Election Highlights in and Iowa

Nebraska Secretary of State claims Nebraska shattered records on Nov. 3 when nearly 73% (936,000) of registered Nebraska voters cast their vote, a 6 percent increase from the 2016 election. Voter turnout and unique laws allowing electoral votes to be split are gaining national attention. Nebraska has five electoral votes–Trump gained four and Biden won one pivotal split electoral vote from Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District in Omaha.

In Iowa, 1,697,000 (76%) of registered voters turned in early ballots or showed up to the polls, one of the highest turnout rates in the country. Trump took all six electoral votes in Iowa, winning by 9 points. Republican Senator Joni Ernst is keeping her seat in the U.S. Senate with 51.9% of the vote. This seat, and a few others, were swing seats that could have earned a Democratic majority in the Senate, which would have resulted in a trifecta (House, Senate and White House) for Democrats.

In the Iowa House, Rep. Cindy Axne (D) will continue to serve Iowa’s third congressional district, which includes nearby Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Randy Feenstra will be sworn into the fourth district (northwest corner of the state) after defeating incumbent Rep. Steve King in the June Primary.

In the Nebraska , two sitting senators were upset by their challengers–Senator in Grand Island and Senator Andrew LaGrone in Gretna. Although the Legislature is officially nonpartisan, often votes will trend on party lines. Before the election, the Legislature was comprised of 30 registered Republicans, 18 Democrats and 1 Independent. In January, the Legislature will be made up of 32 Republicans and 17 Democrats.

All proposed amendments and initiatives on the ballot passed on Election Day:

1. Amendment 1 – to eliminate slavery or involuntary servitude as a punishment 2. Amendment 2 – Constitutional amendment to extend TIF (tax-increment financing) from 15 to 20 years if more than half of the property is extremely blighted. 3. Payday Lending Petition: Initiative Measure 428 that imposes a rate cap on lenders 4. Games of Chance – Constitutional Amendment Petition: Initiative Measure 429, which allows all forms of games of chance at race tracks 5. Games of Chance – Racetrack Petition: Initiative Measure 430 that a allows all forms of games of chance at race tracks and establishes a gaming commission 6. Games of Chance – Tax Petition: Initiative 431, which establishes an annual tax on games of chance

In Congress, we are waiting for final results from key states to understand the balance of power in the U.S. Senate. Currently, Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the U.S. Senate. With several races undecided, Democrats have gained one new seat in the Senate, but would need two more for a 50-50 split. Kamala Harris, as vice president, would cast tiebreaking votes in the chamber. The House continues to favor Democrats. Some argue a divided government offers a balance of power and a degree of bipartisanship that is important as lawmakers discuss key issues like healthcare, taxes, etc. Opponents argue a unified government prevents gridlock.

Finally, there are a lot of people brushing up their resumes in Washington as the Biden administration is likely to replace leaders in many influential positions, including U.S. Secretary of HHS and CMS 2

Director, to name a few. These positions are just as influential as the individuals we vote into office, if not more.
