Additional knowledge of the establishments which were present in San Francisco for a longer period of time provides insight into which establishments were successful and how they were connected to the Danish American community, Danish immigrants, and the city at large. The following is a list of establishments which appeared with ads in four or more issues of Bien in the sample or which listed an early date of establishment:

 Alameda Café (various locations) was a Danish coff ee house established in 1880.1 It turns up in ads from 1900 to 1925. The Alameda Café was owned by Jacob Petersen and was, according to a Swedish newspaper writing in 1910, known by everyone in town as well as everyone visiting. The building housed one of the largest cafés in town seating 300 guests and off ered separate seating rooms for ladies and families. The café was open day and night without stop, and the Swedish writer recommended the for its butt er, eggs, milk, coff ee, delicatessen, fruit, and cake. Jacob Petersen, who emigrated from the Southern Jutland area of Denmark and arrived in San Francisco in 1877, had been the president of the Dania Lodge of the Danish Brotherhood and a member of several other Danish organizations.2 There are no ads for Alameda aft er 1925.  Tivoli Café (Eddy Street), established in 18793 and owned by Carl G. Larsen, took out ads in Bien from 1900 to 1925. Carl G. Larsen, born in 1844 in Odense, Denmark, became a prominent land owner in San Francisco and donated land for a park as well as running a café, a hotel, and a chicken farm. The Tivoli Café has been described as a happening place: “The Tivoli was one of those spots which caught all the crowds late at night when all the

37 shows were over and the theaters cleared out. The café was jammed with characters such as Jim Jeff ries, Jack Sharkey, Jack Dempsey, “Strangler” Ed Lewis, Eddie Graney, Jim Corbett , Batt ling Nelson, Abe Att ell. Al Jolson and many other sporting and musical/theatrical show folks and those infamous Barbary Coast folks.”4 Carl G. Larsen died in 1928 and was said to be a generous man: “Newspapers reported that although the café had been losing money for years before Larsen’s death, he worried about his employees and would not close the cafe or terminate any workers.”5 Pictures of the Tivoli Café are available online.6 The Tivoli Café was one of the favorite places to eat for one of the female case study persons in Sewell’s book about public space and gender in San Francisco. The lady in question belonged to the well-educated middle class/lower middle class.7  Tved butcher stores (various locations, owned by Danes Niels Tved and/or Tom Tved;8 1920, 1925, 1930, 1935, 1940) make Danish specialties and will ship Danish “rullepølse” (rolled meat sausage cold cut) to other locations in California.9  The Magnolia (various locations; various owners; 1910, 1915, 1920). Although it does not appear on more than three occasions in the sample ads, the Magnolia had supposedly been present since 1884. It was owned by a Dane in 1905.10  Chris. Petersen (corner of York and 24th Streets; 1900, 1905, 1910, 1915) advertised itself as the “Largest Danish Grocer in San Francisco.” Christian Petersen (1865-1937) came from Aabenraa in Southern Jutland/Northern Germany.11  Fred. Faber grocery store (3893 24th Street; 1900, 1905, 1910, 1915). Johan Frederik Faber was a Dane and passed away in 1928.12  Café Du Nord (2180 Market St., in the basement of

38 the Swedish-American Hall; 1910, 1915, 1920, 1945, 1950). Café Du Nord served a herring every Sunday.13 The café was established in 1908 and exists to this day.14  O.B. Olsen’s (98 Embarcadero St. (and 202 3rd Street); 1925, 1930, 1935, 1940, 1945) off ered Scandinavian from 6:00 am to 1:00 am.15 There are two ads (1915 and 1920) for another restaurant, The Pacifi c Restaurant on 56th East Street, in which O.B. Olsen’s name appears as well.  Grocer Andrew Jacobsen (2500 Folsom St.; 1900, 1905, 1910, 1915).  Okerblad grocery store and liquor/wine store (various locations; various owners; 1900, 1905, 1910, 1915, 1920).  Transfer Quick Lunch (1688 Bryant St.; various owners; 1915, 1920, 1925, 1930).16  Andersen & Meyer (various addresses; 1910, 1925, 1930, 1935, 1940). Bar, deli, importers, grocery store, and liquor store.
