FIA WTCC NEWSLETTER # 46 – 23 November 2007 RECORD CROWD ATTENDED MACAU EVENT A record crowd attended the 54th Macau Grand Prix event that included the FIA WTCC finale. According to the figures released by the Macau Grand Prix Committee last Monday, 55,000 spectators gathered on the grandstands along the Guia Track over the weekend, while an estimated 200,000 more watched the races from hotel rooms, flats and restaurants’ terraces around the track. PRIAULX: STORY OF A PHENOMENON Andy Priaulx began his route to become one of the most successful touring car drivers ever four years ago when he clinched the 2004 FIA European Touring Car Championship crown in Dubai. 2004: ETCC, DUBAI – He arrived in the Emirate state with a 12-point gap behind fellow BMW driver Dirk Müller and finished second in both races, equalling Müller’s 111 points but beating him by the dead heat (5 wins against 3). 2005: WTCC, MACAU – In the following season, the first of the new World Touring Car Championship, Müller and Priaulx arrived to the last round in Macau separated by only one point, with Alfa Romeo’s Fabrizio Giovanardi third with a 5-point gap. Again two second places enabled Priaulx to overturn the situation. 2006: WTCC, MACAU – No less than nine drivers arrived in Macau still in contention for the 2006 world championship. Alfa Romeo’s Augusto Farfus was leading before the final round, only one point ahead of the Priaulx-Jörg Müller duo. Priaulx set pole position and won the first race, with Müller sixth; as the German won the second race a fifth place was enough for Priaulx to grab his third title by one point.

  • Touring Car Racing - Overview Touring Car Racing Is an Auto Racing Competition of Advanced Racing Cars
COMPILED BY : - GAUTAM SINGH STUDY MATERIAL – SPORTS 0 7830294949 Touring Car Racing - Overview Touring car racing is an auto racing competition of advanced racing cars. This sport is very popular in many countries like Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Germany, Sweden and Norway. However, its speed cannot be compared with Formula One. The touring car series consists of one or more endurance races with time duration of 3-24 hours. Basically, the event starts with a standard body shell but racing equipment like engines, suspension, brakes, wheels, and tires are permitted. Races of touring cars are conducted on road courses and street circuits. There is a very little technical difference between racing cars and touring cars. A casual observer can never point out the difference between the two. Touring cars come from family cars like sedans, hatchbacks and do not support high technical level. Just like any other racing game, all the riders participating in this game focus on covering the road track within the shortest time span and be the first one to win the game. The riders have to be quick and sharp as there can be a margin of less than one-tenth of a second between the first three finishers. History The British Touring Car (BTC) Championship, commonly known as touring car series, was founded in 1958 as British Saloon Car Championship and was renamed in 1987. This car racing series is conducted every year in the UK and is governed by the TCA. Track temp: 26 ° C / Ambient temp: 24 ° C TYRE SPECS FOR THIS RACE Front: B - Medium, Multi-Tread E - Hard Single Tread Rear: D - Medium Hard G - Hard Qualifying had been incredibly close with 14 riders within one second. Toni Elias, still suffering from a testing accident, put his Gresini Racing Moriwaki on pole, just ahead of 2009 125cc champion Julian Simon (RSV), with Stefan Bradl (Suter) and Alex de Angelis (Force GP210) completing the front row. Starting from ninth on the grid of 41 riders, the 19 year old Tomizawa watched as Bradl and De Angelis crashed out together on the first lap, and then worked his way through to the front of the leading pack of Elias, Debon and Cluzel to take the lead on the sixth of 20 laps. By half distance he had a 1.5 second gap which he gradually extended to four and a half at the flag. Debon (FTR) and Cluzel (Suter) filled the other podium places after swopping places throughout the last five laps, whilst Elias held onto fourth despite the injuries he was carrying. “This is a like a dream” said Tomizawa as he celebrated his first ever Grand Prix win “but I could stay here forever because this is very, very nice!” “The first ever Moto2 race bettered all our expectations, said Dunlop’s Jeremy Ferguson.
