The District Youth Assembly update

In partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council helps manage the Youth Assembly in partnership with Mansfield District Council and aims to give young people a voice on issues that affect them.

December 14th and Feb 8th at the Civic Centre Mansfield saw the Executive group meeting of the Mansfield District Youth Assembly. The group consists of two representatives from each of the surrounding schools and youth clubs.

We are working with the Youth Mayor, Deputy Youth Mayor and Member of Youth Parliament In this joint partnership, we are assisting them to achieve the completion of their Manifestoes.

Their Manifesto consists of:  Prompting the positive image of young people  Provide more after school activities  Increasing the involvement of the Youth assembly and democracy  Cheaper transport for young people  Learning new ways to fun raise  Green issues to improve the use of and presentation of our parks

Currently the young people are interested in a campaign against the cuts to the Education Maintenance Allowance and have been involved in collecting signatures for a petition as part of the West Nott‟s college campaign. We are also involved in the march on February 12th against the cuts.

Our very intense debate was about cuts to E.M.A. If you have any issues and thoughts and would like the Executive group to discuss then maybe have them published please send them via email to Kelly Gibson [email protected] or email Sharron Adey [email protected] or telephone 07756563079

Hi there, Rainworth Folk. Firstly, very well done to those of you who supported the ‗Save our Forests‘ campaign. The government have announced that they will pause the sell offs for a few months. It‘s a start, but our forests are still in danger. If we keep working together, we can save our forests, our history and heritage forever, not just for a few months. http://www.38degrees.org.uk/save-our-forests Life in the Parish goes on and one major concern at the moment is the amount of dog fouling on footpaths and grassed areas. The Parish provide many bins to assist dog owners and it is irresponsible not to clear up after your pet. And it is no excuse if you don‘t see or choose to ignore the signs warning you of the penalties. Equally, there are plenty of bins for rubbish and there is no excuse for the amount of litter all over the village. For a better environment for all of us, just ‗Bag it and Bin it‘. The weather is holding fair at the moment and we are nearly into March so hopefully it will stay that way and we can goodbye to the long winter of colds, flu and bad weather. Some residents are already suffering and many more of you are deeply concerned about County Council cuts and how it will affect you. There is no easy answer, but rest assured your local councillors will continue to do their very best to ensure that our community gets the services we need. Don‘t hesitate to contact me if you have a problem you think I can help with. "Lythe and listin, gentilmen, That be of frebore blode; I shall you tel of a gode yeman, His name was Robyn Hode." -A Gest of Robyn Hode (An early printed Robin Hood ballad)

Love him or hate him? Robin Hood has been our country‘s best loved legend since the time of Richard the Lionheart and possibly earlier. Not much is written about Robin, where he lived, what his real identity was or even if he existed at this time history. Most people want to believe in the hero that robbed the rich to give to the poor, much like the loveable rogue played by Errol Flynn in the early films. But how much about Robin is true or just based on hearsay or ballads of the time, like the short extract from the Gest of Robyn Hode, above, that mentions him by name and others like Little John.

Romantics almost certainly borrowed feats and stories from other factual characters of the time, like Fulk fitzwarin, Eustace the monk and Herewod the Wake. As early as 1228 various names, were recorded, similar to Robin Hood: Robehod, Rabunhod and Hobbehod, by courts of justice who classified such people as outlaws. By the 1600‘s there had been as many as 200 references to Robin Hood‘s in existence. In medieval times not many people could read or write, so most stories were heard from minstrels or passed by word of mouth, making accurate historical references a difficult task. Several Ballads and Tales from the 15th century have mention of Robin: The tales of Robin Hood and the Monk , The Lyttle Geste of Robyn Hode, Robin Hoode his Death, Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne and Robin Hood and the Curtal Friar.

One proposed candidate for Robin was an outlaw from Barnsdale (Wakefield, Yorkshire) called Hood, who may have died around 1247 and was buried at Kirklees. It is disputed because the date on the grave is incorrect when examined against the Roman calendar. Despite the lack of a definitive character, most historians accept that a person/s may have existed at the time of King John and King Richard, who may have been of noble birth (Robin of Loxley or the Earl of Huntingdon), Married Maid Marion (real name Matilda) in Sherwood Forest (Edwinstowe), Lived in Sherwood Forest (and Barnsdale or Charnwood forest), wore Lincoln green (scarlet was too expensive) and had a band of Merry men (about 12 to 140). His enemy was the Sheriff of Nottingham and Guy of Gisborne and he had a dislike of the rich Abbots or anyone who collected taxes. Colourful characters grew alongside his myth, including Little John, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlett (buried at Blidworth cemetery?) Alan a Dale and Much the Millers son.

King John was known to frequent our Sherwood area, the Kings palace at Clipstone, where he hunted from and Newark Castle where he died in October 1216 (reputedly poisoned).

I like to feel that although Robin was a local hero who was an expert with the longbow and sword, who robbed the rich to give to the poor, he never hid in the Major Oak and probably never knew Richard the Lionheart, but hey! He is our legend and we will not let anyone else use his name unless it is tied to Sherwood Forest.

Next issue I will look at local landmarks with ties to Robin Hood—whether genuine or not.

(some facts, dates and other info may be incorrect, blame the internet).

Now is the time of year for Spring Cleaning Here are some Tips to help along the way and make it fun?

Before you begin the spring cleaning process it is best to keep several things in mind. Here are a few spring cleaning tips to help you in your spring cleaning. 1. Be organized- Write all the things that you think need to be done. The best way is to do this room by room, not forgetting the outside of the house (back/front porch, grill, patio furniture etc.) 2. Take your time! Don‘t even try to do this in one day. Give it a week or even two, or if need be, do things bit by bit on the weekends. 3. Avoid distractions - Get the kids together doing something else, or helping out in some way. Turn off the TV and maybe put on some music instead. 4. Give away things that are in good condition if at all possible – we get lots of charity collection bags in our area 6. Open up! Open up windows and doors and let the freshness of spring in. Sunshine is known to have antibacterial properties; the warmth of sunshine and the fresh warm air help to clean away bacteria and fungi that cause diseases. This is especially good for people with chronic respiratory diseases (i.e. Asthma). 7. Clean out the clutter- Dig deep into drawers and closets and clean them out in order to make room for the new. 8. Have a great time! Turn on the music, dance around and have a good time! Cleaning out the old grump and dank darkness of the winter blues! Also great exercise

Important areas to remember while cleaning There are several areas that need cleaning but often are left undone and forgotten. When these things are left undone the house can look much older than it really is and possibly cause some things (like the air conditioner) to breakdown sooner.

1. Appliance maintenance-These are things like the microwave, toaster, iron, and other appliances. Make sure they are all in proper working order and see that the cord is in good condition to assure proper fire safety. Additionally, clean any appliance that isn‘t used often. Defrost the refrigerator; clean the lint from around the dryer, check dryer hoses. 2. Vents (heating and cooling ducts) - this may require professional attention, but it can save a bundle of money in the long run on air conditioning bills. Replace filters, prevent vent blockage, and clean the fireplace for the last time before summer begins and its use is not needed for a while. 3. Outdoor areas - This is mainly the gutters, any outdoor furniture that might have been stored away for the winter, grills, and any landscaping that you might want done for the summer. 4. Exterior doors - This especially means the front door, it probably has been hit with plenty of winter dirt and grime in some way. It makes the house appear cleaner and newer if it is clean and approachable. 5. Windows-exterior and interior - Clean the window sills and areas around the window both on the outside and on the inside. Check for any necessary repairs that might need to be made as well. 6. Wardrobe overhaul - Clear out any unnecessary items from closets and organise them well. This will make room for any new things that you might want a place for in the coming months. Donate any unnecessary items to appropriate places.

Sit down with your favourite drink and/or invite family and friends and enjoy your lovely clean home. Don‘t let them make too much mess though or ensure they clean up prior to leaving?

The consequences of giving personal guarantees When starting up a business, it is quite common for the bank to request personal guarantees from the directors, and / or shareholders, of the business as additional security for the company’s borrowings and loans since the new business does not have a credit record. Because it is quite a common request, many business owners will sign a personal guarantee without a second thought. Alistair Millar, Partner at Tallents in Southwell, explains the consequences to business owners of not seeking legal advice before signing personal guarantees. Says Alistair, “A personal guarantee can have a very serious impact on a guarantor’s personal wealth and future security and should always be considered in conjunction with experienced legal advice. A personal guarantee is usually given for a set amount, plus interest, and is payable on demand to the bank should the company default on a loan agreement. A personal guarantee will allow a fledgling company to borrow money without additional charges on the business or its assets however, it also means that the bank can demand full payment from the guarantor in the event of any default. “Should the guarantor be unable to repay the bank in full, a bankruptcy order can be made against the guarantor and they could be forced to sell their assets to repay the amount owed.” Business owners who sign personal guarantees without legal advice, often do not realise that it is a ‘continuing security’, which means there is no agreed termination or end date to the guarantee. Alistair continues, “The guarantor cannot terminate the guarantee unless they are in a position to repay the whole outstanding loan amount that the guarantee is set against. Additionally, in some cases, banks will not want the guarantee cancelled unless they have equal, or greater security from elsewhere. Without the bank’s written confirmation of the termination of the guarantee, the guarantor may continue to remain liable for the loan amount, even if it is paid off in full.” Do not assume that signing personal guarantees as co-directors will equally spread the burden of the liability. In the event of default it is likely that the bank will pursue the director with the perceived greatest assets. Alistair finishes, “We always advise clients who are considering signing a personal guarantee to take legal advice first. Before they sign they must fully understand their total liabilities under the agreement and be comfortable with the consequences. An experienced solicitor will be able to limit the guarantor’s liability under the personal guarantee, or may be able to suggest alternative security for the loan.” For more information, contact Tallents on 01636 671881 Tallents Solicitors, 3 Middlegate, Newark, www.tallents.co.uk

It‘s Women‘s Business North Nottinghamshire

What is It‘s Women‘s Business?

A new magazine to support and celebrate women in business. The monthly magazine offers advice, relevant articles, update of events, grants, workshops and such, alongside quality, competitively priced advertising.

What is it‘s purpose? Recognising a niche in the market for the ever increasing number of business women, we wanted to offer an interesting read, lots of information, but also a little spice, maybe even a raised eyebrow through a few controversial issues!

What it is not! This is not a feminist magazine. We believe in equality and rights for women, but recognise the strengths and weaknesses of both sexes. Businesses can advertise and readers can offer input, whether male or female.

FITS, TRIPS and BROKEN HIPS

This applies especially to the older person. As we get older as the Duke of Edinburgh said recently “bits keep falling off.” In particular, balance and eye sight deteriorate, joints become stiffer, and there is a tendency to have faints and other blackouts. One of the most serious consequences of falls in the elderly are fractured hips. It is estimated there are approximately 76,000 cases per year with a cost of £1.4 billion, and double that cost if the social care is include following a fracture. As in most conditions prevention is the name of the game. There are medical conditions to treat and conditions within the home environment. It is essential that deficiencies in eyesight are recognised and treated: cataracts, glaucoma and retinal degeneration can cause insidious deterioration in eye sight and therefore regular eye tests are necessary to detect what might be treatable conditions. Balance is often poor in the older person. Poor balance might be due to degeneration in the nervous system, medication is a frequent cause of instability , especially sleeping tablets. Blood pressure treatments my cause a person to fall when they stand up; the blood pressure may fall too much and cause a faint. Diabetics on insulin are prone to blackouts if the blood sugar falls too low, possibly due to missing a meal. A common cause of dizziness is poor balance in the dark, it is called Rombergism. It is essential that an older person puts a light on when getting up in the middle of the night and in general their houses should be well lit. The older person is prone to black outs and faints due to unstable circulation.

Osteoporosis, softening of the bones, is frequent in the older person and a fall is more likely to lead to a fracture. Osteoporosis also often leads to poor healing of fractures and makes surgery more difficult. Unfortunately osteoporosis is often only diagnosed after a fracture. There is much to be said for a screening programme especially in post menopausal women. On the other hand the best prevention is regular exercise, especially walking; this toughens bones better than anything else.

The environmental causes include worn carpets and slip mats, especially on polished surfaces. Dogs and cats may be good companions. Walking a dog can be a great incentive to take exercise but may be a nuisance as causes of trips. An older person must not climb on chairs to reach into high cupboard. Kitchens must be designed with this in mind. The dangers of going out in icy conditions are obvious. A frail elderly person needs adequate supervision but not to be deprived of independence and self respect and not treated as 18 month old babies. An alarm system may be necessary to give confidence to the elderly person and their carer. The real tragedy is when and elderly person has fallen and not found for several days and may be has died of hypothermia and pneumonia. Observation by good neighbours can prevent some of these tragedies.

Local Church Services The Power of speech

I‘m sure many of you have been to the cinema to see ―The King‘s Speech‖ with Colin Firth staring as ‗Bertie‘ (King George the V1). This Blidworth -St Mary's film shows the importance of being able to communicate, and the 1st & 3rd Sunday in month Holy Communion powerful effects that words can have on us. There is an old saying that 9.15am ‗sticks and stones can break my bones, but calling never hurts me‘. We 2nd & 4th Sunday in month Morning Worship all know that this is not true, negative and harsh words can have a very damaging effect upon us that can last a lifetime if not dealt with, leading to 9.15am low self-esteem and insecurity etc. But positive words can have the 2nd Sunday in month Holy Communion 8.00am opposite effect – leading to the raising of self-esteem, confidence and Midweek - Wednesday Holy Communion 9.30am security in who we are. The power of speech to raise or lower moral is St Andrew's Mission well recognised. It has been argued that it only takes one negative comment to wipe out the value of ten positive ones! Monthly The ―King‘s Speech‖ illustrates that it‘s not only the content of the words Last Saturday in month 10.00am Coffee Morning that‘s important, but also the ‗manner‘ and ‗tone‘ in which it is delivered. St Andrew's Mission ‗Body language‘ accounts for 55% of what others receive from our 1st Sunday in month 12.30pm Holy Communion St conversation, ‗tone‘ accounts for 38% and the actual words we use account for only 7% !! Andrew's Mission John‘s Gospel begins by saying ―The Word became flesh and dwelt Rainworth -St Simon & St Jude among us‖ (John 1:14) The ‗Word‘ clearly refers to Jesus Christ. The 1st Sunday in month All Age Worship 10.30am Gospel accounts go on to tell us of God‘s love for us, not only in the 3rd Sunday in month Morning Worship 10.30am words Jesus used, but also in the manner in which he delivered them. The Gospels record many instances of crowds flocking to hear Jesus, and 2nd & 4th Sunday in month Holy Communion the people try to get near enough for him to touch them. 10.30am The key point is this – God didn‘t just send us a message to say he loves Midweek -Holy Communion Thursday 9.30am us – he sent his Son to show us how much he loves us. But knowing Monthly about something, and actually experiencing it, is very different. We invite you to come along to one of the local churches, especially as Easter 1st Monday in month Holy Communion 8.00pm approaches, as we once again celebrate God‘s gift of love in Jesus Christ our Saviour.
