It was an album as raw and honest in emotion as it was clever and slick in execution, and the results appealed to fans from all over the musical map. In honor of its tenth anniversary, we look back at 10 lesser-known facts about this seminal album. The album was recorded at a farm, with tin foil on the walls. That farm was the renowned Long View Farm in Massachusetts. Once a dairy estate, its earlyth-century house and barn were converted into two studios in by former philosophy professor Gil Markle, and its distinguished, maverick alumni include Stevie Wonder, Bad Brains and John Belushi. Murphy told Clash that he draped the whole studio in silver to set the tone for the album. The album is dedicated to a Bulgarian-born psychiatrist. Murphy has said he felt suicidal during the making of Sound of Silver. Making a running album for Nike served as a creative breakthrough for Murphy. Before It starts off so gentle, and becomes so fucking overwhelming. And I wanted to see if I could make a song without LCD Soundsystems Sound of Silver playing together. Just do it all myself by doing it in layers. Because you just made something that for your lifetime has to be first place. Sound of Silver was a one-man show — just the way Murphy liked it. What this meant in practice, however, is that the rest of the band would generally sketch out their parts, and then Murphy would re-record his own takes. They get too democratic; they get watered down. So I can take your instrument and play what I want better than you can. Murphy was gigantically uncomfortable recording his own vocals. LCD Soundsystems Sound of Silver kick everybody out, pretty much. The plaudits for the album rolled in; in addition to a four-star rave in Rolling Stoneit earned a 9. Metacritic dubbed it the 10th-best-reviewed album LCD Soundsystems Sound of Silverand Sound of Silver was LCD Soundsystems Sound of Silver named album of the year by UncutThe Guardian and others. LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver (, Gatefold, Vinyl) | Discogs James Murphy offers his second multi-track album as LCD Soundsystem, and it's as close to a perfect hybrid of dance and rock music's values as you're likely to ever hear. James Murphy started releasing dance music some time between "B. It was a golden age for modern pop, a period during which a lot of personal aesthetics crumbled. Indie wasn't a dirty word, but it was a meaningless one. Pop, though, wasn't just more meaningless, it was more everything. And for the first time in LCD Soundsystems Sound of Silver long while, pop also had its evangelicals; people who could argue convincingly in its favor, and who knew how to contextualize it interestingly. LCD Soundsystems Sound of Silver turnover period was an exciting time; the ideological tension, the feeling that something was at stake, the exuberance of redrawing your bounds. The habitual mixtape maker in your life probably remembers it well. Despite eventually remixing Britney Spears and N. Nonetheless, his transition out of punk and into dance music ran concurrent with this modest revolution, and it's pretty much impossible to separate his epiphanies from ours. Baby One More Time" only reinforces the link. So it's fitting that the finest work of Murphy's career is an album that sits squarely at the intersection of all those careening ideologies. Sound of Silverhis second as LCD Soundsystem, is as close to a perfect hybrid of dance and rock music's values as you're likely to ever hear. These days, there isn't as much to talk about. It feels like less is up for grabs, as if music fans are gripped by a general fatigue. Sometimes, I don't know how you guys do it. We're besieged and stupefied enough by downloads and mixes and remixes and mashups and collections of songs masquerading as albums that an album that feels like an album strikes me as positively ideal right now. Thankfully, Murphy-- a self-confessed s rock nerd who grew up in the heyday of art-rock and albums as Statements-- unapologetically sets out to make dance records that breathe like proper albums. In that respect, Sound of Silver isn't far removed from LCD Soundsystem's eponymous debut, which ultimately tried to do the same thing but fell slightly short. While Sound of Silver makes no bones about Murphy's well-known appreciation of Brian Eno's pop vocal affectations "Get Innocuous", "Sound of Silver"the Velvet Underground "New York I Love You"or new-wave "Watch the Tapes"it never feels like a paste job, but rather just the well- considered work of someone connecting the dots between the past and the present. There's not a LCD Soundsystems Sound of Silver weak track here, and many more already feel classic. And then there's the song that precedes it, and with which it combines to form the record's center. A sleek, delicate, and effortlessly melodic sliver of electro, "Someone Great" is my favorite song of the year so far, and constitutes new ground for Murphy both in terms of prettiness and poignancy. It's about loss, but the lyric remains tantalizingly ambiguous. Murphy LCD Soundsystems Sound of Silver to court spontaneity by refusing to pre- write any of his lyrics before going into the vocal booth, claiming in interviews that they were all ad-libbed. It's a strategy he's evidently abandoned on Sound of Silverand the record is much better for it. When LCD Soundsystems Sound of Silver all said and done, Murphy's real legacy to dance music will be his production sense. He's LCD Soundsystems Sound of Silver analog obsessive with a general aversion to software, and Sound of Silver reflects that. Far removed from the compressed, trebly, and overmastered paradigm that's gripped electronic music in the last decade, Sound of Silver sounds deep, spacious, and full-blooded. Like, um, an old rock record. It's an absolute joy to listen to, for every possible reason, not the least of which is because, these days, those epiphanies feel like they're coming fewer and farther between. • The DIY Careers of Techno and Drum 'N' Bass Djs in Vienna
Cross-Dressing to Backbeats: The Status of the Electroclash Producer and the Politics of Electronic Music Feature Article David Madden Concordia University (Canada) Abstract Addressing the international emergence of electroclash at the turn of the millenium, this article investigates the distinct character of the genre and its related production practices, both in and out of the studio. Electroclash combines the extended pulsing sections of techno, house and other dance musics with the trashier energy of rock and new wave. The genre signals an attempt to reinvigorate dance music with a sense of sexuality, personality and irony. Electroclash also emphasizes, rather than hides, the European, trashy elements of electronic dance music. The coming together of rock and electro is examined vis-à-vis the ongoing changing sociality of music production/ distribution and the changing role of the producer. Numerous women, whether as solo producers, or in the context of collaborative groups, significantly contributed to shaping the aesthetics and production practices of electroclash, an anomaly in the history of popular music and electronic music, where the role of the producer has typically been associated with men. These changes are discussed in relation to the way electroclash producers Peaches, Le Tigre, Chicks on Speed, and Miss Kittin and the Hacker often used a hybrid approach to production that involves the integration of new(er) technologies, such as laptops containing various audio production softwares with older, inexpensive keyboards, microphones, samplers and drum machines to achieve the ironic backbeat laden hybrid electro-rock sound. Developing an Educational Module on the Impacts of Climate Change on Puerto Rico and its Inhabitants An Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) to be submitted to the Faculty of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science SUBMITTED BY: PRINCESA CLOUTIER MICHAEL GAGLIANO EMMA RAYMOND SUBMITTED TO: PROJECT ADVISORS: PROF. LAUREN MATHEWS, WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE PROF. TINA-MARIE RANALLI, WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE PROJECT LIAISON: PEDRO RÍOS, UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE Abstract Small islands like the island of Puerto Rico are susceptible to the negative effects of anthropogenic climate change. Because of this, it is important that climate change education is developed and implemented on the island so that the population, especially its youth, can adequately adapt to climate change. The goal of this project was to develop effective lessons that could be used to teach middle school students in Río Grande, Puerto Rico about the immediate and long-term effects of climate change. These lessons were designed to be relevant to the students by providing evidence and examples of climate change in the island of Puerto Rico. Through the use of interviews with experts on climate change, members of environmental education initiatives, and teachers, we were able to determine what material to incorporate into our lessons and how to best deliver it. To analyze the effectiveness of our lessons we tested our lesson on a ninth grade class and utilized a pre-test and a post-test as a method of evaluation. These tests asked questions based on the learning objectives covered in the lessons, and were then compared using statistical analysis.

Once known for his cheer and charm, Rally is now famous his “bad boy” attitude and hard-partying lifestyle. But what happened to the guy who used to bring his own bowl to Honors College ice cream socials? A source close to Rally’s family reveals that the allegations of a "ing with the Champlain College Beaver were indeed true. Known for her erratic be- havior and promiscuous nature, it was no surprise to Rally’s close friends and family when he started experimenting with drugs and alcohol. “We knew something was re- ally wrong when Rally missed a hockey game to go on another Beaver Bender,” reveals a source. “#at was the breaking point for Rally. The "electroclash" movement was basically a revival of the dance-punk style of the new wave. It was New York dj Lawrence "Larry Tee" who coined the term, and the first Electroclash Festival was held in that city in 2001. However, the movement had its origins on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. One could argue that electroclash was born with Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass (1997), released by Belgian dj Ferenc van der Sluijs under the moniker I-f. At about the same time German house dj Helmut-Josef "DJ Hell" Geier was promoting a scene in Berlin that was basically electroclash. Another forerunner was French dj Caroline "Miss Kittin" Herve', who had recorded the EP Champagne (1998), a collaboration with Michael "The Hacker" Amato that included the pioneering hit 1982. The duo joined the fad that they had pioneered with First Album (2001). Britain was first exposed to electroclash when Liverpool's Ladytron released He Took Her To A Movie (1999), that was basically a cover of Kraftwerk's The Model. Next came Liverpool's Robots In Disguise with the EP Mix Up Words and Sounds (2000).
