Originalveröffentlichung in: Fumagalli, Elena (Hrsg.): Firenze milleseicentoquaranta : arti, lettere, musica, scienza, Venezia 2010, 311-323 u. Abb. (Studi e ricerche / Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, Max-Planck- Institut ; 6) ECKHARD LEUSCHNER WOMEN AND MASKS: THE ECONOMICS OF PAINTING AND MEANING IN THE MEZZA FIGURA ALLEGORIES BY LIPPI, DANDINI AND MARTINELLI A considerable number of paintings produced in Florence and usually dated to the late 1630s, the 1640s and early 1650s represents half-length figures of young women before a dark background. Among the attributes of these women, masks of similar shapes, probably made of leather and equipped with rather expressionless faces, appear regularly. Art history has not yet analysed these half-length figures as a group with related charac teristics, neither in terms of style and picture size nor in terms of allegori cal meaning. Most scholars, as a matter of fact, have limited themselves to discussing just one example, the socalled Simulazione by Lorenzo Lippi (fig. 1) in the museum of Angers which has acquired a certain prominence after having been chosen to decorate the cover of the Seicento exhibition in Paris in 1988.' In Lippi's painting, a woman with a serious expression on her face confronts the spectator with two objects in her hands, a mask and a pomegranate. Several art historians have interpreted one or both attributes as references to Simulatione in Cesare Ripa's Iconologia thus describing Lippi's woman as a personification of Simulation or of a simi lar allegorical quality, Dissimulation.1 Chiara d'Afflitto went one step fur 1 See Seicento, exhibition catalogue, Paris 1988; the entry for the picture by A.

The Corsini Collection: A Window on Renaissance Florence Exhibition labels © Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, 2017 Reproduction in part or in whole of this document is prohibited without express written permission. The Corsini Family Members of the Corsini family settled in Florence in the middle of the 13th century, attaining leading roles in government, the law, trade and banking. During that time, the Republic of Florence became one of the mercantile and financial centres in the Western world. Along with other leading families, the Corsini name was interwoven with that of the powerful Medici until 1737, when the Medici line came to an end. The Corsini family can also claim illustrious members within the Catholic Church, including their family saint, Andrea Corsini, three cardinals and Pope Clement XII. Filippo Corsini was created Count Palatine in 1371 by the Emperor Charles IV, and in 1348 Tommaso Corsini encouraged the foundation of the Studio Fiorentino, the University of Florence. The family’s history is interwoven with that of the city and its citizens‚ politically, culturally and intellectually. Between 1650 and 1728, the family constructed what is the principal baroque edifice in the city, and their remarkable collection of Renaissance and Baroque art remains on display in Palazzo Corsini today. The Corsini Collection: A Window on Renaissance Florence paints a rare glimpse of family life and loyalties, their devotion to the city, and their place within Florence’s magnificent cultural heritage. Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is delighted that the Corsini family have generously allowed some of their treasures to travel so far from home.

Cover Page The handle http://hdl.handle.net/1887/32883 holds various files of this Leiden University dissertation. Author: Goudriaan, Elisa Johanna Title: The cultural importance of Florentine patricians. Cultural exchange, brokerage networks, and social representation in early modern Florence and Rome (1600-1660) Issue Date: 2015-04-30 Patricians as patrons and collectors 109 3 Patricians as patrons and collectors during the reigns of Ferdinand I, Cosimo II, the regents and Ferdinand II de’ Medici Introduction In this chapter we show the versatile patronage of some important patrician families in the period 1600-1650 (although the first major commission started as early as 1581). Until now, the patronage characteristics of different patrician families in the first half of the seventeenth century have never been compared with each other. Thus this analysis, based on the excellent studies of individual patrician families by other researchers, shows how they took example from each other and from members of other Italian elite groups, underlines their joint cultural aspirations, and reveals the development in represented themes over time due to transformations in social aspirations. For the first time an overall picture is given of patrician patronage and collecting in this period. 3.1 Patricians as patrons and collectors during the reigns of ferdinand I and Cosimo II de’ Medici We start by outlining the characteristics of the commissions of four important patricians during the reigns of Ferdinand I and Cosimo II de’ Medici at the be- 110 Chapter Three ginning of the seventeenth century: Giovanni Niccolini and Piero Guicciardini (the ambassadors whose diplomatic activities we analyzed in the previous chap- ter), Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger, and Niccolò dell’Antella.

Sanatçının 1000’in üzerindeki yapıtı bugün dünyanın çeşitli müze ve özel koleksiyonlarında korunmaktadır. He was apprenticed to a goldsmith but soon he began to turn his attention entirely towards engraving. He spent the majority of his prolific career working in Florence. He also spent a considerable time in study at Rome and went to Paris and the Netherlands. In the beginning of his artistic career he was under the influence of Jacques Callot’s style but later became enchanted by the Rembrandt’s prints.

  • One Hundred Drawings and Watercolours
ONE HUNDRED DRAWINGS AND WATERCOLOURS 1 We are delighted to present the thirteenth edition of our annual Winter catalogue of One Hundred GUY PEPPIATT FINE ART Drawings and Watercolours. Although this small catalogue has been a hallmark of our yearly exhibition calendar for over a decade, this is the first year that we are presenting both the catalogue and exhibition STEPHEN ONGPIN FINE ART digitally. Given the challenges we have all faced in the wake of COVID-19, we shall be disappointed to not see many of you at our gallery during what is usually a very lively time of the year. For this reason, a virtual tour of the exhibition, as it is hung on the walls of our gallery, will be available by the time you read this. We hope you enjoy this catalogue and exhibition, and encourage those of you who are able to visit us in person in London to please do so, by appointment. The exhibition in the gallery continues until the 18th of December. ONE HUNDRED This digital catalogue presents a wide range of British and European drawings and watercolours, placed more or less in chronological order, dating from the first half of the 16th century to the present day. DRAWINGS AND WATERCOLOURS The areas of Old Master drawings, early British drawings and watercolours, and 19th and 20th Century dating from the 16th Century to the 21st Century drawings have long been regarded as disparate fields, but part of the purpose of this annual catalogue is to blur the distinction between these collecting areas.

  • From the Chapel to the Gallery the Aestheticization of Altarpieces in Early Modern Italy
FROM THE CHAPEL TO THE GALLERY THE AESTHETICIZATION OF ALTARPIECES IN EARLY MODERN ITALY by Sandra Richards A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art University of Toronto © Copyright by Sandra Richards 2013 From the Chapel to the Gallery: The Aestheticization of Altarpieces in Early Modern Italy Sandra Richards Doctor of Philosophy, History of Art Department of Art University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines the aesthetic response to altarpieces in early modern Italy, which culminated in the reconstitution of altarpieces as gallery paintings, when, beginning in the seventeenth century, wealthy collectors began removing them from churches and displaying them in their private collections. Such a transformation not only entailed a complete rupture in the function of these paintings – from object of public veneration to private delectation – but also frequently met with resistance and censure from local authorities. It is precisely because it was a very difficult thing to do that the documents concerning the removal of altarpieces are frequently revealing about contemporary attitudes toward art among collectors as well as ecclesiastics. In order to understand the mechanisms – both theoretical and practical –that had to be in place for such a transformation to occur, I explore the history of the altarpiece from the rise of ius patronatus as an economically motivated form of piety in late-medieval Italy, through the encroachment of artistic criteria such as invention and difficulty in the making and viewing of religious art in the sixteenth century, and, finally, to the post-Tridentine discourse on sacred images.
