It was suggested that there may be some things just to cover the most recent update to the basics, the roles of the Planner and Controller in regards to Event Safety, and possibly on the potential new map symbols being considered by the IOF. Coaching - The Annual Coaching Conference takes place in Crewe on 14th/15th January and the booking form is now available on the BO website. Clubs are asked to encourage their coaches to attend. Junior Squad – The Junior Squad had had a lot of activity including attending JIRCS in Scotland and a training weekend in Malham. Future Events: (i) 27 November 2016 – East Midlands Champs 2016 – LEI – Wakerley (ii) 12 March 2017 – CompassSport Cup Round – LOG – Burwell and Haugham (iii) 18 March 2018 – Midland Champs 2018 – LEI Belvoir Future Possible Events (i) Junior Inter-Regional Champs 2018

(vi) British / British Relays 2021 – Talking to other regions about possible use of their areas. (vii) Midland Champs 2022 - NOC British Orienteering EGM - The EGM passed option 1 which means membership fees for 2017 are £10 senior, £3.30 for Junior and £1.50 event levy. Club / Association Conference – A number of representatives attended the conference which covered a variety of interesting topics, and a couple of papers were shared by the committee. Amendments to the EMOA Constitution and Standing Orders - British Orienteering have identified words that need to be included in club and association constitutions in order to comply with child safety. It is planned to include these at the next EMOA AGM. At the recent EMOA AGM it was agreed that both Mark and Chris would stay on for one more year, over their 3 years maximum as stated in the standing orders. A change to the EMOA standing orders was therefore agreed with the words to be included under Election of Principal Officers that an officer can serve “for not more than 3 consecutive years, unless mutually agreed by the Principal Officers, when no other person has been nominated”. Air Dibbers - Amanda Roberts stated that LOG had borrowed the DVO air dibbers for their recent event. They wondered if it would be worth having a set of regional SI dibbers. The committee felt that it is not practical and would prove very costly at this stage. Dates and venues for future meetings - All meetings to be held at the Pace Room, St Mary’s Church, Clifton Village, at 7.30 p.m. The next committee meeting is scheduled for Monday January 30th 2017. The following meeting is scheduled for Monday April 3rd 2017. ----ooo---- Planners & Controllers Conference The date for the Planners & Controllers Conference is set for Saturday March 4th. If anyone has any topics they wish to see covered at the session please let Chris Phillips know. ----ooo---- East Midlands Urban League 2016 The EM Urban League for 2016 has been defined and 4 events have taken place. ----ooo---- British Orienteering Events and Competitions Committee The following are some key points from the November E&CC Meeting. (a) IOF have approved JK 2017 Days 1, 2, and 3 as World Ranking Events. (b) Event Safety & Welfare training is mandatory for all Event Officials at all Levels and Grades as of 1stJanuary 2017. (c) It is recommended that all Level A Major Event Officials should have a named deputy. It is also recommended that all Team Leaders should also consider having a nominated deputy. (d) UK Orienteering League: It was agreed that a volunteer is required to act as Coordinator / Administrator of 2017 UKOL and beyond, reporting to E&CC, and with the Board having overall management responsibility. (e) Is the Event Calendar too crowded?: Discussion took place on this topic and centred on the need for Level A Major Events to be seen to match requirements as listed in the Competition Rules with particular emphasis on the quality of terrain, mapping, organisation, planning and controlling, together with the need for a decision on whether or not there could be flexibility for all Area Championships to be registered as Level B except where the overarching ‘quality criteria’ can justify Level A registration and status. A method of post-assessment of Events is also required in order to ensure that all aspects of Competition Rules are being met. (f) Inter-Regional Co-operation: E&CC were in agreement that the ‘borrowing’ of one or more quality competition areas for Major Events be reviewed in order to positively encourage co- operation between Clubs and Regions.

Page 9 EMEWS (g) British Mixed Sprint Relay Orienteering Championships - Discussion centred on fitting BMSROC into the annual Event Calendar, possibly to be part of a ‘Championship Sprint Weekend’ alongside the British Sprint Championships, with the British Middle Distance Championships being scheduled at a different time in the annual Event Calendar as a stand-alone Event. An offer to host BMSROC in the autumn of 2017 had been received from DEE and a host for 2018 was also under consideration, with further BMSROC Events in 2019 and 2020 a possibility. (h) Event Official Training Materials - Following discussion it was agreed that:  Allocation of funding is required in order that all training resources and materials be brought up to date and that the appropriate method or methods of delivery be decided upon, following the implementation of the current ‘Strategic Plan’ review of the structure of orienteering within the UK;  That a volunteer with training background and experience be sought from within the British Orienteering membership to lead the review of future training modules and their core syllabus content;  That, in the interim, Ernie Williams is to contact experienced members of British Orienteering within the UK who have in the recent past updated existing materials for courses for Organisers, Planners, and Controllers at all Levels and Grades within their own and other Regions, and to request that these materials be made available for use by Course and Workshop Leaders. (i) Ecard Contact and Contactless Control Punching: The meeting discussed this topic and agreed the following:  It is recognised that the use of contactless cards provides a significant advantage compared to contact cards so the mixing of the two types in competition could be viewed as fundamentally "unfair".  The concept of ‘fairness of competition for all’ is paramount above any other considerations regarding the make or type of Ecard in use at an Event;  If an Event is to have a mix of contact and contactless Ecards in use as designated by the Organiser then provision must be made for competitors who are not contactless Ecard owners or users to hire a contactless Ecard either free or for a modest fee for use on the day or days of the Event;  It is hoped that Clubs belonging to British Orienteering will be able to have available for loan contactless Ecards either free of charge or for a modest fee at all Levels of Event in order to allow individual participants to experience the use of a contactless Ecard;  Planners must place controls at each site on a course of whatever Technical Difficulty as far as is practicable at any Level of Event in such a position that the control is equally fair for competitors with either a contact or contactless Ecard. ----ooo----

Page 15 EMEWS Fixtures This fixture list is intended to list all major events in the UK, and all East Midlands events. It includes all the information available to me about the event at the time of going to press. Details on entry are normally available on the club sites. Unless otherwise stated, Local events offer entry on the day (EOD) to a range of colour coded courses with start times from 10:30 to 12:30. Some will provide a wider range of courses than others. Regional events provide colour coded within which age classes can be run. National events provide a range of age related courses and are normally entered in advance. The OS map reference is either the car park or point from which the event will be signposted. The list is based on BOF registration, but events are sometimes cancelled. If you are uncertain of whether an event will be on, check with the organiser. The editor takes no responsibility for wasted journeys.
