They called their settlement Port Royal and built a fort called Charlesfort (located near present day Parris Island), to honor the French king, King Charles IX.

Once the colony was set up, Ribault returned to France to get more supplies for his men. A colony is a place that is controlled by a far away ruler. When he arrived in France he had problems and wasn’t able to return back to South Carolina with the much needed supplies. The men at Port Royal struggled because they had trouble finding food and fighting with local Native Americans. After a while, they gave up and headed back to France.

He met many Indian tribes along his way including the Yemassee on his journey. He tried to make friends with the Native Americans because the Spanish were beginning to see how important trade was. Pardo traveled the midlands and up through the Up Country. He even traveled through the village of Cofitachiqui, just like De Soto. He was searching for a route to silver mines.

Unfortunately, Native Americans attacked the forts that Pardo built, including Santa Elena. Spain was beaten and no longer tried to set up forts and claim land inland.
