SIBBALDIA: 171 The Journal of Botanic Garden Horticulture, No. 10 LIVING COLLECTION OF FLORA GRAECA SIBTHORPIANA: FROM THE FOLIOS OF THE MONUMENTAL EDITION TO THE BEDS OF A BOTANIC GARDEN IN GREECE Sophia Rhizopoulou1, Alexander Lykos2, Pinelopi Delipetrou3 & Irene Vallianatou4 ABstrAct The results of a survey of vascular plants illustrated in the 19th-century publication Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana (FGS) and grown in Diomedes Botanic Garden (DBG) in Athens metropolitan area in Greece reveal a total number of 274 taxa belonging to 67 families, using the Raunkiaer system of categorising plants by life form (Raunkiaer, 1934). Therophytes dominate with 36 per cent, while hemicryptophytes, chamephytes and geophytes follow with 16 per cent, 14 per cent and 14 per cent respectively. In terms of life cycle, 60 per cent are perennials, 36 per cent annuals and 4 per cent other growth forms adapted to environmental disturbance. Although anthropo- genic pressures and environmental stresses have caused loss of habitat and resulted in profound landscape transformation in the eastern Mediterranean, DBG contributes to the maintenance of approximately one-third of the plants collected in territories of the Levant in 1787. This living collection constitutes an important testimony to the scientific value, heritage and plant diversity described in FGS. Statistics are provided comparing the plants collected and illustrated for FGS and those now growing in DBG. IntroDuctIon Flora Graeca Sibthorpiana (Sibthorp and Smith, 1806–1840) is considered by many to be the most splendid and expensive flora ever produced and was printed in ten folio volumes between 1806 and 1840 (Stearn, 1967; Lack & Mabberley, 1999; Harris, 2007). -

It comprises seven species, two of which are described as new: Trifurcula (Levarchama) peloponnesica VAN NIEUKERKEN sp. n., found in Greece: Peloponnesus and feeding on Anthyllis hermanniae, and Trifurcula (Levar- chama) manygoza VAN NIEUKERKEN,A.LAŠTŮVKA et Z. LAŠTŮVKA sp. n., from Croatia and northern Greece, feeding on Lotus corniculatus. The subgenus occurs throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, and all species make leafmines on Fabaceae: Loteae. All species are diagnosed and biology and distribution are discussed, including new hostplant and distribu- tional records. The phylogeny is discussed on the basis of morphological characters and hostplant relationships are discussed. The Macaronesian T. ridiculosa WALSINGHAM is sister to a clade comprising the remaining species. Lotus is most likely the plesiomorphic hostplant choice, with two host shifts to respectively Anthyllis and Coronilla. THE EVOLUTION OF BIRD POLLINATION IN MACARONESIAN LOTUS SECTION RHYNCHOLOTUS (LEGUMINOSAE) by Isidro Ojeda Alayón A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Botany) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) March, 2011 © Isidro Ojeda Alayón, 2011 ABSTRACT In order to understand the evolutionary transition from bee pollination (melittophily) to bird pollination (ornithophily), I studied a group of Lotus from Macaronesia. First, I provided a combined phylogenetic framework using nuclear and plastid genes, where I showed that the morphological features adapted to opportunistic passerine birds in Tenerife and La Palma are derived and evolved recently within the last 1.2 Ma in four species. I also identified Lotus sessilifolius as the most likely closely related species with melittophily. I showed that L. sessilifolius and the clade where this syndrome evolved had a pre-adaptation to produce a color change to red flowers (and the associated anthocyanidin pigment, cyanidin) as a possible strategy to increase bee foraging efficiency. The transition from yellow to red flowers in this group required only a redirection in the flux of pigment production and a modification in the proportions of flavonols and anthocyanidins, especially within the cyanidin branch. I also found that petal micromorphology is highly modified between the two syndromes. I found that ornithophilous flowers lack the typical papillose conical cells, which are distributed in the exposed sides of the petals in bee-pollinated flowers. This reduction of conical cells is associated with an early down-regulation of a dorsal identity gene in legumes, LjCYC2. -

This Book hopes to sketch the invaluable natural resources of the Regions involved by representing the diversity of bee species there and hopes to be an aid to all of those engaged in nature conservation and sustainable land management in the countries involved. The Eastern Mediterranean in this context is defined as Continental Greece and archipelagoes south and eastward as well as the Mediterranean coasts and islands of Turkey and Mediterranean and Montane ecotones inland.
