a Royal forest for about 500 years (1100 to 1600AD). The map to the right shows the area mapped by Henry 1st in the 13th Century, with familiar places added. Mainly created for timber and for the hunting of large animals such as Deer and Boar. These animals were owned by the King and anyone such as Robin Hood would have been sentenced to death for poaching one. Originally there were three hunting forests, Clipstone (Pittance), Bestwood and a small area West of Nottingham . Each was surrounded by a fence (pale) about 8ft high and ditches (these allowed deer to leap in but not out). In the 1200’s it is thought Sherwood Forest covered 100,000 acres—about a 5th of Nottinghamshire. Mainly Birch and Oak, the trees were coppiced and pollarded for making poles and laths for construction of houses and ships. Underwood (twigs) were collected for fuel and acorns harvested for animal food.

We have another great new business in the Sherwood Community; Nottingham Used Car Centre, based on Southwell Road East, Rainworth.

The car sales showroom has all been recently refurbished and stands nicely presented to the potential client. There are a wide range of vehicles available from a nice Renault Clio 1.2 valued at £2495 to a super Jaguar X-Type 2.5 V6 Sport Priced at £3495 All cars have a 3-month warranty and have MOT Certification.

You can also view a wider range of vehicles online on the Nottingham Used Car Centre‘s regularly updated website www.nottinghamusedcarcentre.co.uk

The Owner, Proprietor, Matthew Harvey warmly invites all ‗The Sherwood‘ readers to go and take a look and if the vehicle you want is not on the forecourt he is able to easily access it for you. No sales pressure but a friendly hello! Matthew has a history in the car industry and has worked for a number of different dealerships; therefore lots of experience with different brands. He told The Sherwood…

―I started my selling career on Nottingham Road CD Brammals in 2000 selling Suzuki‘s Citroen and various used cars. Following this I moved on to Newbolds Volkswagen where I must admit I enjoyed the best three years of my motor trade life. Working for Peter Newbold really taught me how to look after customers and people came back time after time. This high standard of customer sales experience was invaluable and is something I will certainly be offering my customers here at Nottingham Used Car Centre.

Going back to my roots; Newbolds were then sold out to Nottingham Volkswagen which prompted my move to John Fox Audi where again I spent three great years. In these three years I was promoted to business manager and I was the AUDI R8 specialist which was very exciting. I was flown over to Germany to put the all exciting R8 to the test on various race courses. After 7 years I realised that I had come of age and was ready to lead a team, this took me back to Nottingham Volkswagen were I was appointed as Sales Manager. I then moved to Mercedes Benz Derby to finish what I now call my Apprenticeship‖.

Matthew says he believes all this has led him to his dream – to run his own car retailer and he aims to use all his previous experience and expertise to offer his clients the best service possible.

―I am looking forward to spending many a year here at Rainworth supplying the local community with quality used cars, with no hassle, no stress and a professional service with a smile!‖

All that leaves me to say is, let‘s support Matthew with his new local business. He seems a very nice guy with a genuine aim to work hard and offer a great service. Good luck. Advertorial

WESTVILLE TRIUMPHS AT INDUSTRY AWARDS National Insulation Awards for Nottinghamshire Company

Locally based company and regular Sherwood Community Newsletter Advertiser; Westville Limited enjoyed unprecedented success at the National Insulation Association awards, scooping a pair of prestigious accolades. Westville beat companies from across the UK to win the Best Customer Service and Best Hard to Treat Project awards after being nominated by its customers. The awards, presented annually, are highly prized and designed to recognise and reward best practice in the industry. Westville Limited, was given the two national awards after judges from the NIA were impressed by customers‘ commendations and the high standard of work which went into insulating local authority solid wall homes in East Leake. The project, a partnership with Rushcliffe Borough Council, used state-of-the-art technology to transform a number of post-war pre-fab houses – improving their appearance as well as their warmth and efficiency. Residents described their delight as overworked central heating was turned off, damp diminished and fuel bills reduced. Sean Stevenson, the Commercial Director of Westville Limited, said the awards were recognition for the hard work and professionalism of staff and their attention to detail. ―We are delighted that our work has been recognised by the insulation industry. These awards demonstrate our reputation and the quality of our service, even in the most difficult of circumstances. At Westville we pride ourselves on our attention to detail and our personal relationship with customers, whether they be companies, local authorities or householders. ―As part of our entry we had to submit supporting comments. We had nearly 200 comments from happy customers and 40 actually took the time to nominate us directly via the website. It was a tremendous response. This is great news for Westville.‖ Speaking at the Conference the Minister for Climate Change, Gregory Barker MP, pointed out that homes and businesses combined currently waste up to £6 billion in unnecessary energy costs each year, and said that insulation was the key to transforming energy efficiency across the country. Westville Limited, is a family company founded in 1988 by Sean‘s father, managing director Jon Stevenson. It employs 35 people and clients include most councils and housing associations, Scottish Power, E.ON, EMGAS, Carillion, Connaught, Bullocks, FHM and Henry Boot Ltd, along with several government grant schemes including CERT.

Congratulations to Westville from The Sherwood Community Newsletter for this fabulous achievement. For more information or interviews contact Sean Stevenson on 01623 744451 or email [email protected]. Further information is available at www.westvilleinsulation.co.uk

New Year New Business? Whether you are starting out in business for the first time or expanding an existing business from a home office, finding your first premises can be very daunting. The estate agent will help you find the perfect location for your business but it is your solicitor who will help you negotiate a suitable lease at the best possible cost. Jeremy Blatherwick, a director in a partner company at Tallents in Newark says, When you‘re starting out and money is tight, it can be all too tempting to keep costs down by negotiating a lease of prem- ises yourself but if you do you could be committing your business to crippling financial liabilities. Whereas you are negotiating for the first time, your solici- tor will have negotiated hundreds of leases and be aware of potential pitfalls that can catch out the unwary.‖ Leasing agreements vary greatly and the paperwork can be very complex. At this point potential tenants need to consider whether they want to commit to long term liabilities in exchange for lower rents or take on a short term lease in a serviced facility, which may offer more flexibility but less security. Jeremy continues, "It will always be more expensive to try and unravel a badly negotiated lease. When you‘re just starting out in business you don‘t want to be hit by unexpected repair obligations or service charges running into thousands of pounds. Or find out that your lease makes you liable for the cost of expensive alterations required by new legislation. ―At Tallents we‘ve been negotiating businesses leases on behalf of clients for many years and we understand that new businesses need to keep costs down when they are starting out. A business lease negotiated by our experienced lawyers could make the difference between your business success and fail- ure.‖

It’s Women’s Business North Nottinghamshire

What is It’s Women’s Business?

A new magazine to support business women with advice, relevant articles, an update of events, grants, workshops and such, alongside quality, competitively priced advertising.

What is it’s purpose? Recognising a niche in the market for the ever increasing number of business women, we wanted to offer an interesting read, lots of information, but also a little spice, maybe even a raised eyebrow through a few controversial issues!

What it is not! This is not a feminist magazine. I believe in equality and rights for women, but recognise the strengths and weaknesses of both sexes. Businesses can advertise and readers can offer input, whether male or female.

Local Church Services Who is St Valentine?

But who is St Valentine and why do we Blidworth -St Mary's have a special day for him? 1st & 3rd Sunday in month Holy Communion He is believed to have been a Christian priest or bishop of Terni in Italy 9.15am and he was martyred (killed) for his faith during the reign of Emperor 2nd & 4th Sunday in month Morning Worship Claudius in 269AD.
