Sonification As a Means to Generative Music Ian Baxter
Sonification as a means to generative music By: Ian Baxter A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts & Humanities Department of Music January 2020 Abstract This thesis examines the use of sonification (the transformation of non-musical data into sound) as a means of creating generative music (algorithmic music which is evolving in real time and is of potentially infinite length). It consists of a portfolio of ten works where the possibilities of sonification as a strategy for creating generative works is examined. As well as exploring the viability of sonification as a compositional strategy toward infinite work, each work in the portfolio aims to explore the notion of how artistic coherency between data and resulting sound is achieved – rejecting the notion that sonification for artistic means leads to the arbitrary linking of data and sound. In the accompanying written commentary the definitions of sonification and generative music are considered, as both are somewhat contested terms requiring operationalisation to correctly contextualise my own work. Having arrived at these definitions each work in the portfolio is documented. For each work, the genesis of the work is considered, the technical composition and operation of the piece (a series of tutorial videos showing each work in operation supplements this section) and finally its position in the portfolio as a whole and relation to the research question is evaluated. The body of work is considered as a whole in relation to the notion of artistic coherency. This is separated into two main themes: the relationship between the underlying nature of the data and the compositional scheme and the coherency between the data and the soundworld generated by each piece. -

Antony and the Johnsons Til Northside

PUNK AESTHETICS IN INDEPENDENT "NEW FOLK", 1990-2008 John Encarnacao Student No. 10388041 Master of Arts in Humanities and Social Sciences University of Technology, Sydney 2009 ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisor Tony Mitchell for his suggestions for reading towards this thesis (particularly for pointing me towards Webb) and for his reading of, and feedback on, various drafts and nascent versions presented at conferences. Collin Chua was also very helpful during a period when Tony was on leave; thank you, Collin. Tony Mitchell and Kim Poole read the final draft of the thesis and provided some valuable and timely feedback. Cheers. Ian Collinson, Michelle Phillipov and Diana Springford each recommended readings; Zac Dadic sent some hard to find recordings to me from interstate; Andrew Khedoori offered me a show at 2SER-FM, where I learnt about some of the artists in this study, and where I had the good fortune to interview Dawn McCarthy; and Brendan Smyly and Diana Blom are valued colleagues of mine at University of Western Sydney who have consistently been up for robust discussions of research matters. Many thanks to you all. My friend Stephen Creswell’s amazing record collection has been readily available to me and has proved an invaluable resource. A hearty thanks! And most significant has been the support of my partner Zoë. Thanks and love to you for the many ways you helped to create a space where this research might take place. Daryl Sherman Celebrates Her Father at Chan’s See our video interview with Daryl Sherman Join jazz vocalist/pianist Daryl Sherman at Chan’s in Woonsocket on Saturday, October 25, to celebrate the life of her late father, the jazz trombonist Sammy Sherman. The performance will mark what would have been Sammy’s 100th birthday, and it will be a musical showcase not to be missed. Sammy Sherman was a masterful jazz trombonist and bandleader, at one time playing in New York City. Instead of chasing a distinguished career in music, Sammy decided to stay in Rhode Island, where he raised his children, worked in the restaurant business, and continued to head up his own groups. He played around the area, but ultimately his longest-lasting contribution to the music business was his daughter Daryl! At age 5, Daryl started taking an interest in music, singing along with her father at the piano. Since then, she’s enjoyed a distinguished musical career, including a 14-year residency at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. She’s played with greats like Artie Shaw and Buddy Hackett and toured the world with her music. Sammy passed away at the age of 89 in 2003. His posthumous album released in 2004, called A Jazz Original Live at Chan’s, is the only real record of his work, and was recorded 1994-1998 when Sammy was in his 80s. This memorial show will be far from a solo performance; an all-star crew will help honor Sammy in style. The event will feature performances from local legend (and Woonsocket native) Greg Abate on saxophone, Jon Wheatley on guitar, Boots Malson on guitar, and David Sherman on trombone. -

On “Strict Machine” by Goldfrapp
On “Strict Machine” by Goldfrapp Sam Jowett Four months, fifteen days in. Honeymoon Phase meant to mellow out. Passion ought to neutralize. But how fucking wrong is that. Chrysalis shredding—not just clothes—but those thoughts. True selves emerge. Polyester veneer of politeness is now scraped clean. Goldfrapp The culprit: a single nail, obsidian sharp. Goldfrapp’s satin clad, ebony-gloved fingers. Needle digs into vinyl. You dig into my skin. “Wonderful Electriccccccc.” The lyric “Strict Machine” sashays over the bridge. We saunter past discarded inhibitions. The chorus awaits, an Black Cherry eruption with a single revelation: 04/2003 I’m in love! Mute I’m in love! I’m in love! “Felt Mountain,” their debut, was the bait. But just like us, hints flirted beneath the cabaret instrument gloss. Even masquerades can only hide appearances for so long. A truth awaited. Not to be whispered, but rather gasped aloud. “Strict Machine” dictates: Dressed in white noise. Little else. This is the inverse of a sophomore slump. Former trip-hop ambience is usurped by electroclash riptide. Siren synths draw us closer. Entrapping me to you. Lyrics our parents warned us about. Trent Reznor wishes he could be this lethal. Dance. It does not ask. It demands. Sitting is heresy. Head thrashing, body sweating. This is not some damn waltz. Hands do not clasp in graceful arcs. Rather, bodies meet perpendicular. Entwine inversely. Arms twist. Disorientation until we can’t tell each other apart. You tell me you can tie cherry stems with your tongue. I tell you I can whisper “Black Cherry” nothings into your ear. -
