Once known for his cheer and charm, Rally is now famous his “bad boy” attitude and hard-partying lifestyle. But what happened to the guy who used to bring his own bowl to Honors College ice cream socials? DFA Compilation #1 Various Artists The CD release of DFA Records Compilation #1 came out in days of yore, when the iTunes store did not exist, when iPods were more coveted than your phone. The only way to hear the first batch of singles DFA released was to seek out the vinyl and lots of people did. This magical mythical first group of releases from DFA included “House of Jealous Lovers” by The Rapture, “Losing My Edge” & “Give It Up” by LCD Soundsystem. It also included two very different approaches to dance music from The Juan Maclean – “By The Time I Get To Venus” and “You Can’t Have It Both Ways”, which subtly introduced the world to the vocal powers of Nancy Whang. Black Dice also released a 12” single, throwing their noise roots behind a 4/4 screech and created one of the most unique singles in the DFA catalog with “Cone Toaster”. The compilation was edited to fit onto one CD, more a sampler than a completist’s anthology. The gentle jazz-lite opener ‘All About Me’ has sweet pop harmonies and a gentle East Coast ‘60s swagger. ‘The Note’, ‘Til We Die’ and the attractively-flawed ‘Fool’s Gold’ all evoke McCartney at his prettiest, with ‘Father And Son’ owing a debt of gratitude towards the great man’s ‘Put It There’. ‘I’ve Got a Feeling’ (not the Beatles song) is, ironically, more reminiscent of James Taylor, moving up a gear to explore a country- rock vein, and the instrumental title-track has an appealingly hypnotic Spanish flavour. King’s raw voice on ‘Chasing Stars’, ‘No Remorse (I Feel Every Word)’ and the waltzing ballad ‘Upstream’ make you wish he’d showcase his vocals more often. With My Sweet Elixir he has veered clear of indie-rock to create an album that takes few musical risks and plays well within the guidelines. At times it makes for delightful undiluted pop, while at others it’s drizzled with too much saccharine. Students and staf formed R-HAT to connect those in need with volunteer demolition teams that deconstruct damaged houses, Kolditz said. “Ironically, we had to cancel Outreach Day this past weekend and now we’re doing Out - reach Day every day,” Caroline Quenemoen, director of the Center for Civil Leadership, said. R-HAT is a collaboration between the Doerr Institute, CCL, Student Association and Gradu - ate Student Association, according to Kolditz. R-HAT’s eforts have ranged from smaller teams of students carpooling to worksites to 200 students riding buses to Crosspoint Church before heading out into local communities. The majority of R-HAT’s work has been concentrated in Bellaire, Meyerland and the Third Ward as those are the closest to Rice’s campus, Kolditz said. The Doerr Institute is footing the bill for relief eforts which currently amount to a few thousand dollars. Jones College senior Grace Jenkins coordinated with a local Black Lives Matter chapter to expand the reach of Rice’s volunteers. “Although I love the way we at Rice have been taking care of each other and our community, in volunteering with BLMHTX we can also work to support those who need it most,” Jenkins said. Youssef Machkas, who volunteered as part of a demolition team with BLMHTX, said he was struck by the optimism of the people whose homes were fooded . -
