Background In 1917, there were 44,800 miles of electric railway trackage in the United States. The combination of growing automobile usage and improved roads led to the demise of electric railway transportation from the 1920s through 1950s. Today, the United States is witnessing a growing renaissance of vintage trolley systems. Vintage trolleys have been successfully integrated into the public transportation systems in several cities. Businessmen in many areas have pursued vintage trolley service as a means to stimulate local business in redeveloped or historic areas.

    3. Inventory of Existing Transit Services in the DRCOG Region Within the DRCOG planning area, there are many entities that provide transit services. These include services funded by local governments and by non-profit and for-profit organizations. Some services are open to the general public. Others are reserved for certain groups of students, employees, clients or members of a particular organization. DRCOG surveyed transit agencies that provide intraregional service within the Denver area in 2007. The results of the survey are presented in this section. Providers were categorized by their primary transit function. RTD, because of its dominance of Denver-area transit service, is examined separately. Other providers are divided into those who offer service to the general public and those who offer primarily specialized transit services. Other providers such as intercity bus services, taxis and client-based services were not surveyed, but their contribution to the overall transit network is discussed. A. Summary of Findings In 2006, about 89 million one-way trips were served by transit. Most transit trips in the region were provided by RTD. As shown in Figure 8, RTD provided approximately 87 million trips (including access-a-Ride) or 97 percent of the total transit trips. The remaining trips were provided by other general public and specialized transit providers. Figure 8 Transit Trips by Provider, 2006 Non-RTD Transit Trips (2,370,813) 3% RTD Transit Trips, (87,005,156) 97% Specialized transit trips for the elderly and disabled accounted for 1.1 percent of all transit trips in 2006 (Figure 9). The size of the Tucson roundhouse reflects the need for servicing the number of locomotives that were in operation in the area. Re-purposed Roundhouses – In 1924, the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) purchased the EP&SW. Subsequently, the Denver & Rio Tucson AZ, Las Vegas NM, Grande bought the SP, which later merged with the Union Pacific Railroad.
